Brighton People - where to live, Preston Park or Seven Dials?

Pollyanna · 09/05/2006 14:26

I wondered whether I could get an insider view of those 2 areas? We live in London and after nearly a year of looking have found not one, but two houses we like. Schools aren't an issue (we equally like Downs/Davigdor, and are equally unlikely to get into either), so wondered what the Brighton view of the two areas is.

I always thought I would prefer Hove - closer to the sea etc, but the house (and garden)we have found in Preston Park is bigger. What are the reputations of Preston Park/seven Dials, which would have the most toddler groups, erm, anything else?? (I have children ranging in age from 1 to 7)

Typical, we were despairing of ever finding a house, and now we find two!

thanks

that's what I thought. Thanks. I just wanted to hear it from someone who actually knows it.

I took one look on the map and thought OMG.

I think I'll keep bidding on properties and see what I get that way.

Cheers Smile

HappyMumof2 it's not a crap place to live, no. I don't know it that well. It's a bit out of the way but Woodingdean is up on the hill by the reacecourse. Some spectacular veiws of the sea and the downs. It's nice a quiet too. Have a look around and see what you think. Find out about buses into town because Brighton's a nightmare for parking in town and Woodingdean's a long way out.

HappyMumof2 · 09/05/2006 20:46

Thanks spidermama.

I feel inclined to go for Whitehawk as opposed to Woodingdean as although I've heared it's not great, at least it's nearer to central Brighton.

I wonder how Whitehawk compares to Dalston? Probably be a walk in the park for my kids!

spidermama · 09/05/2006 20:57

TBH I'd avoid Whitehawk.
I didn't know you were in Dalston. I know Dalston a bit from my ravey, record buying days. (sigh!)
I think Woodingdean is nicer. Whitehawk's a fair way out too you know and the secondary school closed down recently. It was infamous - made all the national headlines.
Woodingdean is positively rural compared with Dalston, and really lovely views. Lots of kids around too.

Have a look and I'd be interested to hear how you get on. Good luck with it.

HappyMumof2 · 09/05/2006 21:10

Thanks Smile

woodingdean isn't too bad(not far from fancy a coffee?) the primary is ok have a good library, afterschool club and think it is in the catchment area for longhill. I prefer it to whitehawk as don't like it there(cos it's in a dip makes me feel hemmed in) tbh I would prefer moulscombe to whitehawk.

Rach69 · 09/05/2006 21:59

Blimey this brings back memories of the Seven Dials, I went to school near there (mainly snogging in the Good Companions). I'd go for Preston Park, not Whitehawk! Sorry not a fan of Moulscoomb either, my sister had her first house there and had to get two dobermans! (anyone remember the babes in the wood murders?). Another sister lived on Bear Road just up from the ? diner where breakfasted after clubbing (what was my mother thinking of!).

2shoes · 09/05/2006 22:10

think there are two differnt people one looking at seven dials/ preston park another woodingdean/whitehawk or am i confused

spidermama · 09/05/2006 22:13

You're right 2shoes and so to summarise...

Pollyanna, the original poster, is torn between the Dials and Preston Park.

Happymumof2 is looking at Whitehawk versus Woodingdean.

2shoes · 09/05/2006 22:24

was getting confused there thanks.

HappyMumof2 · 09/05/2006 22:28

yes, sorry, I hijacked the thread Blush

Wish I was looking at Preston Park/Seven Dials Sad

I'll get what I'm given, unfortunately!!

Spongebob · 09/05/2006 22:33

Rach69....I think it was called the Market Diner...I vaguely remember having a few after-club breakfasts there too

spidermama · 09/05/2006 22:33

Happy, Woodingdean will be heaven after Dalston. I'm not dissing Dalston, but I think it's better when you don't have kids iykwim. I used to live in Brixton which has a similar sort of vibe.

2shoes · 09/05/2006 22:40

the diner was brill used to live in bear road and went there a lot.
HappyMumof2 are you just looking for council or Ha

Rach69 · 09/05/2006 22:40

Spongebob - thanks for that, it was the Newmarket diner wasn't it? Before the days of 24/7 living.

I'd say Woodingdean and Preston Park :)

Rach69 · 09/05/2006 22:44

Sorry totally off tangent but nice memories of plodding up Bear Road to see my boyfriend in Bevendean (just past the crem, v romantic! no money for the bus...) Slightly more on tangent, my brother had nice HA house in Bevendean, it's much nicer now.

2shoes · 09/05/2006 22:52

Rach69 when you say bevendean where do you mean(nosy I know)

Pollyanna · 09/05/2006 22:53

my sister has applied for a job in Bevendean school.

HappyMumof2 · 10/05/2006 10:16

Sorry to hyjack again but trying to decide whether to put in a last minute bid for a property in Newick Road,Moulsecoomb.

Worth a go or not??

TIA Smile

noddyholder · 10/05/2006 10:19

moulsecoomb is a biggish estate which has had a lot of improvement recently There are varios types of houses there and it is definitely better than whitehawk and is easy to get to town.A fair few houses come up for sale in newick road so it seems there is a good mix of council and private which I would think is a good sign.A friend of mine got housed there following a bitter divorce and she moved from a fairly posh area and she absolutely loves it and has lovely helpful neighbopurs.I would go for it

HappyMumof2 · 10/05/2006 10:34

Smile Thankyou!!

spidermama · 10/05/2006 18:56

I have a friend in Moulescombe and I quite like it. Definitely better than Whitehawk. It backs onto the downs so lovely views. Incidentally there's a fab new soft play area there too with excellent coffee and food.

2shoes · 10/05/2006 19:00

i prefer moulscombe to whitehawk.. sure people are nice in both places but moulscombe just seems better places. not good for secondry schools but then nor is whitehawk

RnB · 10/05/2006 19:18

I live in Preston Park and I really love it here (I am actually on Robertson Rd, Ladyjess!) Its nice and quiet with nice families around but there is loads going on at the same time. Personally I would go for the house that you like the most because in Brighton you are so near to everything else!
