What's your secondhand threshold?

Was having coffee with some friends today, and mentioned that I had bought some nice stuff for DD on Ebay. Also said that I would lend a pg friend a BF nightshirt for her hospital stay (i was in for 4 days and only had 2 - DH had to acquaint himself with the washing machine rather quickly!!) and she looked really uncomfortable! Eventually said she would rather buy new ones, even though all there said that BF ones were a hospital use only item. A friend suggested lending her a breast pump and she looked mortified!

So what do / did / would you use second hand? And would it make a difference if it was from a friend or from Ebay / charity shop etc?

I have bought from Ebay and used:

Nursing bras
Maternity clothes
Baby clothes

Would never buy but would use from a friend:

Swimming costume
Breast pump

Would only have new:

Knickers (completely illogical in view of the swimming costume thing!)

What are your views? Just being nosey really Smile

Anything that touches my foof that isn't human must have never touched a foof before!!!

Apart from that I'm easy.

expatinscotland · 27/04/2006 20:11

underwear of any sort or swimming costume. bedding or beds - bedbug potential. everything else i'm pretty much game for.

PiccadillyCircus · 27/04/2006 20:13

From ebay:

Maternity clothes
Bras
Baby clothes
Swimming costume
Breast Pump

Would only have new

Knickers and Socks.

I think my standards are fairly low really Smile.

Would only have new

Knickers
Bra
Any underwear actually
breast pump
swimmng costume

charity shop

nothing - gosh that;s awful isn't it? I sound like a right snob - maybe I am!!! :O

SenoraPostrophe · 27/04/2006 20:15

oh people who are snobby about using second hand stuff get right up my nose.

fastasleep - foof? really?

gigglinggoblin · 27/04/2006 20:15

anything involving bodily fluids is out - so that include breast pumps, nursing bras etc. maternity clothes were fine second hand, but couldnt wear second hand knickers or swim suit (bodily fluid potential).

anything that will go in babies mouth has to be well washed, so toys are fine if they can be scrubbed or shoved in washing machine, otherwise no

ebay/charity shop/friend all the same

SenoraPostrophe · 27/04/2006 20:16

why is ebay better than a charity shop? because people don't see you shopping?

Wembley · 27/04/2006 20:16

I've just realised that I might be one of those people senora!! Blush

SenoraPostrophe · 27/04/2006 20:17

sorry - didn't say. don't have a threshold. would probably buy second hand pants if people sold them. as long as they're clean.

(a friend of mine used to try on pants in shops and then walk out with them having put her old ones back on the hangar. beware!)

LeahE · 27/04/2006 20:17

Probably wouldn't buy second-hand knickers, but pretty much anything else is fair game. A lot of DS's nappies are second hand too (cloth, obviously -- second hand disposables might be a step too far Grin)

fastasleep · 27/04/2006 20:17

I only call it a foof on MN!!

Must of the time I say it I call it a c*nt, bloody chatline work.

JanH · 27/04/2006 20:18

No second-hand underwear but anything else would be fine.

expatinscotland · 27/04/2006 20:19

Ebay is a crock.

But I flogged all my maternity clothes and good baby clothes in a car boot sale and made a tidy sum - to pay for DDs Tumble Tots for summer term AND buy her a pair of shoes. :)

Nothing wrong at all w/secondhand stuff. Except underwear, swim costumes, bedbug infested mattresses and bedding. :o

I got an Ameda Lactaline pump that was BARELY used for £20. SCORE!

LeahE · 27/04/2006 20:20

These days ebay tends to be better than a charity shop because the nice stuff that people used to give to charity often gets sold on ebay instead. Result is that there's virtually never anything good in the charity shops near me -- I do look and have bought things there but only a handful of items. I do have friends elsewhere who have really good charity shops in their areas, though, so I suppose it must be a regional thing.

FrannyandZooey · 27/04/2006 20:22

Yes I draw the line at knickers and sex toys. Have bought nursing bras from eBay.

I have had a second hand mattress. I would be fine with a breast pump if sterilised.

Would not have second hand shoes for ds but otherwise often get him things from eBay. I have bought second hand shoes for myself.

Wembley · 27/04/2006 20:26

Good question senora - don't know the answer really, looking in the charity shop windows they just seem full clutter - and I don't want it, doesn't really draw me in! [whisper] and sometimes they smell a bit!! Blush I guess ebay is just more convenient and doesn't smell!!! Grin- the real answer is I don't know just answering the original question. We all have our little quirks - don't we????!!! Grin

swedishmum · 27/04/2006 20:28

Shared pregnancy/ baby stuff with a couple of other friends. It's probably still doing the rounds. I know 1st highchair is now in France 12 years later! Nightshirts for hospital were given - chucked them out afterwards anyway. Did buy my own knickers - hospital ones were cheapest and probably biggest from asda or matalan.

expatinscotland · 27/04/2006 20:28

I don't buy used shoes for DD1, b/c she was very late to walk and has a narrow, hard to fit foot -C width.

MadamePlatypus · 27/04/2006 20:30

Wow! People with no ulterior motives get rid of their underwear before it is grey and falling apart and sell it on e-bay?

expatinscotland · 27/04/2006 20:32

Old underwear make great rags for cleaning.

Northerner · 27/04/2006 20:35

No second hand undies

fullmoonfish · 27/04/2006 20:42

like most others on here, no undies/swimwear etc. Bit funny about shoes too for some reason. Other than that we are second-hand champs! Really pisses me off when people are snobby about it! I have a friend who is always exclaiming how wondeful my clothes are(many of which are charity shops/ebay or donated by friends) but wrinkles her nose when I say it's second hand. Now, she is always complaining about being hard up but will not contemplate buying 2nd hand for her or her kids. Don't understand it if you're hard up. Also, I hate waste!

Wembley · 27/04/2006 20:50

Oh no I'm not gonna make any friends on here tonight! I might just get my (not so secondhand ) coat!!!! Blush

expatinscotland · 27/04/2006 20:55

Any lentil-weaving status you may once have held has now been permanently revoked, Wembley. :o

singalonga · 27/04/2006 20:56

Franny, PMSL at sex toys! Do they sell them on ebay? I think my comfort zones wouldn't extend that far (whose would ???? Grin)
