Objecting to a mobile phone mast

SoupDragon · 07/06/2006 17:03

I've had a letter notifying me of a planning application for a mobile phone mast about 400m from my house. I want to object to it (a) because it's going to be 12m tall with antennae and a dish on top and (b) health reasons (lots of children in the area)

Any suggestions of what to say? Where to find health information?

Ta.

You like? Grin
(You were in luck, son demanded to go to bed at 5.30... how could I refuse?... and I'm going out so no cooking, but not til 8).

Anything else you need? I'm bored!

good luck soupy .. there's been a campaign against one down the road from us (2 doors down from nursery, next to doctors, 2 primaries within the area) .. and its finally boiled down to the mobile company saying 'we don't care we'll put it up whatever the locals think'

Sad Angry

nannyme · 07/06/2006 20:08

Do you not use a mobile phone then?

SoupDragon · 07/06/2006 20:13

nannyme, what's that got to do with it? It's a 12m high mast with 3 antenna and a s*dding dish on the top! In a residential area. If they were planning to stick it on the roundabout 300m further up the road and on top of a hill I would have less objection to it.

Twiglett, I don't doubt they'll go ahead with it anyway but I need to object to it.

But they have to go somewhere and it is going to be near somebody unless it is up a tree in the countryside or something and then it probably won't serve its' purpose because it will be miles from anybody who needs a signal, surely?

I am not ignorant as to the health hazards, etc. but unless we accept not being able to use our mobiles in towns and villages (maybe you do?) then we have to accept that they might be in our proverbial backyards.

There was a protest about one near-ish to dd's old school which I refused to participate in for the same reasons. I need my mobile massively for work and could only do without it if all the rest of the world declined mobile technology.

Twiglett · 07/06/2006 20:57

WTF needs a phone that takes pictures, videos is internet compatible

I for one own a mobile that makes calls and makes texts .. which is suitable for any work IMV

Its the roll-out of 3G masts with no care for the local communities / placement within sensitive areas .. and then they're going to be replaced by 4G ..

all this technology creates radiation and there is no proof that they are safe .. especially not for small children

nannyme · 07/06/2006 21:10

Fair point twiglett I admit I was thinking more of regular masts.

Still,it is consumerism that primarily needs to be addressed. Maybe this can be achieved in a minor way by boycotting mast proposals but isn't really the root of the issue. I appreciate that if this mast is only 'necessary' to enable 3G technology then it takes the pish.

I too only use phone for text and calls and am highly alarmed by the uniformed choices we are making (albeit indirectly) as consumers due to the lack of evidence that these masts are not seriously harmful.

SoupDragon · 08/06/2006 21:35

nannyme, I live in a house and see the need for them but wouldn't let someone build one in my back garden because it is an inapproprate place.

This is a 3G mast Twig.

Noooooo!

I shall join you in letter writing.

(Even though my mobile reception in Sanderstead is shite.)

Yes, but this mast won't improve O2 reception in the back of Waitrose :o

OP posts:
Snafu · 08/06/2006 21:43

Although not sure about your suggestion it goes on the roundabout - I'd have to look at it then Grin

SoupDragon · 08/06/2006 21:44

I wouldn't really like it there either but wouldn't it be sensible to put it on the top of a hill?

OP posts:
Snafu · 08/06/2006 21:46

You would think so. But when did sense ever impact on planning applications? Anyway, then they'd have to get rid of that Lovely Flower Display sponsored by Manchesters Solicitors.

Aaaah, suburbia.

SoupDragon · 08/06/2006 21:49

Ah, but the sponsorship clearly works if you can remember the company name :o Should you need a solicitor you'll think "oooh, Mancester Solicitors... they sponsored that lovely horticultural masterpiece on the Sanderstead roundabou.t.."
