Do You Live In Your Home Town? If Not, Why Not?

I was born in Scotland, but now live in England because of my dh's job. If you don't live where you were born, what was the reason for your move?

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 10/04/2006 13:45

no
because I legged it out of there as fast as my teenage legs could carry me Grin
sooooo many reasons: small town, post industrial wasteland, no work, everyone knew me and my family, incredibly narrow horizons...

Tinker · 10/04/2006 13:45

No. Work.

MrsBadger · 10/04/2006 13:47

Not any more but did for a while - also had a few circuitous-family-history years!
Born in NE London, came back to E London with DH after university, ended up living 200 yards from where his grandather was born (despite the fact his family are all Welsh), and our local Barclays was the one my grandmother was born over, but we couldn't afford to buy a shoebox and the area left a bit to be desired...
Then DH was headhunted and offered a job outside London just as my contract was ending, so we upped sticks at four weeks' notice and legged it to leafy Oxfordshire.

Never looked back - especially as it's handily halfway between my family in London and his in Wales, so neither are too near or too far!

Until this year, I've never lived in the same place for more than 2 years (now we've been here 3 years and will probably be here much longer as the kids have started school).

I always find it quite unusual when I hear people have lived in the same town their whole lives.

jamsam · 10/04/2006 13:52

twokids, i grew up near dorking...
live in wales now though.

ProfYaffle · 10/04/2006 13:53

I was born in Warrington, now live in Norfolk. I moved to live with dh. I miss family and friends up there but much prefer the lifestyle down here.

Nemo1977 · 10/04/2006 14:00

Both dh and I born in liverpool. Still live there well knowsley but a whole streets difference for the borderline of liverpool..lol

Nemo1977 · 10/04/2006 14:04

meant to add that I would live anywhere...not a big fan of liverpool but thats for personal reasons.

Is your home town where you were born, or where you lived most of your childhood, would you say?

I have lived in town (a), which is where I was born, for the past 9 months. I have never lived here before (parents used to live about 10 miles away), and spent most of my life living in town (b), 130 miles away. We moved to town (a) because of DH's work, it was a complete co-incidence that I was born here too.

So which is my home town, (a) or (b)?!

JoolsToo · 10/04/2006 14:33

i was born in Manchester and lived there until I was 24 - moved to Wigan because houses were cheaper - moved back to Manchester when I was 29/30 I think.

Moved to the Lake District in January 2004 - took early retirement - it's heaven!

tangerinecath · 10/04/2006 14:39

Born in Germany, to Scouse parents (another forces child). Lived all over the place as a kid, including Hong Kong which was fab. Parents settled in Blackpool on leaving the army when I was 15. Mum & Sister still there.

I consider Blackpool my home town although I couldn't wait to get away (I know this doesn't make sense, but there you have it!). Went to university in Sheffield aged 20 and lived there for a couple of years post graduation.

Moved by work to South Lincs six years ago, met dh (who is originally from York), married, had dd. Looks like we're settled here now, but missing city life and would love to go back up north nearer family. Don't consider Boston my home town at all.

Caligula · 10/04/2006 14:42

No because of house prices

Cam · 10/04/2006 14:46

Another RAF baby here, born in York, moved at 6 months old and have lived in lots of places, now live on South Coast

Enid · 10/04/2006 14:48

OMG

the idea of living in Hertford fills me with horror

PiccadillyCircus · 10/04/2006 14:55

Hertford is all right (although we moved a bit further north so we could afford to buy a house Smile)

JanH · 10/04/2006 15:31

Because I grew up in West Drayton Shock

JanH · 10/04/2006 15:32

(I think that trumps Hull and Barnsley Grin)

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2006 15:35

Erm, I grew up in Bognor Regis. We'll have no further talk of trumping after that one, I think Shock

NoPearls · 10/04/2006 15:36

F&Z I'm still there...

MissChief · 10/04/2006 15:36

I was born nearish Cinderford (thank God,not too near)- if anyone's ever been, they'd know it would trump anywhere !!

expatinscotland · 10/04/2006 15:37

No. I was born in a town that's probably hotter than Hell, full of crime and has traffic to rival anything London can produce. Houston, TX.

Left as soon as I could.

rummum · 10/04/2006 15:39

I moved to Reading when I was 6... I now live 2 minutes away from Mum and Dad in the house I grew up in..
A new neighbours followed me down the road today and she must have thought I was royalty... Grin The dustbin men waved to me... the man on his bike.. (a dad from school) and a friend who is a postman waved when I tooted him...

mazzystar · 10/04/2006 15:42

don't really have a home town. never lived anywhere very long when growing up. so i'm a born again scouser.

GDG · 10/04/2006 15:46

I live where I class is my 'home town' - it's not the part of town where i was born but it's where I did most of my growing up and went to school. Have moved away and lived in both Leeds and London but feel totally at home here - it's a good place to bring children up (I think anyway) because we are close to a major city with all it has to offer, not far from countryside either and we have fabulous schools too.
