Dare me, go on, dare me...

It's a bone of contention with me that the letters which come home from school (ds1 for now, ds2 as well, as of September) invariably have spelling, grammatical and/or punctuation mistakes in. For example, the teacher who is Literacy Co-ordinator seems to have no idea how apostrophes work and has signed her name to several glaring apostrophical (OK, I made that up) errors...

Another classic this week: a covering letter and sponsorship form in aid of Art's Week. Three times it's written as Art's week, so not just a one-off typo.

I suggested to dh - and he is begging me to do it now - that on the sponsorship form (two incidents of the error) I add a note to the effect:

Always happy to support school in any way but I have to ask: who is Art and why are we supporting him?

Shall I....shall I?

I too can't believe the school letters that are sent out with spelling mistakes. Last time a letter advising about the topic subject of "leavers and gears" when it was obviously "levers" grrrr

Ds's year 1 teacher once wrote in his home/school record book "James was abscent" so I circled it in red and drew a "sad face" in the margin. She never liked me anyway

And when dd was in year 1 her teacher was writing out the weeks spellings

"ten
twenty
thirty
fourty
etc etc"

I pointed out her error and she argued with me about it until dd pointed out she was in fact wrong!

I once sent back a letter to DS1's school with corrections in red; although it was not well received, there were no mistakes in the next letter home.

Do it!!!

I received a letter yesterday about a new after-school football club that had "you're" instead of "your" - produced by football coach who is also a teacher and gives the MOST expensive one-to-one tuition!

As a secretary (in my previous life) I know it is sometimes hard to see glaring errors in something you have produced yourself as you are just too close to it - that's why you ask someone to proof-read it!!
