Does anyone remember the Peter and Susan ladybird books - I'm probably showing my age here. Peter and Susan used to travel all over the world on BOAC (definitely showing my age). I remember when I went on a plane for the first time (aged 9 to Benidorm) being most put out when I wasn't invited to meet the pilots and for a guided tour of the cockpit because this always happened to Peter and Susan.

popsycal · 15/01/2004 20:35

wasn't it peter and jane though...?

It might well have been, popsycal, the old memory's not what it once was. Will have to hunt them all out next time I'm down at my mums.

Kittypickle · 15/01/2004 21:04

I think Susan and Peter were before Peter and Jane. They still sell Peter and Jane, I found them in Ottakars recently. Bought back loads of memories.

suzywong · 15/01/2004 21:25

tabitha my mum collected them all too. All the fairytale ones including Cinderall in that pink dress with the rosebuds on the bodice... mmmm.

Just scrolled down and found your Tootles the Taxi post Pops

DH bought that for DS1 in a charity shop and it has been re-done with awful awful 80s simplistic illustraions. I find the rhymes really hard to read aloud as some of them aren't really rhymes. Love the one about Colin the cattle truck taking animals to the show - yeah right, more like abattoir.

28 notes for the original, blimey
DS1 adores it.

suzywong · 15/01/2004 21:29

Popsy go and look at her fabulous periwinkle blue ball gown and matching slippers
Prince Charming is a bit of a non-starter though.

Don't have that one in is edition

You really should see this edition it is a crying shame that they re-issued it with such non descript illustrations. Wish I had the original shown in your link.

Paula71 · 15/01/2004 22:27

I have the Cinderella one on my ds twins bulging bookcase, as well as my other books, some Ladybird all loved.

When I was little I used to defy my tomboy instincts by fantasising about the blue dress Cinders wore in the book but I hated the hair!

Paula71 · 15/01/2004 22:28

Meant to say does anyone remember Pat the dog, owned by said Ladybird children Peter and ?. Can't recall who the girl was as this is the only one I no longer have, loved it to death I think!

What a coincidence, my dd picked up "The Magic Porridge" at nursery today and I quickly read it to her before we had to go in - she really enjoyed it

tanzie · 15/01/2004 22:33

Tabitha (my DD's name!) - I remember Peter and Susan. They went on holiday to London, which I always thought was peculiar, until my mother pointed out that they might not actually live there, unlike us...duh!

We still have: Tiptoes the mischievous kitten, Five Little Kittens, Smoke and Fluff (what was it with cats?) and Downy Duckling. My two love them.

suzywong · 15/01/2004 22:36

Paula 71 me too about the blue dress, OMG it was to die for.

suedonim · 16/01/2004 12:46

Nostalgia, nostalgia! What a wonderful site, Popsycal, thank you. We have loads of Ladybird books, the traditional tales, the "Lost at the Fair' ones, nursery rhyme books, loads of "The Story of.." books, What to Look for... books, a bit of everything, really. I don't think I could bear to part with any, though. Having said which, I loathed Tootles the Taxi when ds was small. It got left outside and rained on and had to be thrown away. How sad.

Tabitha, I'm really pleased to see you mentioning the Peter and Susan books. I loved them but no one nowadays has heard of them. I was beginning to think they were a figment of my imagination!

popsycal · 16/01/2004 12:53

I too thought Peter and Jane were relics of the past until stepDD came home from Reception with 1A (How un PC) as her reading books. My Dad then sent down all the set from when we were kids including the "C" books where you did the exercises so that DD could read them too. Bit battered now, but still pride of place on their bookshelf.
