As you are all prob aware I follow the Gf routine and am also on her website and this was posted for us to see.

Dear Members,

In response to your emails regarding the statement in The Times Newspaper on 9th May 2006. We would like to confirm that neither Gina or her lawyers have put pressure on Mumsnet regarding the criticism that her methods receive on their forums. Gina was forced to seek legal
advice regarding other very serious issues with Mumsnet, and we will in the near future make a public statement as to her reasons for this. It would appear that some Mumsnet members are demanding a ban of the
Gina Ford name on the site. Gina herself would welcome this, as her forthcoming statement will confirm, she has for very valid reasons, no wish to be associated with the Mumsnet site.

As an ex-marketeer .. I have to say I think this whole fiasco is incredibly bad news for GF's empire.

Alienating a section of your potential target market to this extent, particularly when the internet stories spread like wildfire

It is not a true maxim that all news is good news ... especially in the world of parenting advice IMO

Twiglett · 14/05/2006 20:59

what country is '.ca'

have you seen the reviews on \link{http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451202430/702-4660558-7704019\amazon.ca}?

tamum · 14/05/2006 21:01

Canada, and no but am just off to look....

WideWebWitch · 14/05/2006 21:02

I agree Twiglett. Do any marketing or PR people here think this furore is good news for GF? I doubt it.

Agree, good post fillyjonk.

tamum · 14/05/2006 21:03

Hmm, bit of a divide between nationalities there, isn't there?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/05/2006 21:04

Canada, i believe.

WideWebWitch · 14/05/2006 21:04

\link{http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/2DO43L3RVYYNO/102-5451464-6384937?%5Fencoding=UTF8\interesting list from amazon.com!}

alexsmum · 14/05/2006 21:11

good to see the gary ezzo book on the list. his theory is basically beat your children into submission to make them do what you want.

what pisses me off about objections to 'demand feeding' is that it supposes that babies have less right than us to eat when hungry. imagine if we were hungry and someone bigger and stronger wouldn't let us eat because it wasn't 'time'!!Angry

WideWebWitch · 14/05/2006 21:13

I like those lists, there's one of books to read aloud to a child that adults will like too, I must see what's on it (sorry to go ot!)

harpsichordcarrier · 14/05/2006 21:14

Ezzo's stuff is vile vile vile.
I don't even want to post his theories and recommendations. yuk

alexsmum · 14/05/2006 21:15

i agree hc.truly horrifying.

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2006 21:16

Also alexsmum, having someone else decide when you are hungry must lead to the body's natural and desirable hungry / full signals getting all screwed up. i think how we feed our children in the early years is responsible for a lot of eating disorders / obesity problems - not many adults seem to have any idea when they are hungry and when they are full :(

harpsichordcarrier · 14/05/2006 21:17

I am not a violent person but I swear if I met Gary Ezzo I would smack him with a big old stick myself
or even better get someone three times his size to do it instead Angry

Do you know I have a friend who is very laid back, very loving with the children etc etc

When ds's sleep was getting me down I moaned to her one day and she produced this book for me..."This is what we used, I think it will really help you"

It was bloody Ezzo Shock I could not have been more surprised :(

alexsmum · 14/05/2006 21:19

hc-don't use a stick though.use something like a plastic spatula that won't leave a markAngry

alexsmum · 14/05/2006 21:20

really franny? what did you say? do?

zippitippitoes · 14/05/2006 21:21

i think though as parents we do mostly decide when food is on offer and what we offer once children are children rather than infants. I think some people find this easier than others. I'm sure there have been studies of children in boarding school given as much food but without any control, who always felt hungry. i used to get this staying with people, made me realsie I snacked all day.

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2006 21:23

I made my excuses and left Blush

I could see no real point in trying to have any further discussion about it

I mean what could you possibly say to someone who had followed that book?

It is so odd, she is a genuinely lovely person :(

alexsmum · 14/05/2006 21:27

how weird.
there's nowt so queer a sfolk.....

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 21:42

GF potty training was a disaster for us. She makes a big thing about the child needing to be able to communicate their need to go to the toilet, have enough language etc. Well what we didn't know was that as an adult ds1 is not going to have enough language. Eventually decided to stop waiting for ds1 to speak and started potty training. He got there eventually.......

harpsichordcarrier · 14/05/2006 21:44

yes, the thing about encouraging babies to have "healthy" eating habits by getting into the habit of eating at particular times.
whereas every piece of research/advice about healthy eating/weight loss I have ever come across stresses the importance of acknowledging hunger signals and stopping when you're full.
weird

arfy · 14/05/2006 21:55

oh Gary Ezzo

what a tosser

and you can quote me on that! I would like to prosecute him for child abuse TBH
