I was born in Scotland, but now live in England because of my dh's job. If you don't live where you were born, what was the reason for your move?

live near it, but would never go back or want my children brought up there.

sweetkitty · 10/04/2006 15:48

Moved away from my hometown aged 20 to escape my mother, moved into grotty flat with DP, then I moved to a town in Cambridgeshire due to work stayed there 3 years before escaping to London for 4 years, returned to Scotland 7 months ago whilst pregnant with DD2 mainly due to house prices in the SE. The town I am in now is OK picked it due to DP's work.

I grew up In Redcar in Teesside. Moved to Harrogate when I was 19. Parents and family still in Teesside.

Bit of a dump, wouldn't move back. Still love it though. Roots and all that IYKWIM!

SenoraPostrophe · 10/04/2006 16:03

actually I would quite like to move back to my home town, but dh would rather stick hot needles in his eyes. it's not the greatest of towns but I do miss people knowing me etc. It wouldn't be the same if I moved back though because none of my family live there any more.

kipper22 · 10/04/2006 16:32

Fimbo, I know how you feel about wanting to be near family.

I was born in Dagenham (Essex but more a grotty London Borough!), went to Uni in Bath where I met DH (who's from Exeter). Both applied for jobs anywhere in the south and ended up here in a village outside Canterbury! Have no intention of staying here - ideally would love to live in Bath if I was rich enough - but hate living an hour from my parents now so 3 hours would be terrible! Planning to move in next couple of years so I need to decide by then!

BagelBird · 10/04/2006 16:36

I live near my home village. Too expensive to live there now. Bad enough in our 10 mins drive away village and is slightly cheaper. TBH not sure I would want my parents within walking distance - a short drive is fine and means twice weekly visits rather than every day.

LadyTophamHatt · 10/04/2006 16:43

Moved from Basingstoke(Hampshire) to Carshalton (Surrey) 8 yrs ago to live with DH (then DP).

Now in East Sussex.

i was born and brought up in hull.have moved around constantly since i was 17,am settled now in wales, but get extremely homesick for hull and pattie butties!!!!(oh,and curd cheese cakes, breadcakes, stotties, proper meat paste, and custard pies!!)

Niddlynono · 10/04/2006 16:48

I was born in Berkshire but moved to London about 10 years ago when I started working (in the music biz which is very London-focused). We're hoping to move back to Berkshire at some point, mainly to be nearer my parents who are doting grand-parents. DH works long hours/weeks and with our second child due in the summer I would really like to be closer to my family. I never thought I'd want to go back but now I've got a family it's all changed. Unfortunately this particular part of Berkshire is said to be the most expensive place to live in the UK so we may have to settle for somewhere nearby.

foundintranslation · 10/04/2006 16:52

No. Because I have no, absolutely no connection to it that's worth having.
Sad but true.

buffythenappyslayer · 10/04/2006 16:54

i often think about moving back to hull because all my friends and family are there.but the hospital here is far much better than hull royal,so think thats my main reason for not going back!

brimfull · 10/04/2006 16:55

born in Newton Mearns,Glasgow, moved to Canada, then moved to uk.Think of Canadian town as my hometown as family all there.

wilbur · 10/04/2006 16:55

I was born in New York, but only lived there as a baby. Not sure I would want to live there now, although I have lived there briefly as a student and it was fab. I grew up in a town that is now full of Chelsea footballers as their training ground moved there - it's nice but I would feel weird living there now even if we could afford one of the McMansions that are being built all over the place.

SaintGeorge · 10/04/2006 16:59

not sure I know where my home town would be - born in Scotland, moved to Loughborough, then to Peterlee and around that area, then down to Hampshire, back up to Scotland, Paris for a bit, Scotland again, Hampshire again, then down to London and out to surrey.

SaintGeorge · 10/04/2006 17:09
