Birth Registration people can't find any trace of my step-daughter??!!

I've just tried to get a duplicate birth certificate for my dsd and they can't find any trace of her. I've got everything right - date of birth, parents names, place of birth, mother's maiden name - but they can't find her! The lady I spoke to was really nice, she's been doing the job for years so knows what she's doing, she was as puzzled as I am

Can anyone think of a reasonable explanation? I can't.....

Looks like she wasn't actually registered then. Has she got a passport? You'd need to have one to get one, IYSWIM.

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:30

tissy I'm sure she must have a passport because DP took her on holiday 2 years ago - I'm sure the 'own passport' law was in then?

I really am totally baffled

are you anywhere near where she was born? Could you go along and ask to see the register?

I'm wondering if maybe records have been transferred manually onto a computer database, and someone has turned over 2 pages together, or something!

PrettyCandles · 05/05/2006 13:35

Could it be that whoever registered her birth made some miistakes?

She must have been registered in some way, as if she hadn't been then there wouldn't be any Child Benefit for her.

Couldn't the Registrar at the Office where she should have been registered help you?

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:39

It'd be difficult to go down there because we both work full-time

I think there must be some mistake of some kind by someone. The lady I spoke to said she had tried 2 years either side of the date of birth I gave her but still nothing. And she had searched purely on her mum's maiden name just in case but again nothing

The more I think about it the more puzzled I'm getting

Have you actually seen a copy of her birth certificate? Have you asked your dp about this?

charliecat · 05/05/2006 13:40

has you sd got the orignal birth certificate? Is there a ref number on it?

Caligula · 05/05/2006 13:41

You have to register a child by law, and as pc says there wouldn't have been any child benefit otherwise. She wasn't registered abroad, was she?

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:44

I've never seen a copy, DP can't remember whether he ever has or not (!)

The original is, we assume, with her mum - no way is she going to hand it over

No she definitely wasn't registered abroad, they've always lived in the same area

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm how odd.
Did your bloke register the birth with the mum?
If so can they look under his name?

Rhubarb · 05/05/2006 13:49

I hate to suggest this, but could there be a reason your dp hasn't seen the birth certificate?

throckenholt · 05/05/2006 13:51

if you go to the GRO website you can order it online and get them to do a search for you. It may be that it has somehow got misfiled at the local office but would be ok at the national one.

www.gro.gov.uk

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:51

They were married when she was born but the woman at the office said she had searched under the married name and her mum's maiden name

rhubarb I was thinking that too......

DP can't remember if he went to register her or not and doesn't recall any conversations with her mum about registering her so he's no help at all unfortunately

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 05/05/2006 13:52

So who organised the last passport and her child benefit and so on?

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:55

Ooohh thank you throckenholt - just phoned them they're going to process the application. I told them what my local office had said and they said someone would ring me if there was a problem. Thanks again Smile

rhubard her mum has always done everything, DP hates paperwork and never does any

Hope there is nothing suspicious in it! We must have very cynical minds eh????

Good luck!

NoPearls · 05/05/2006 13:58

I have a subscription to ancestry which lets you search for registered births up to 2004. Let me know if you'd like me to have a look!

NotActuallyAMum · 05/05/2006 13:59

lol rhubard, yes we must Grin

NoPears that's really kind of you, can I CAT you with her details?

Off for lunch now, back on just after half past....

OP posts:
NoPearls · 05/05/2006 14:06

I'm not signed up for CATs, but you can email me at no.pearls @ tesco.net

throckenholt · 05/05/2006 14:07

I thought ancestry wnet up to 2004 - but when I checked I could only find up to 1983 - odd.

I was going to suggest that as an option - but then thought the GRO was the only other choice.

throckenholt · 05/05/2006 14:10

just tried again - via the search option and it has all 3 of mine - so that would be another way to check if it is in the indexes.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2006 14:10

Are you certain she was registered in the area they are living in? Don't youhave to register according to place of birth?

throckenholt · 05/05/2006 14:11

try www.ancestry.co.uk/search/ and fill in the name, year and county.

NoPearls · 05/05/2006 14:17

I just logged out of ancestry and searched for DD and she appeared, but you don't get to see much detail about where she was registered and you don't get the mother's maiden name.

They keep messing around with ancestry - the recent BMDs are there, but they are tucked away on one line at the bottom of the page where you can search pre-1983.

throckenholt · 05/05/2006 14:20

i just looked up my kids - it gave my maiden surname and the registration index nnumbers - so that should be all you need to order the certificate from the gro.
