OK, so we all hate Blair. Election tomorrow - who would you vote for and why?

I find this a really tricky one atm.

Blair lacks credibility, has let down the name of the Labour party. It's inconceivable that I could vote tory so that leaves Charles Kennedy. Have the Lib Dems got any real chance of ever gaining a majority.

Not voting not an option for me, get too emotional about the 'women died for my right to vote' argument.

Anyone want to discuss?

No, I quite like him too Donnie!

lazyeye · 30/01/2004 14:10

I'd happily still vote Labour at any election, but I do still think they have got off very lightly in the Hutton/war fall-out. The should make their own lessons from it.

Tinker · 30/01/2004 14:17

I'm sure I will still vote Labour at the next election since voting Tory is simply not an option. But I want a Labour party, not a new labour party

I was 14 when Thatcher came to power, I never ever want to return to those years. Out of interest, for those who would vote Tory, how old were you when Thatcher came to power?

I was about 14 too, can't remember what year she got in. I have always loathed her and I still remember how vile the tORIES WERE.(OOPS!). What I especially fear about them is their hatred of foreigners and immigrants. Remember Tebbit telling immigrant Pakistanis they had no business supporting Pakistan in the cricket tournaments. I also believe they have no real interest in international matters, like the Middle East crisis.I don't think Blair is a saint at all, but he's better than a lot .

katierocket · 30/01/2004 14:27

zebra, donnie - I'm with you on this one.

people have short memories.

I was 15 when Thatcher came to power. I suffered badly in the property crash following Black Monday (flat bought for £65K, subsequently sold for just over £45K). Yes, they got it wrong then - but so did lots of other countries. I thought Labour were going to be better this time - they probably would be if not for Gordon Brown (the only reason I don't detest him is because of the sad loss of Jennifer) - But still they borrow, borrow, borrow and tax, tax, tax. Do they never learn?

donnie · 30/01/2004 14:40

I voted for Kinnock too, Nicksie! I was sooo sad when Labour lost that 1992 ( I think) election. Remember how the SUN advised everyone to vote Tory and not Labour ? how times have changed....! not that I am a complete Guardianista wannabe either.People do have short memories, yes. There is far better racial integration and equal opportunity now than under the Tories. But also high crime and not enough curbs on big business IMO.

bossykate · 30/01/2004 14:55

don't assume that everyone on here who has said they don't like blair automatically doesn't like labour. i would happily vote labour with gordon brown in charge and think he has actually been the architect of many redistributive policies which have made a difference to people's lives. i find the suggestion that if you don't like tb you must be some sort of thatcherite rather baffling.

katierocket · 30/01/2004 15:00

bossykate - just wondered - have you always disliked TB or just last few years? (am geniunely interested, not being flippant )

Tinker · 30/01/2004 15:00

Agree with you bk. GB seems to be the genuine socialist. His tax credits are are even more surprising, maybe, when you think that he wasn't a father when they were introduced. However, I would worry if he was PM that he may feel the need to appease more people. You can often be more effective in the background where you are less open to scrutiny.

OP posts:
Jimjams · 30/01/2004 15:18

BK makes a good point. I have an open mind to labour- without Blair I think they would me a lot more acceptable to me. He's the one that makes me feel sick.

bossykate · 30/01/2004 18:27

katierocket, i can date my dislike of him to the london mayoral elections in 2000 for the reasons i stated in my earlier post.

Cam · 30/01/2004 19:47

I can't vote Labour or Tory, hate both equally. Teflon Tony's got to be the slimiest in along time.

doormat · 30/01/2004 19:51

no-one they are all shite, hypocrits who speak through their arses

sorry dont mean to offend anyone but that is my opinion

bunny2 · 30/01/2004 20:59

Doormat, you sum up politicians beautifully!

The Conservatives will still get my vote because the Labour taxation strategy has had a big impact on my family and we are much worse off for it (a subject close to my heart having spent the afternoon at the Inland Revenue arguing over a few pence, bloody petty civil servants)

OldieMum · 30/01/2004 22:19

I loathe TB, though the reasons for loathing him have changed down the years. I used to loathe his shallowness and slavish following of focus-group opinion. But that was before his new 'I have no reverse gear' incarnation, which is undemocratic and arrogant. Brown would be a better PM, as he lies behind the redistributive fiscal policies they have brought in quietly. But he likes big businesspeople too much for my taste. I used to think the LibDems had some potential as a left alternative, but they are so ineffectual. As a granddaughter of miners, I share Nye Bevan's view of the Tories, I'm afraid ('lower than vermin' and could never vote for them. But I'm not someone whose vote TB thinks he has to worry about - as there is nowhere to go other than voting Labour. So I'm disenfranchised, effectively.

Clarinet60 · 31/01/2004 17:56

I like Tone, as I've said, but loved the description of him on TV the other night after Hutton: a cross between Houdini and a greased piglet.
LOL!
