Do you think it's necessary for your kid's names to "match"?

Was thinking about this earlier as there was a poster the other day wanting a flower name for her second dd to go with her dd1's flower name. I thought ... hmmm, then realised that my kids' names "match" in the sense that they are all gaelic!

And I once knew a woman with three girls called Sharon, Tracy and Clarissa, which I thought was a little strange ...

However your siblings are only with you on a daily basis during your childhood, and for the most part of your life you will not be living with reference to them ... so how necessary is it really?

Just interested in your thoughts ...

No I don't think names should match. My ds' name ends in a 'y' and i'm desperate not to name the new baby anything ending in a 'y' as think it will sound a bit silly. Like calling them Andy and Mandy Grin

moondog · 25/04/2006 18:42

I think you should get out more. Grin

I don't think they should but many times do, for the simple fact that people just have a predilection for particular sounds which is represented in the names they choose. The name I like best (away of DS's name) is different to DS's by just two letters but it sounds pretty much the same.

I wanted Thea And Theo but alas, DH didn't like it so went for Theo and Sophia which mattches perfectly.. if I have a third what will I dooooo?!

Chandra · 25/04/2006 18:43

Talking about matching names, somebody mentioned long time ago about having a Christoper & a Robin. The more I treid to forget the reference the more Winnie Poo came to my mind...

JoolsToo · 25/04/2006 18:44

my personal preference if for completely different names - no naming after parents and no same initial

Miaou · 25/04/2006 18:45

I was waiting for someone to say that moondog Grin

OUr son has a Scottish name and that makes me want number 2 to do too, but who knows if we'll ever decide on one...

moondog · 25/04/2006 18:48

Ignore me Miaou Grin
(I think you should just call your kids names you like.I think using names from other cultures to one's own is deeply deeply suspect.)

Elf1981 · 25/04/2006 18:49

my neice and nephew are Hollie and Ollie.
I know two sisters called Faith and Hope.
Also Lily and Rose.

I think I have more of a tolerance for "theme" names (flowers etc) than for names that sound the same.

compo · 25/04/2006 18:50

Shock Elf. just can't understand why people would do that!!!

motherinferior · 25/04/2006 18:55

I do sort of think they sort of should Blush. Both of mine have Biblical names. And so do my sister's two. My father says he feels like Abou ben Adhem, with this trail of Jewish monikers around his knees.

We're many things but not Jewish.

welshboris · 25/04/2006 18:56

i know families of

Jordana and Janaya
Chase, Chance and Chardonnay
Amber and Ebony

wanderingstar · 25/04/2006 18:57

My children's names don't "match" in any way at all, except they're all fairly classic names, ie. I'm happy to tell you dd's name isn't Chardonnay, and the 3 dss aren't Trey, Troy and Travis.

blueteddy · 25/04/2006 18:58

Both my DS's have little old Grandad names, but that was because I liked both names, not because I wanted their names to match.

There is kind of a theme though Lockets, in that they are all classy names, no chaviness or really popular choices

roisin · 25/04/2006 19:03

One of our reasons for choosing ds2's name was that it matched ds1: they are both Irish names. We have no Irish blood, but we wanted names with some link. They don't alliterate or rhyme or anything though!

Elf1981 · 25/04/2006 19:04

It is very traditional to name children in themes. So Victorian families (hmm, shall have to consult my baby book to make sure on this, could be another era!) would have for eg all flower names (Rose, Lily, Poppy, Daisy) or stone names (Pearl, Ruby, erm, my precious stone knowledge escapes me now)

I still grin at Hollie and Ollie.
My DD is Evelyn. If we have a ds in the future we will call him Lewis, if we have another dd, I like Evangeline but it is too much like Evelyn for my liking. I also like Freya but it wont go with my surname!

I also know a girl call Amber Jade, and I really wondered why the mum didnt use Scarlet Amber Jade or Traffic Lights. Lovely names by themselves, not too great mixed together!

MamaG · 25/04/2006 19:08

I didnt want mine to match exactly, although both are quite "old" names that sound nice together (DD and DS). When I thought of names, I thought of what would sound nice when I said DD and...

I have a friend who has 2 dds - Daniela Carmela and Isabella Maria. their surname ends in "a" too!

Hazellnut · 25/04/2006 19:11

I used to know someone called Antonia whose brother was called Anthony !!

tamum · 25/04/2006 19:12

:o at Hollie and Ollie (the next one could be Wally, eh), and I love Sharon Tracy and Clarissa!! Mine are similar sounding in a way, I suppose, although dd's full name is Welsh and ds's isn't.

cece · 25/04/2006 19:15

Iwanted DS to be Wesley but doesn't really go with Esme!

I know a family with an Esmerald and a sister called Esmeralda.

Tutter · 25/04/2006 19:15

Sam and Ella

I think my daughter's names match - same sort of feel to them. The Beckham's names don't match.
