First, I am Scottish. I love Scotland - it's gorgeous. But I have been away a long long time and I feel like I don't know the country any more.

Every time I go back I feel like Scotland has become more parochial and inward-looking. Now I know this can't be true...(can it?) but people seem so disinclined to talk about anything other than Scotland and Scottish things and I don't know if I can stand that for the rest of my life.

I know there have been lots of very good things that have changed since I left, the smoking ban for one. Just saw on another thread that humanist wedding ceremonies are now legal - very cool.

Tell me more....I know I'm going to love it again but if you could bolster the country's reputation it would be a big help!

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and admit that people are friendlier in Glasgow Blush.

But compared to London, a happy slap is friendlier than that place :o.

Hate to tell you this nailpolish but i think North Tonight is still on! At least it was on Friday. I grew up with Border TV, Eric Wallace doing Lookaround, which should really have been called Carlisleround as they rarely went North of the Border!

prettybird · 05/06/2006 09:38

The other thing you need to get used to is looking north of the border during weather forecasts, rather rthan where you used to live. It took me ages to adjust.

.... and then you can get pissed off about the BBC weather chart, which is on a slant, so that Scotland is smaller than England. (after complaints, they did change the angle slightly). Grin

Wne I moved back after 10 years in England, it took me ages to stop "noticing" that someone had a Scottish accent! WinkShock.

dewmeadow · 05/06/2006 09:40

I love Scotland - people are fantastic crack, great music (anyone like Malinky?~)beautiful scenery, I met my husband there and got married there. I am dying to visit again!

nailpolish · 05/06/2006 09:41

saltire · 05/06/2006 10:16

Pruni, I used to live in Edinburgh. I love it. Every so often since moving away I really miss it and have to go back for a quick Edinburgh-fix! I think the smoking ban is great and I bfed my 1 year old out and about there quite recently and felt really comfortable doing so. That kind of forward-thinking beats the 'parochialism' for me any day.

You know you're going to love it again Grin

prettybird · 06/06/2006 08:41

So when are you likely to be moving back?

romany4 · 07/06/2006 00:53

So jealous!!
I lived in Scotland for 12 years, married my dh there and had both my boys there.
REALLY miss the scottish accent too.

Hope to go back one day..

Alipiggie · 07/06/2006 01:09

I miss haggis and I'm not even Scottish. I thought people in Glasgow friendlier too Expat :o. Both my boys were born there. Now they're busy becoming american and everything is now awesome!!!!!. Go along with everything everybody said. Scotland is a wonderful country so much so my nextdoor neighbours have decided that they're visiting next year and doing Scotland!!!! But I'm sorry i wouldn't trade the glorious sunshine here in Colorado. Although it's been 34 degrees for the last few days and it's only going to get hotter. I miss the green grass, trees and flowers but you can't have everything. You love moving back home. Say hello to Aud Reekie for me

fairyfly · 07/06/2006 01:37

seriously - Scotland is great and you can't beat the sense of 'community' and I think is is becoming more diverse and cosmopolitan all the time while still retaining a strong national identity.

Blandmum · 07/06/2006 07:32

Edinburgh is wonderful.

Scotland is god's own country.

Education system is better

And I'm Welsh so no bias!

All this and fudge doughnuts.
