mine wasn't either!

starlover · 21/04/2006 18:58

i mean, they wiped him over in the delivery suite... but he wasn't washed

TheBlonde · 21/04/2006 18:58

seems perfectly normal to me
I don't think my DS got a wash until day 5

misdee · 21/04/2006 18:58

serena has a quick wash on day 3 i think it was, as she was sick on the formula they gave her. i did comb the dried gunk out of her hair tho lol.

DS1 still had clumps of my innards adhering to his head when he first came out of ICU after a week Grin

annh · 21/04/2006 19:00

I gave birth to ds2 in Amsterdam and they are not keen on bathing the babies for at least a day after they are born - but he was wiped down when he was born. Is that the kind of thing you mean? He was born on Sat evening and tbh, it was such a relief when he was given a bath on Monday morning, he looked so much cuter and smelled gorgeous! They also weren't keen to measure the length of the baby as the midwife said it wasn't necessary, and cruel to stretch a little baby out right after birth - which kind of made sense, I suppose. So no, I don't think it's really unusual - or mad!

SleepyJess · 21/04/2006 19:00

Newborns don't need washing straight away! And it's such a shame when they lose that lovely newborn smell. Nothing like it!

DS2 didn't get bathed 'til he was about 6 weeks old.. he was in Neonatal ICU so it was not on his list of priorities.

FastasleepInHerOwnBed · 21/04/2006 19:01

Greensleeves...innards Grin

georginarf · 21/04/2006 19:02

it's not unusual at all
don't think DD was washed for ages!
And if they're born with vernix on, it's good for their skin to leave it on isn't it?

misdee · 21/04/2006 19:03

yes vernix is very moisterising, i remember reading an article on a bunch of science guys trying to recreate it.

When I had ds it was 1.12 am so no bath at the hospital then. I was discharged at 11.00 am and the nursing asst who should of washed him hadn't as she was too busy chatting to everyone. She didn't seem to want to do ds as I was a second time mum and thought I should do him myself and I said I'll be doing him for the next 10 yrs ha ha and she didn't see the joke. Ds was bathed that evening so about 18 hours after birth. He had a bit of blood in his hair but apart from that he was dandy Grin

starlover · 21/04/2006 19:05

ds had a bath in hospital because he was the one they chose for the bathing demonstration as he was sooooo lovely! lol

Darciesmum · 21/04/2006 19:26

I left my dd for over a week before she had her first bath, i let the vernix soak into her skin!

CarolinaMooncup · 21/04/2006 19:30

don't they measure them curled up though annh (with a tape measure)?

saadia · 21/04/2006 19:32

ds2 wasn't washed until we came back from the hospital, he was 4 days old. I couldn't wait to get him in the bath, thought he would feel much better after a good clean.

Not weird. (Who is tomkat btw?)
My ds wasn't washed for at least 2 weeks.
Had a bit of blood in his hair that I left. Kept him all new and lovely.

fisil · 21/04/2006 19:58

Both of mine waited about a week for their first wash - and both were merconium babies!

beansprout · 21/04/2006 19:59

Tomkat is Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

Flamesparrow · 21/04/2006 20:02

DS wasn't washed until about a week old... I wiped a bit of blood out of his hair on day 3 so that DH's dad could see a bloodless head (I wanted to know exactly what was wrong with it staying there... Grin), but no proper washing for ages.

hoxtonchick · 21/04/2006 20:03

did they do the separation thing that was threatened?

Peachyclair · 21/04/2006 20:56

The hospital bathed ds2 and ds3 (I had to have ashow bath with ds1 before I was released Sad) whilst I was in the bath, but i wished they hadn't- it's lovely not to, and vernix is so good and moisturising- why waste it?? hmmm?

lanismum · 21/04/2006 21:01

the midwife put my dds head under a tap when she was about half an hour old Grin poor little thing................

I feel SO sorry for Tom and Katie!Sad

Don't agree with alot of what i know (which is very little) about scientology but the parts about labour and Birth i thought were quite nice. She didn't have to be quiet but the staff did, not washing the baby. I think that's nice.
I really feel sorry though that every ascpect of their precious time is being trawled through the papers and ridiculed. Imagine how the poor girl must feel unless she's made of stone.

We all feel guilty anyway don't we, that poor Mum has no chance!
