What have you done with your wedding dress?

Just wondering about this - came across my wedding dress in a drawer the other day and not sure what to do with it - am a bit obsessed with getting rid of old clothes that don't fit (I am currently acting like a collision between the fly lady and Dawna 'dejunk your life' Walters)

Given I am never likely to wear it again (current social life and figure means floor length backless red velvet sheath and wrap not in too much demand), should I preserve it somehow, give it away, leave it for my DD to dress up in later life (or DS is he comes over all Lily Savage).

I am very happily married and dress has some great memories but it does seem mad to keep something I will never wear again... or maybe I should wear it once a year to remind husband of the day (or the fact I used to be slim - might get a bit ugly given post DD baby lard covered in velvet!)

Have you all kept yours - I wonder what people do with those huge meringues - how could you store something that size?

I stuffed mine into its original John Lewis box and bunged it in the loft. God knows what state it's in now, that was six years ago!

There was a thread, quite a while ago now, here maybe there are some more ideas there

Jaybee · 16/01/2004 12:19

I've still got mine ina suitcase in the loft - it was my intention to have it made into a christening robe for my dd but we never did get either of them Christened.

Northerner · 16/01/2004 12:19

Mine's at my Mum and Dads. Toying with the idea of selling it. Everytime I go to mums I get it out, put it on and prance around. Still makes me feel like a princess after nearly 6 years.

popsycal · 16/01/2004 12:20

mines in my wardrobe in a plastic cover...
only got married in july though

M2T · 16/01/2004 12:21

Mine is still hanging on my wardrope door! I haven't even put it in it's plastic cover. I am fully intending to have it Dry Cleaned and then put in the loft.

Hulababy · 16/01/2004 12:24

I have posted this once but it isn't here!!! It did that to me yesterday too - why???

Mine is on top of the wardrobe. It is in its dress bag and inside a suitcase, along with my head dress and viel. Was going to use it to make a christening gown but never got round to it; too late now. Not sure what to do with it really but not sure I could parrt with it - silly really. Not going to be wearing again after all; at last I got two wears of it at the time!

Northerner · 16/01/2004 12:26

I didn't even get mine cleaned. I remember lookimg into it and it was v expensive, so I didn't bother. My wedding day was wet and muddy too, and the bottom is all black.

Northerner · 16/01/2004 12:27

Just wanted to say how much I love weddings. I miss my wedding planning days.

Hulababy · 16/01/2004 12:28

I got mine dry cleaned when I got back from Kenya as it was covered in red dust at the bottom. It cam back the evening beofre my blessing. I know it has a dirty mark at the bottom still where DH stood on it! Not been cleaned again though - 5 years later.

M2T · 16/01/2004 12:29

GOD I don't Northerner!!! I fell out with my entire family including my DH2b as nobody would help me out!! I was so stressed I thought I would explode.

MancMum · 16/01/2004 12:29

Thanks for pointing out the other thread - makes interesting reading - I had never thought of making a dress out of it for DD - as we don't do religion, I had discounted the christening robe idea - but now I like the idea of getting DD a dress made for her first birthday out it - I could use the wrap for it and keep the dress and try to fit back into it for our wedding anniversaries - as it is quite OTT, might force DH into taking me somewhere posh!!

Mines in plastic hanging in the airing cupboard. I don't think it will ever be used again - made for me by my MIL in deep purple raw silk with diamante edging ( OK so far) but was for size 16, 5'11 and 7 months pregnant.....maybe I'll save it for DD

Mermaid2 · 16/01/2004 12:54

Mine is upstairs in our loft. It was in the spare room for about 2 years as I couldn't bring myself to put it away. I have such fond memories of wearing it and it did look beautiful. Will probably never wear it again. Maybe I will put it on for our DD to see.

eddm · 16/01/2004 12:57

I'd LOVE to wear mine again, second what Northerner said. Have this mad idea that one day I'll have a wedding-themed fancy dress party so we can all wear our outfits again - including DH who hired a Mr Darcy-like costume from theatrical company. Still makes me go goosebumpy at the memory. Actually something ruder than that but not suitable to post here!

Quackers · 16/01/2004 13:41

I had mine cleaned and preserved in a special chest. They wrap it in silk and fill it with a bust and tissue body!! Looks like there's a body in it when you open the chest!! It cost about £15 but was worth it as it looks so nice in there! Doubt I'll ever get in it again!

Quackers · 16/01/2004 13:41

Woops that was £150 not £15 - (wish it was)!!

fairydust · 16/01/2004 15:14

My mum brought me a fancy box from the dress makers when i had mine and it's at the back of the walldrobe - have put dd's dress in there to.

Mum2Ela · 16/01/2004 15:33

I got married last July and want to sell mine. I put it on confetti.com but no-one wanted it. And it is beautiful . .

So if anyone knows anyone who is a size 10 - 12 on top and an 8 - 10 on bottom, and who wants a Maggie Sottero dress . . sorry, am I allowed to advertise on here?

SoupDragon · 16/01/2004 15:44

Mines in a dress bag in the wardrobe. I'm going to keep it since it is my ambition to be able to fit into it on every anniversary (or at least know that I can, I haven't actually tried it on the last couple of years). I've managed it on each of the 6 years so far! Twice I've not been able to do the zip up over my breasteeding though bust

WSM · 16/01/2004 16:04

Mine is in my ardrobe in a dress bag, not all that surprising as I only got married last July

Mum2Ela · 16/01/2004 16:05

WSM - what date in July? Mine was the 18th, and it pissed down . . until after the photos, and the sun came out (but photos inside )

WSM · 16/01/2004 16:07

26th, the week after you (my DD is also Ella !). The weather held out until the very end of the photos but it just meant that we didn;t get every shot we wanted.

Kayleigh · 16/01/2004 17:14

I had mine dyed and have worn it about 4 times since my wedding 11 years ago. I LOVE wearing it.
My wedding was registry office and dress was ivory and ballerina length. It now looks beautiful in a deep royal blue. Had my shoes dyed to match too !
