OK, so we all hate Blair. Election tomorrow - who would you vote for and why?

I find this a really tricky one atm.

Blair lacks credibility, has let down the name of the Labour party. It's inconceivable that I could vote tory so that leaves Charles Kennedy. Have the Lib Dems got any real chance of ever gaining a majority.

Not voting not an option for me, get too emotional about the 'women died for my right to vote' argument.

Anyone want to discuss?

Northerner · 29/01/2004 10:44

I would vote labour. Red through and thgrough me.
I would never vote tory - IMO they are not strong enough as a party to win an election. Lets hope Lib Dem's wouldn't get in, I don't believe they have any real policies when it comes to running the country.

I do believe that Blair will not be PM for much longer though. Gordon Brown will make a superb PM IMO.

Will watch this thread with interest.

Twink · 29/01/2004 10:44

You couldn't have described my feelings any more accurately.

I find it really, really depressing that legislation is just being shoved through regardless of public feeling and the f*ing arrogance of Blair (don't start me on AC) makes me livid but not as much as the lack of any credible opposition. Makes the Thatcher years seem rational (OK, maybe not but you know what I mean)

Some bits of me would like to think that the Lib Dems are becoming the Opposition but am uninspired by our LD MP; admittedly he won the seat in a Tory stronghold but is spineless and Tory in all but name.

Interested to hear what others think.

Twink · 29/01/2004 10:46

Oops, Northerner got in before me, I mean I share Tinker's feelings but that's not to say I don't agree with Northerner's views !

SenoraPostrophe · 29/01/2004 10:48

This is tricky. But it was also tricky last time - I voted Labour after much worrying (but I was voting for our MP rather than Blair). This time I think I would have to vote Lib Dem. That's if I remember to renew my registration in time!

oliveoil · 29/01/2004 10:52

I have always voted Labour but would vote Tory or not at all at the next election. Blair makes my skin crawl with his false manner and lies and he has made an absolute SHAMBLES of this country, everything is worse. I don't agree with any of his policies and I can't see a different leader making any difference to the party. In summary, he is an arse and I am so dissapointed he didn't get his head on the block this week.

Debbiethemum · 29/01/2004 10:53

I feel the same as you Tinker, and I will probably vote for the LibDem's as well. If my MP hadn't turned out to have no mind of his own and always does what Tony says, I would have voted for him as he used to do a lot for the community.

There is always a chance of everybody moving to LibDem as what other choice do we really have !!

I feel the same as you about voting. I always remember South Africa and when they got the vote, seeing people prepared to drive for 2 days to cast their vote and so many people here cannot be bothered to walk for 5 mins or fill in a postal vote application. Please note I said bothered, I do realise it is difficult for some people to get to the polling station.

Jimjams · 29/01/2004 10:58

I'll be voting tactically. Whoever will get our labour yes woman out. The opposition is crap but I need to make a protest against this govt. I actually think they are slimier, more arrogant and less trustworthy than the last Tory administration- and lets be honest that's saying something.

JanH · 29/01/2004 11:12

I live in a Tory stronghold so can do sod all about anything. Our MP's OK though and will be showing DH and DSs round the Commons at half-term (he is a back-bencher now so has time on his hands) but I will probably vote LD even so! (No Labour candidate here.)

JanH · 29/01/2004 11:12

Just realised that makes it sound as if he's been touting for custom

bossykate · 29/01/2004 11:15

the greens.

WideWebWitch · 29/01/2004 11:16

Tinker, I agree, hard one this. I absolutely could not bring myself to vote Labour again after Iraq and Hutton, amongst other things, (and I never thought I'd hear myself say that) but I can't see myself as a Conservative voter either. Hmm, Charles Kenndedy...I haven't a clue about Lib Dem policies actually but I think now might be the time to find out! Agree re the right to vote, I think it's important we do. Oh and I agree that Thatcher almost looks rational compared to Bliar.

JanH · 29/01/2004 11:19

Here you go, www.

Twinkie · 29/01/2004 11:20

Your vote will be wasted voting green Kate - you need to vote for someone who actually has a chance of ousting that tirant Bliar - he is just such an utter cretin IMO and so I will probably vote LibDem - mind you not sure they will have a chance of getting in around here.

Better than voting for the BNP who my father finances - mind you they got in where he lives (well inthe next ward) - funnily enough the guy who got in was 2nd generation Italian immigrant!!

I think he will get in at the next election (Blair that is) people are just too frightened and to vote any other way and change things - oh well nothing really changes for people like me no matter who is in!!

JanH · 29/01/2004 11:21

They don't appear to have a defence policy. I think they should.

Oooh, I like the look of some of those Janh. (sorry to sound like I'm shopping for tomatoes or something!)

Janh · 29/01/2004 11:35

Well it might as well, Stressy

LOL at the shopping list, www. Maybe they should ask us what we'd like on it.

Janh · 29/01/2004 11:38

Nothing to do with this thread but there is a link on that LibDem policies page to "MP's Surgery" . Looks very useful.

Tinker · 29/01/2004 11:38

Stressy - think I'd feel proud of a brother who'd done that as well.

I voted Lib Dem at the last election as a "protest" but it is such a Labour stronghold round here it is pointles. My MP is not bad actually, she sorted out my Tax Credits in 24 hours.

The trouble is, there is just NO Labour party, so where does that leave those of us who want one? Where have all the Tony Benns gone?

OP posts:
Janh · 29/01/2004 11:41

LibDems are well left of New "Labour" these days.

The fight here will be between LD and Tory. The LD who holds the seat is okay (I've chatted with him about breastfeeding and suitable bras!) so I'll likely vote for him. I wouldn't want to vote for the LD MSP, though; he's a complete slimeball.

Northerner · 29/01/2004 11:53

OMG Stressy I could have written your post. I was brought up in a red household, for as long as I can remember My Dad was, and still is a labour councillor in Redcar. I too helped deliver stuff for him as a child. A couple of years ago I could argue politics, and hold my own with the best of them. I was a party member, canvassed at election time and did number catching at the polling station etc. But now my membership has lapsed, and my passion seems to have gone. But don't think I could bring myself to vote any other way.

Blu · 29/01/2004 11:57

Although a lifelong natural lefty, i have never actually been a member of the labour party. i am considering joining for the first time, IF individual members get a vote in who stands for PM, and could play a part in voting Blair out. Could someone please explain how voting and PM candidate choice work within the part? (I should know...blush)
