Beau (pronounced Bo)

I've loved this name for ages and to my utter suprise dh does too!

Just one thought though,
our surname also begins with B and has 2 syllables.

Will it sound silly?

Not keen, to be honest, as a given name - among other things you'd be committing him to a lifetime of having to spell it. Which I didn't anticipate when I gave my ds a name which is only known in one corner of Britain.

Might well be nice as the name you call him by, so long as he turns out to be beautiful, which of course he will. Can you think of another name beginning with B you like, then Beau can be the pet name he's known by?

Oh, just on names that mean a particular physical appearance, I knew some people whose son was going to be called Butch - until he arrived, with soft curls and long eyelashes.

Peter used to work with a young man call Bo, he was gorgeous Grin

I have a relative called Beau. It was spelt Bo when he was little and then he decided to change it to Beau when older. His name is William - so I don't know if it is a diminutive of William or coming from somewhere else. I think it is a gorgeous name, but only spelt Beau (because I wouldn't wish on anyone going through school named after smelly armpits)

Thanks for the replies Smile

I prefer people to be honest. If you don't like it you don't like it.

It wouldn't do to all be the same Grin

Nice to hear that there are a few others with the name too.

Great name. Especially with the alliteration in your second name. Very cool.

Passionflower · 06/05/2006 21:41

Umm, TBH I'd worry a bit about school yard teasing...

Frenchgirl · 06/05/2006 21:43

don't send him on an exchange trip to France though

Nbg · 06/05/2006 21:45

School yard teasing doesn't bother me tbh because there are so many children now with different names and besides children can take the mickey out of anything really.

Why is that FG?

Or am I being totally thick here Grin

OP posts:
Frenchgirl · 06/05/2006 21:47

because it means beautiful

Nbg · 06/05/2006 21:48

Ahhh!

Well he will be beautiful Grin

OP posts:
Frenchgirl · 06/05/2006 21:50

I'm sure he will be Nbg, I just think it's quite a name to carry, that's all Smile

But obviously my opinion is tainted because of the french meaning

Nbg · 06/05/2006 21:52

I suppose it's quite a girly meaning.

OP posts:
Squarer · 06/05/2006 21:55

Only if he goes to France though Nbg. (The same as a French person coming over here and introducing themselves as "Gorgeous" (Not entirely inconceivable!)
Problem being if you are Francophiles then. Smile

Nbg · 06/05/2006 22:02

Does everyone look at meanings for names then?

I never bother!

OP posts:
Frenchgirl · 06/05/2006 22:05

I looked at dd's name's meaning, out of curiosity (it's not an unusual name though)
I think it's just nice to know

Nbg · 06/05/2006 22:07

Maybe we should learn by our mistake.

DD's name means gift from Matthew.
BIL is called Matthew Blush

I think that Frenchgirl was suggesting that it's less of the traditional meaning of the name, more the direct translation in this instance.
FWIW I quite like the name Smile

Frenchgirl · 06/05/2006 22:08

lol Nbg

Squarer · 06/05/2006 22:13

\link{http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of_Beau.html\here you go}
76% of people rate this name "good" or above, so your DS would be statistically unlikely to have tea spat all over him every time he introduces himself. Wish same could be said for my DS Grin

Nbg · 06/05/2006 22:15

I actually thought everyone would hate it!
