just seen a bit about it. doesn't affect me as dd is in a wheelchair and ds is 14. but how ill parents enforce it. If you have say an 8 yr old who regards them as "baby seats".
This is a direct quote from an 8yr old. i was giving him and his mum a lift. already had ds and his mate in the car so assumed that said boy would sit in dd's sn seat which goes up to 11. he refused as it was a "baby seat" and instead sat on his mums lap( didn't offer a lift again due to other reasons as well)
so made me curious I think it is a good idea by the way.
over to you:o

dw, we are a changing dhs car( merc suv) a dn were going ot radically downsize into a golf but.. we cant fit all the kdis seats ina dn them have room to do up the buckles

so we are getting an mpv

ocd · 31/08/2006 20:42

their is scant evidence of safety

ocd · 31/08/2006 20:42

our seatbelts lower onto the kdis hsoulders anyway

TheDullWitch · 31/08/2006 20:46

But there are a million trillion things you can do to make children safer. You could make skateboards and trampolines illegal. Ban children under 10 from crossing roads. The point is they have heavyhandedly made a new LAW which makes non compliance with what is a marginal bit of childsafety a CRIMINAL ACT. But one which will never be enforced. It is legislative lunacy. They should have a campaign of advice, backed up by statistics etc (by the way we are just told we must do these things, but not why) rather than turn parents into criminals.

trafficy stugff

Fine can be £500 and there are few exceptions and the school run is not excempt except if emergency collection and they will check.

As with the old rules all children upto 10y should still use seats and as a nanny it has bee a welcome developement as some of us have tended to supply our own and know that at other times the children are lose.

"they refuse to use xx seat" is the reason but never an issue with the nanny and can imagine the headlines should a charge be injured now the new rules are here.

TDW, theuir your kids, endanger their lives if you wish.

personally my kids will stay in car seats till they outgrow them

ocd · 31/08/2006 20:59

fine can be up to 1000 on motoring

TheDullWitch · 31/08/2006 21:39

Oh Misdee you must be such a better mother than me.

misdee · 31/08/2006 21:41

no luv, i am not, but if you read further down, i am a short adult and damaged my neck badly i na crash. dont want that for my kids.

LucyLemon · 01/09/2006 12:41

As a fellow little Mum I am totally with Misdee on this. And also the other sensible not so little Mums!

TDW - They are your children, it is your choice to flout the law but it is also your job as a parent to make the right decisions for your dc until they are mature enough to decide for themselves.
Don't descend into a petty argument regarding mothering skills - very childish. If your kids will not do as you say then bribe them if you must to sit in those seats. Think we all know it's the right thing to do.

My dd1 goes to school in a big people carrier - it is laid on by the council as she goes to a school with special provision, and the vehicle carries 8 kids (all primary age - therefore all within the new regulations) and the driver. As it is a private hire car, but a regular journey in the car every day, I'm not clear if (1) she will need a booster and (2) who will provide it if she does - and (3) should I be providing one for her safety anyway even if the other kids dont have one (and some of them are a good bit younger/smaller than her).
Might just phone the council but wondered if any of you had any idea?

mrs2shoes · 01/09/2006 17:13

would think you will have to provide then it will go to school with the child and be used again on the way home. this was what happened with dd(except seat satyed on bus)

fattiemumma · 01/09/2006 17:18

i am sure there will be a huge school run crack down for the first few weeks tha the law gets changed and theyw ill pull over anyone who hasn't got a seat or whatever.
then they will just ignore it unless the chidlren are climbing about in the back.

tbh whether they enforce it or not, if you take children in a carthey should be straped into the seat or have a booster seat.

Youc an get boosters from £5 so i really can't see why anyone would run the risk of harming their child?
