Blimey! I just hope your babe isn't a dot like mine...he is 9 months and still wearing 3-6 month clothes so that coat would probably fit him in the summer - not a lot of good!!
Like you I think thats a silly sum of money to spend - but hey, it isn't your money....

Secur, are you saying that you were just humouring me??

Twiglett, don't stress, it's not your money! The only problem is if you think the coat is truly hideous when you see it (From a mum whose DD is always perfectly co-ordinated, right down to matching vest and pants!)

My DD has a mix of clothes - from George at Asda to Next and Gap to the odd designer wear too. Have to say designer stuff is normally only bought either for special occassions or if in sales. It isn't world stoppingly important to nme, just that she looks nice when we go out - but that doesn't mean it has to be expensive either. DD's great grandparents enjoy buying her lovely clothes from a proper baby's boutique and they are normally lovely but not for every day wear.

Last year's coat was a beautiful yellow Osh Kosh coat bought by my parents in America. Not cheap but very warm, lasted until this winter too and looked lovely.

This year's is a bargain - a green duffle coat from Gap sale - reduced down to £10. Really warm and DD loves it.

Hope you like the coat you have been bought Twiglett!

SenoraPostrophe · 30/01/2004 10:21

I think there are designer clothes and designer clothes - dd has some Osh Kosh clothes which will probably last until her grandchildren need them

I do hope the coat is a nice one for that money though!

marthamoo · 30/01/2004 10:24

Yikes - I hope you like it. You can always ebay it when baby grows out of it (is it a unisex coat, btw, or do you know what you're having? You don't need to tell us if you do, of course!)

Northerner · 30/01/2004 10:26

My local mothercare are selling Osh Kosh dungarees for £10. Bargain IMO.

Must say I love Timberland for little boys but not cheap. We have a Mcarther glen designer outlet near us and it is fab for designer bargains, especially the boxing day sale. I always but ds a Timberland coat for the following winter. Only pay about £20 and they are usually about £50.

I love designer but only if a bargain. Won't even pay full price in Gap. Overpriced IMO. Do splash out in their sales though.

Hulababy · 30/01/2004 10:26

We have lost DD's diesel t shirt Got it using a voucher for a catalogue so only cost be about £2 in total : No idea where it has got to though.

zebra · 30/01/2004 10:27

I dress DD in some beautiful designer items -- thankfully all cast-offs from aunt with rich tastes and an only child to buy for!
Sheesh, I'm just in agonising guilt right now about whether to buy Start-Rite shoes for DD, never mind stretching budget to label-names.

My kids clothes are mostly from H&M, Adams, Next and occasionally Gap (but only from the sale). I don't mind spending a bit more for DD1's clothes as i hope DD2 will then get some where out of them. We have TKMax by us, which sells lots of designer stuff, but you need to be able to spend hours going through the rails. I spotted some Christian Dior tops the other week but managed to resist, as they were a tenner but looked like they could of cost a couple of quid.

marialuisa · 30/01/2004 11:03

One of my favourite student jobs was acting as "Head of childrenswear" (only me and one other girl in the dept!) for Armani in Knightsbridge. But even I was surprised at what people would buy, let alone pay for, just because of the logo. The store had some really hideous items, I remember an author (Bob bryson, P.J. O'Rourke maybe) describing such designer clothes as designed by the Boss's useless brother-in-law. Nevertheless on sale day, that pile of Harlequin lycra tank-tops, for men, went flying out the door for £50 a time.

LIZS · 30/01/2004 11:48

Wow, even at that price I hope it is worth it and gets worn lots. ds had a coat from Gap which was reduced from 90 to less than 20 - wool/ cashmere green jacket with cord collar and dd had red traditional wool coat, similarly reduced, which had a cute matching bonnet which we nicknamed her little House on the Prairie coat. Do have the occasional extravagances but most at vastly reduced prices (dd gets Mexx that way).

GenT · 30/01/2004 15:02

I don't know if I should really input on this thread regarding the coat. I would have to know the make and fibre content, style, all the technical bits before I say it is worth the money or you are just paying for a label.

If I saw it and weighed all that up, and it seemed highly profitable to buy instead of making it, then I would snap it up there and then. Being a designer myself, it has its benefits such as I am able to whip up anything for dd in a short space of time and whenever I want. But most importantly, no matter how spoilt dd will try to be from aunties and uncles plus cousins, they are held back in buying clothes for her since I can make them. They would go wild and spend ridiculous amounts of money which IMO, she doesn't really need. Food, water and air are staples besides clean clothes, not lots of clothes.

If you want to put a value and say if it is worth it, think about the fabric and style, will go on through the year (passed down) and if it is durable IMO. It also depends on the location of make, a poor country or rich one, child labour, offshore production and the list goes on.

That is me and my soap box done.

Well i do like designer clothes but i also like Adams,Next,Gap but i honestly don't mind places like Primark,George etc As long as i look at something and like it and think it will last or be nice and warm etc i am not Fused!
It would have to be a very nice pratical well made coat for me to spend £38 on if i must say so myself but hey as its not your money being spent dont worry!
I brought my son a Karki Green Parker Coat from next lovely and warm all over a gorgeous coat and that cost £22 and i had to IF and UR about that price! If i new he would get lots of wear out of a coat i would not be so bothered but as he is only 16 months and growing every second i could not risk it!

GenT · 30/01/2004 15:26

that is a good method twiglett, I do admit we get a lot of essentials from ASDA, it is good quality and maybe because I don't have the sense to clothes shop, not even for myself. I do like a good run around B&Q, Focus, Home Depot, Ikea or anywhere that doesn't have to do with clothes.

JennH · 30/01/2004 15:38

Oh my gosh! I buy E's clothes in Next, ASDA, M&S, Tescos, BHS...nothing designer, she barely wears them anyway.

Gem13 · 30/01/2004 17:21

Off topic again but where do people buy Mexx stuff from?

I've bought a few Mexx things from eBay and been really pleased with them but never heard of them before.

LIZS · 30/01/2004 17:26

Debenhams had some in the Summer - dh bought a few bits there in the Sale. Also I think JLP and House of Fraser may do it. I'm in Europe and it is readily available in department stores.

nutcracker · 30/01/2004 17:27

I get the kids underwear and pj's from Primark as they are so cheap and wash reall well. I like Asda'a clothes too, and did you know that the person who designs them is the same person who does nexts clothes ??? He is called george something or other (hence the george range at asda).

easy · 30/01/2004 17:28

my Mum's friend owns a babywear shop in chesterfield, and they have all the designer names. I have bought stuff there, but only in the sale, and Mum's friend knocks a bit more off for me anyway.

Very sad tho', she told me of a mum who came in a few weeks ago and bought some very expensive clothes to bury her baby in. We all had a cry about that.

Beccarollover · 30/01/2004 18:15

Both of mine have some designer bits from adoring relatives and friends and I buy the odd thing if I love it but staples from Next, H and M Gap etc
