Are there any other foreign mums out there?
How did you cope with being a new mum in a different country with no family around to help out?

My mum and MIL satyed with me ofr 3 weeks each around and after the birth of my dd, it seemed a good idea at the time, but in hindsight maybe it wasn't.
What was your experience like?

Children are spoilt rotten in Italy and are allowed to stay up until late, they are even allowed in bars and restaurant ;-)

My mother is coming next month as I'll be having my baby then, and she's planning to stay for a month: heaven for me, she'll love any minute of it and I will have some time to get used to my new life. However, Elululu I can see my self regretting not being in Italy like you in a few months down the line...

Good luck with the move to the country, that is a brilliant idea. Good also the idea to have an Italian au pair if you plan to speak Italian to your daughter, I wish we had an extra room to do the same, maybe next year...

Our best holiday ever was to Sicily when DS was 8 months. He just got so much attention from everybody, it was fantastic. At one stage his pram was literally mobbed by a group of around 15 school girls. We are flying out to the Amalfi Coast this Friday and I suspect that at 17 months and with an endless passion for pasta, DD will also be the subject of a lot of attention from the locals.

eidsvold · 29/04/2003 18:22

doormat · 29/04/2003 18:59

Sunny Boys (triangle ice lollies) and half the time you got a FREE sticker inside.

Sorry about the rambling but this thread has brought back so many memories.

Meanmum · 29/04/2003 19:14

Chicco Rolls. My all time favourite. Steak pies with nothing added, ie. onions, mushrooms, kidneys etc.

Cold winter days snuggled up warm in front of the telly watching Aussie Rules and men in very tight short shorts.

eidsvold · 29/04/2003 19:19

ohhh greasy chikko rolls.... and the kookaburras - saw a number of them when we were back home recently - my mum is their morning supplier of meat and so got a picture of three on the hoist waiting for breakfast....

need to go and cook dinner as you are making me hungry

SUnny boys - especially from the show bags you got from the Ekka in August...

don't feel so homesick now... I can just pop in here and reminisce

Meanmum · 29/04/2003 19:21

Redskins, Snakes Alive, Summer Rolls (Europa Bars), Sesame Bars, Honey Nougat Bars, Kool Mints.

The list goes on.

slug · 29/04/2003 20:38

(Homer Simpson type drool)...Mmmm twisties. STOP STOP

SofiaAmes · 29/04/2003 22:40

SofiaAmes · 29/04/2003 22:44

And I'm the woman who brings back suitcases full of american toilet paper, q-tips, ivory soap, towels, sheets....

whymummy · 29/04/2003 22:58

i miss my mums cooking i do cook a lot of spanish food but somehow paella just doesnt taste the same,my spanish omelettes are yummy!!

ps i also miss snails

tomps · 30/04/2003 00:47

meanmum and slug - never mind your fancy foreign muck - I hope you two stock up on bacon, egg and bubble at the Borough caff before tackling the market. I'd be buying twice as many venison burgers if I wasn't already full of bubble !

eidsvold · 30/04/2003 06:59

Just a thought do any of you buy from the Aussie shop in Covent Garden - ohh that reminds me I am going to be up that way on Saturday - mm might have to drop in and get my fix now that you have made me so desperate for those lovely aussie LOLLIES and CHIPS. Save me ordering on line....

sankes alive - bite the heads off and stretch them... yummy!!

Laughs at Sofia - just recently bought back a 2kg tub of Napisan ( the one you get in the UK is just not the same - aussie one cleans and soaks better.... esp. white baby clothes)

doormat · 30/04/2003 07:27

eidsvold- unfortunately I live in the North-West but my daughter is based near there so I will get here to go. Do they sell twisties there?

eidsvold · 30/04/2003 18:57

Doormat - THEY DELIVER!!! You can order on line and they will deliver - most things.... That is what I used to do when I could not get to Covent Garden. I am sure they do Twisties... I will check if I get there on Saturday.

Meanmum · 30/04/2003 19:05

I miss Sard Wonder Soap too. I bring it back with me and also get anyone else coming over to bring it for me.

I also miss Sorbolene cream. I have dermititis and it's the only thing non medicinal that fixed it without a problem. Ship that over in tubs too and have even converted friends to it but now have to supply them.

Venison sausages. I love them. The Venison Bourginon pies that one of the shops have at Borough Market are to die for. The chicken shop does the best turkey and cranberry sausages I've had in my life.

hana · 05/12/2003 00:10

I'm missing skating on lakes! (not quite frozen yet at home I don't think) DH wants to go skating at that place in town (???) the big National Trust place, or at Hampton Court...don't really want to go and spend a small fortune to skate for a little while with hundreds of other people! Bah humbug! Also missing my family, not going home for Christmas again this year
anyone else not going home for the holidays?

zebra · 05/12/2003 06:09

Because I'm such a tabulator:
Danish: Dane
Italian: Chiara71, Caterina, Elelulu
Spanish: Whymummy
Kenyan: Nance
Ozzie: Bells2, Meanmum, Eidsvold,
Kiwi: Slug, LKM, florenceuk,
Canadian: Hana
Yank(?), but I bet you're East Coast: SofiaAmes(?)
Californian: zebra.

I miss Mexican food, nice weather in winter, my family. I'm a cultural refugee from the rest.

FairyMum · 05/12/2003 07:22

You can add me to the list of a (sometime) homesick Swede. I go home nearly once a month to see my family, but then I am lucky who can afford to as Sweden isn't that far away. Most of my friends are other Swedes anyway, so I have got quite a good network of like-minded blondes,)
What I miss the most is the more relaxed attitude to children people have in Sweden. The whole country is much more child-friendly and family-oriented.

CafeCroissant · 05/12/2003 09:31

I'll join the group if you don't mind (I used to be Frenchgirl). I do miss France and my family, go back at Xmas and in the summer so that's not too bad. Quite homesick at the moment though...
Are we meant to have group hugs by the way?

august24 · 05/12/2003 09:46

I am from the east coast of the U.S.A, Boston. We just moved here. I know that SofiaAmes is actualy from California.

ghengis · 05/12/2003 10:17

Does Irish qualify? Thanks to Ryanair it's very easy to get home these days but I still wish I could 'belong' again. Over here I'm Irish and over there I'm English, though I lose my English acent after a few guinnesses! I stock up on Chef Sauce, Tayto, Superquinn sausages (the best in the world!), Ballymaloe relish, and my Mum's apple pie...............aaaaagh!
