We got a three-wheeler urban detour jobby when dd1 was very small and then a graco citisport when she was three months (you couldn't get them for newborns in those days). TBH it was dp's 'It's a vehicle! Hurrah!' obsession not mine (this is the man who, when I said I thought I was probably pregnant, replied 'oh god, I'll have to get a bigger car') but I do use both. And now dd1 is three sometimes she hitches a ride on the front bit of the three-wheeler when dd2 is in it.

The only cosy toes I have seen that you can buy separately from the pushchair are made from fleece, fake fur and fake suade.

nutcracker · 08/02/2004 22:09

God what will i do when ds no longer needs a buggy ?? I'll be heart broken. I already fell very strange if ever i go out without a buggy

misdee · 08/02/2004 22:12

thats the problem with cosy toes, non breathable materials. not good for kids with sqweaty/ezcema skin. looks like i might be making my own then.

They aren't very difficult to make misdee. I made my own. You can make it as big as you want then and get the right colours too.

Bekki · 08/02/2004 22:19

I think that nutcracker. I feel really uncomfortable when I go out and I haven't got a baby strapped to me or if I'm not pushing a buggy.

When DS1 was born my parents bought us a Bebecar 2-in-1 pram, it was very good but soon became impractical for our second floor flat and trips in the car. I then bought a Maclaren buggy, took it on holiday and ruined it carrying nappies and bottles of wine in the back, dragging it up the beach etc (still have this buggy and keep it for holidays, the wheels don't go right and it sort of hangs to one side). Bought another Maclaren buggy, the lie-back didn't work properly, got my money back and bought another Maclaren, this one lasted 13 months until the leg broke off. Shop exchanged it although they didn't have much to offer, chose a Chicco, used it to get home on bus to find that it didn't fit in the car, sold it in paper. Bought basic Urban Detour from Mothercare (mostly as it was the cheapest sturdy buggy they seemed to have), fantastic buggy, sturdy, very comfy, still have this and keep it in the car. For DS2 I have been using the Bebecar (we moved from 2nd floor flat) and feel as it has had a good innings now so have bought another Urban Detour from eBay, so far very happy with it, far lighter and easier to push than the Bebecar. I would never buy another umbrella buggy for anything other than holiday use.

For me a three wheeler has not been a fashion statement but a sensible choice, I'm sorry but IMO umbrella buggies are useless either that or I am very heavy handed with them.

Couldn't get on with slings either, tried a couple including the Wilkinet (borrowed from a friend), had fear of falling and squashing baby too.

We have this-

travel system from mothercare

But we will probably buy her a cheapie buggy when she turns one. We usually don't bother ourselves with the car seat bit on the pushchair, just use the normal pushchair

I REALLY hate the 3-wheelers.

bobthebaby · 09/02/2004 04:05

I pushed my 3 wheeler around the UK and felt very stupid. The door and shop aisles were too narrow, it didn't fit on escalators and there were no lifts. Public transport cannot cope with them. In the UK I found mine a complete waste of time and I wouldn't buy one if I lived there. I also would never take it on holiday there again.

However in NZ it's a different story (after all many of the top of the range ones are made here.)Everywhere is 3 wheeler friendly and anyone with a 3 in 1 is definately foreign. You see so many men jogging pushing one, people trundling them along the beach walking the dog, women power walking. My 3 wheeler only goes into the car occasionally, it's used for trips from home to replace a car. I think that's when they come into their own.

I'm similar to demented. Got through 3 different standard pushchairs (1 umbrella and two lie back) before buying my 3 wheeler when ds1 was about 15 months. I had no end of problems with the previous pushcairs, wheels fell off, the umbrella gave really bad electric shocks. In the end thought sod it and bought a 3 wheeler (pegasus so not cheap). It has been fantastic. When ds2 came along we bought the cot seat and it's still going strong 3 years later. It's been used on Dartmoor frequently, on the beach and for use round town. IN those three years I've had one puncture (dragged it to a bike shop and went and had a cup of coffee with ds1 before picking it up again).

It's been far better value than any of the others. I needed a double buggy for a while as well. Ended up buying a three wheeler as ds1 wouldnt even fit in the umbrella doubles.

And both 3 wheelers have fitted inside my front door.

hated them umtil I actually tried one and then found they were great.

if we had a third child the buggy would still be going strong.

Kittypickle · 09/02/2004 10:38

This time round I've bought a second hand 3 wheeler to cope with the mud and gravel on our neigbour's drive that we have to go down to get to the road. It's been great for that, for walks in the woods and on the beach so far. But it is a nightmare in the local shop and I would never take it shopping. I've got a M&P Pliko travel system as the car seat is one of the few that fits easily in the car. The combination of the 2 has worked well so far (early days, DS only 21 weeks)

SHIREENSMOM · 09/02/2004 16:55

buy the maclaren tecno xt its brilliant worth every penny

incywincy · 09/02/2004 17:27

misdee - would you recommend the mclaren for a large baby? Ds is 18mths and weighs about 32lbs, i have a graco citisport but have problems getting him out of it because of the bar. I can't have a 3 wheeler as I only use buses.

fairydust · 09/02/2004 17:39

my dd is 22months old and is very tall - we use the maclaren techno as we found it had more room both width and height wise

sliverx2 · 09/02/2004 18:50

at the moment we have Silver Cross 3 wheeler for the long walks as its a dream to push and a Silver Cross Compact which is a small compact buggy for the buses, still a pleasure to push

nutcracker · 09/02/2004 18:52

Didn't know silvercross did buggies, and there was me thinking i was a pushchair expert I have been looking on pushchair sites today and found a few more that i like. Oooh i'm so tempted.

SHIREENSMOM · 09/02/2004 19:00

i have a pushchair fetish too im sooo glad im not alone
