What have you done with your wedding dress?

Just wondering about this - came across my wedding dress in a drawer the other day and not sure what to do with it - am a bit obsessed with getting rid of old clothes that don't fit (I am currently acting like a collision between the fly lady and Dawna 'dejunk your life' Walters)

Given I am never likely to wear it again (current social life and figure means floor length backless red velvet sheath and wrap not in too much demand), should I preserve it somehow, give it away, leave it for my DD to dress up in later life (or DS is he comes over all Lily Savage).

I am very happily married and dress has some great memories but it does seem mad to keep something I will never wear again... or maybe I should wear it once a year to remind husband of the day (or the fact I used to be slim - might get a bit ugly given post DD baby lard covered in velvet!)

Have you all kept yours - I wonder what people do with those huge meringues - how could you store something that size?

That reminds me I have my shoes too. When am I ever going to wear a pair of ivory shoes again? Maybe I should dye them.

Mine's in the wardrobe with clothes. Since it's not wrapped up there are muddy paw prints on the trail and clawk marks. Did try to get into it just after ds was born nearly 9 years ago and couldn't do zip up. (Something about ribs stretching after childbirth and never going back sil says), that's my excuse. Keeping it aswell as can't bear to part with it, sad person.

Many lovely wedding day memories. Mines stuffed in a suitcase in the loft. I was a size 6, 4 yrs ago, now double the size so dont think I will attempt to get it on!!!. I just can't part with it, I felt the most amazing I have ever felt in my life in that dress it was like a fairy tale. I felt glamourous and elegant.

My wedding dress is hanging in my wardrobe. It was actually a bridesmaid dress that I wore when my friend got married. Since it was so expensive I said that when I got married I would wear it, so I did, I got married 2 years later. Periwinkle blue empire dress, It's lovely I wouldn't part with it, maybe dd will play with it when she's older or wear it somewhere. It's the type of dress you could probably wear again if you had occasion to.

Mine (12 and a bit years old) is still hanging in wedding dress bag in wardrobe. And then I wonder why I have no space. Made the mistake of showing dd it and now everytime she dresses up as princess, I have to too.' Mummy wear your special dress too'. 'Well, I would if I could do up the zip darling.'

Mine's in a dress bag - I had it made for me in blue silk (sigh) - I love that dress. I have worn it several times since but only to Glyndebourne while pretending to be posh. Great fun to go somewhere like that and be dressed better than all the ghastly rich people (of whom I am certainly not one, either ghastly (I hope) or rich (I wish)!). Have been pregnant wearing it twice, though the second time, at 4 months, I couldn't breathe very well. Haven't worn it since and probably won't again, but can't imagine getting rid of it.

Mine's hanging in the bedroom in a wedding dress bag, been there for 13½ years, as have the Bride and Groom Teddy Bears that MIL had made for us.

Where do you get it professionally boxed and is it expensive? Mine is in a box in my bedroom - boxed by myself.

There are lots of websites regarding wedding dress storage - really interseting. Must get out more

bea · 17/01/2004 14:23

i had mine dry cleaned and then packed away in acid free tissue paper etc and then a posh box from the The wedding box company (if that's the right name... i forget)

but until then it was out and just hanging in a dress cover in the wardrobe for about 2 years... and i loved prancing around in it too! a la Northerner! (tiara and veil and all!!!), when dd was born i lost a fair bit of weight (i kid you not!!! it does happen!) and there's pics of me and dd messing around with it....

hmmm... it has been a while since i tried it on... but then again being 8 months preggers... i don;t think i'll stand much chance!!!

Our local dry cleaners, (Johnsons chain I think) clean them, wrap them in tissue paper and box them. Price is dependent on the value of the dress.
