What's your secondhand threshold?

Was having coffee with some friends today, and mentioned that I had bought some nice stuff for DD on Ebay. Also said that I would lend a pg friend a BF nightshirt for her hospital stay (i was in for 4 days and only had 2 - DH had to acquaint himself with the washing machine rather quickly!!) and she looked really uncomfortable! Eventually said she would rather buy new ones, even though all there said that BF ones were a hospital use only item. A friend suggested lending her a breast pump and she looked mortified!

So what do / did / would you use second hand? And would it make a difference if it was from a friend or from Ebay / charity shop etc?

I have bought from Ebay and used:

Nursing bras
Maternity clothes
Baby clothes

Would never buy but would use from a friend:

Swimming costume
Breast pump

Would only have new:

Knickers (completely illogical in view of the swimming costume thing!)

What are your views? Just being nosey really Smile

i dont buy second hand anything, i do buy stuff off ebay but its new stuff, i do accept stuff off a very close mate for my dd though, and i would give/accept clothes for myself off my best mate. suppose i just like to know where our clothes have been Grin

no second hand undies, or personal items. no seconds hand kids shoes either. i love ebay, car boot sales and charity shops. sometimes when i am almost broke we go round charity shops only (loads here) just to have a rummage.

Forgot to add that shoes have to be new, I don't like the idea of them having moulded to the shape of someone elses foot first, I've also heard that it's not good for growing feet.

Cappucino · 30/04/2006 12:04

isn't the reason people think ebay is a real bargain and a charity shop is not partly to do with the the bidding system making us think the item is worth something? If people give something away to a charity shop do we think it's less of a bargain because they didn't receive anything for it?

that's one of my theories...

When I was expecting my first, I wouldn't accept second hand stuff. However since having had my second, I'd accept most things. Not underwear, shoes or breastpumps though

nutcracker · 30/04/2006 13:00

I will buy most things secnod hand, especially clothes for the kids.

Won't buy second hand underwear or swimming stuff though for me or the kids.

probably shoes and def. not underwear.

GreenSleeves · 30/04/2006 19:31

anything other than pants Grin

mistressmiggins · 30/04/2006 20:22

My SIL & I shared breast pump and maternity nightshirt - we were lucky not to have kids at same time so just swapped.
She got the breast pump off her friend - cant see the problem with that - you have to sterilise it b4 use

think only thing I wouldnt wear 2nd hand is kinckers

but my kids wear ANYTHING 2nd hand

edam · 30/04/2006 20:27

No undies, no shoes, nothing involving bodily fluids like breast pumps.

Shoes v. bad idea because of moulding to the wearer's foot. Especially for children with growing feet. Don't do it!

threebob · 30/04/2006 20:28

New bras and undies - I like bras to become (my shape)
New shoes
New breast pump
New cot mattress
New car seat
New Grobag
I have sold all of these now on Ebay - I know other people's thresholds are different to mine.

Now I have friends with babies I would probably accept a loan of more or less anything from this list apart from the shoes.

Second hand clothing for ds
Second hand toys

expatinscotland · 30/04/2006 20:33

I was selling in a car boot sale today w/a pal. And she flogged a pair of boots she'd bought on Ebay - that smelled like pongy foot.

Yuk.

Used shoes.
