Am having wobbles about moving to Scotland - tell me some good things about it pls

First, I am Scottish. I love Scotland - it's gorgeous. But I have been away a long long time and I feel like I don't know the country any more.

Every time I go back I feel like Scotland has become more parochial and inward-looking. Now I know this can't be true...(can it?) but people seem so disinclined to talk about anything other than Scotland and Scottish things and I don't know if I can stand that for the rest of my life.

I know there have been lots of very good things that have changed since I left, the smoking ban for one. Just saw on another thread that humanist wedding ceremonies are now legal - very cool.

Tell me more....I know I'm going to love it again but if you could bolster the country's reputation it would be a big help!

I think my closest MNetter is 110 miles away!

schneebly · 05/06/2006 09:18

You dont see them much these days...honestly! [gein]

expatinscotland · 05/06/2006 09:20

Lovely homes to look at. Lovely walks.

Ok, I can't say much about the weather this year, but erm . . . things will get better, right?

Smoking ban.

You can breastfeed ANYWHERE and it's illegal for anyone to harrass you about it or tell you to move along.

Harvey Nicks w/yummy food.

Lots to do.

i live here!

scotland isnt so bad these days, not as much english-bashing (which i think is brilliant, cant stand all that rubbish) a lot more tolerant

the telly has changed, no more regional stuff like Grampian, Border etc, its all STV now

you need to go on a wee tour, remind yourself how gorgeous and breathtaking all the countryside is, Glencoe, Linlithgow Palace, Bell Rock, Trossachs, we could sit here all day listing them!

and have a night out in Glasgow, remind yourself how friendly everyone is

are you moving back to Fife? Dundee has a great shopping centre now, there is so much going on this summer for families in Dundee, Camperdown Park has a packed summer

and THINGS ARE CHEAPER! houses for one

i could go on

schneebly · 05/06/2006 09:22

Beautiful scenery, friendly people, mostly cheaper housing (Edinburgh excepted!)!

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:23

the smoking ban is fantastic

and you can bf to your hearts content anywhere you like

schneebly · 05/06/2006 09:23

x posts with np! Grin

expatinscotland · 05/06/2006 09:25

Houses are NOT cheaper in Edinburgh, though. And wages are low in comparison to the cost of housing. Glasgow's housing is also not cheap.

But other than that, it's fine.

And Tamum and I are here. :o

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:25

River City on the BBC

expatinscotland · 05/06/2006 09:27

DH calls it River S*&tty.:o

DD1 watches the Gaelic station - she likes the cartoons, especially the boy Coinneach.

Good live music! You might be in time for the Folk Festival at Sandy Bells.

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:27

Edinburgh Festival

Hogmanay

Forfar Bridies

Tayside berries (yummmm)

Tasty tap water

no fur in your kettle

Fresh Air

prettybird · 05/06/2006 09:27

... and if you look lost in the street, people will stop and ask you if you need any help, and often will even take you to wherever you're trying to get to. ("... I'm just going that direction myself! :)")

I used to embarrass an ex boyfriend by doing that to people in London. Wink

And you cannae beat the countryside! Grin

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:28

ooooooooooooooh expat i love Sandy Bells!

used to go there after work when the Infirmary was at the old site

Pruni · 05/06/2006 09:29

Am strangely cheered by the non-existence of Grampian TV - no more Kennedy Thompson, he always gave me the creeps.
And glad less English-bashing. I was brought up by a happily racist family and it took ages for me to see they were wrong.

I think I'm worried about knowing how to be Scottish again, I am quite anglicized. It took me ages to get used to the fact that strangers rarely chat here in, er, Oxford. So now when I go back I am quite uncomfortable about the intrusion.

Just having a big wobble really...

A good pal of mine - she's Irish and a lecturer - plays there often. Luckily she's playing whilst my parents are here so DH and I will be able to go enjoy some traditional music on a proper date!! :)

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:31

anyone else remember Reflections on Grampain telly? or Robin Galloway and The birthday spot?

no more North Tonight

schneebly · 05/06/2006 09:33

We got ulster telly here!

Pruni · 05/06/2006 09:33

Sandy Bells - had a few good nights there.
People are really friendly, aren't they? Shop assistants etc always seem so lovely.
I am ridiculously excited by the idea of no limescale and good tap water.
Expat I've met tamum, but am wary of scaring people off with my "Will you be my friend?" desperation!! Ha! You see, years ago I would have known how to do this but am so English now!!
