Right so it is ok to steal someones paid for broadband connection because they were too stupid to secure it? Nice.

Pixiefish · 11/04/2006 20:14

For anyone with an unsecured wireless bb -It's dangerous not to secure your bb cos people can also hack into your hard drive.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 11/04/2006 20:14

OK now I have all the details, I am afraid I am shocked.

It may not be costing them anymore, but it does belong to them, they are paying for it.

Morally grey ??

More like morally bankrupt.Angry

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:15

We only live here few months of the year

So it won't be for very long Smile

And that makes it all right does it ??

Kanga I am truly shocked at you.

Callisto · 11/04/2006 20:16

Completely agree LadySherlock. And what an example to set your children fgs.

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:17

I am just using it for mumsnet

so I guess the moral part of it didn't occur to me BlushBlushBlush

I didn't think it would affect them

LadyTophamHatt · 11/04/2006 20:18

I'm not saying I disaggree with it, yes it's cheeky but fair play to you TBH but I could never do that.
I'd be as paranoid as hell that I'd be found out.

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:19

In my defence sir

I ought to say I don't actually know if it is a public one or a neighbour

as it just says NETGREAR on the connection

OP posts:
compo · 11/04/2006 20:21

That's how it's used in libraries over here too

busybusybee · 11/04/2006 20:21

I know in theory it is their responsibility to secure it but I still dont think it is ok to do this, even as a one off.

In fact my dh lost his job and vocation, and as a result our home because of something very similar to this happening to us

I agree with Sherlock

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:26

I am sorry Busybeebee Sad

I don't know what you mean, or how this can cause that

but I have been suitably told off and will turn off and go back to dial up

OP posts:
LadySherlockofLGJ · 11/04/2006 20:27

anchovies · 11/04/2006 20:33

Do you mind me asking how busybee? That sounds awful

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:37

.

I HAVE ONLY BEEN LOOKING AT HOUSE PRICE SITE

AND MUMSNET

AND SO I AM VERY SORRY

I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THE MORAL STUFF Blush

BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS A PUBLIC ONE FROM CAFE DOWN THE ROAD OR NEXT DOOR

WHY WOULDN'T SOMEONE SECURE THIER HOME NETWORK??????????

.

longwaytogo · 11/04/2006 20:52

RTKangaMummy · 11/04/2006 20:55

It came with the instructions with the router

If not phone up the provider and ask them to help you set it up

OP posts:
Pixiefish · 11/04/2006 20:56

hey RTKM don't be so down on yourself. It's silly of the other person not to be secure. It's legally wrong to hack into a system but you're not doing this are you. If they need the extra bandwidth and they can tell they're not getting it then they will just secure the broadband at some point in the future.

MeggLeVache · 11/04/2006 20:57

Yes when I visit a friend of mine and several family members and take my lap top - I was amazed the first time it happened - they should secure it.

anchovies · 11/04/2006 20:57

I don't understand how anyone can manage to set up a wireless network (cos it's bloody difficult to start with!) then miss out the security bit? If you go to your router settings and select security or network key or whatever you can add a password. It is also possible to set it up so it is not possible for your router to assign multiple IP addresses for extra security.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/04/2006 20:57

Because alot of people dont know kanga.

Its like with blue tooth too. Switched my phone to bluetooth yesterday and picked up next doors mobile phone.

Dave the rave he calls his phone lolololololololololollolololololollolol.

Back to the serious bit though. It is theft and if you are found out you could be in a lot of trouble. I wouldnt do, and DP although he would know how to wouldnt do it. (Although i suspect that it would be for our own network security reasons that he wouldnt do it....Shock)

Pixiefish · 11/04/2006 20:59

It's only theft if you get round someone's encryption. It's int he same league as finding a pound ont he road and keeping it
