I wish to pick your brains if I may.

Top client wants me to book dinner in a very nice restaurant in London. Only for 15 guests. Celebrating a recent financial sucess. Money no object. But he doesn't want anywher too 'ovbious' like The Ivy.

London is not my forte.

Ideas appreciated. TIA!

I'm probably too late but I would really recommend the Picasso Room upstairs at L'Escargot in Soho. And I'll second the Mirabelle - absolutely gorgeous place and fab food. Smith's is a great choice for a group though, especially if they've got some money to spend...

Lolas or Fredricks Islington

Club Gascon fantastic and not too spenny
Petrus fantastic and very spenny!

Smiths is by NO stretch of the imagination the best restaurant in London!!!

prufrock · 08/01/2004 19:58

no no no to Benyihana - service is terrible and food is completely overpriced for what you get. Mirabelle is lovely, Latium is a newish Italian which is really really good. Petrus -off Wilton place- is excellent, or L'oranger on St James'. (My dh lunches for aliving and these were his top 4)

Ramsay is FABULOUS.... (IMO trhe bets restaurant in London - and I have done many....) the one in Chelsea and it is also small (so maybe 15 would be a problem or maybe they have another room).

pupuce · 08/01/2004 20:46

L'escargot not posh enough (but pretends to be!).... Ramsay far classier - doesn't pretend.... just is.

moominmama86 · 09/01/2004 15:15

Perhaps I'm just easily impressed, pupuce...

pupuce · 09/01/2004 19:37

Maybe you need to try Ramsay to see what I mean Great excuse to go

Agree about Benihana, its the kind of place you'd take teenagers for a birthday. Also agree that Smiths is not in the top league by a longish way, their breakfast/brunch is fun but the food is overrated, IMHO IMHO IMHO!!!

moominmama86 · 09/01/2004 20:10

Pupuce, I really hope you're not intending to be as patronising as you sounded...

I don't 'need to try Ramsay'. I used to eat out for a living, as a restaurant reviewer. I just thought I'd make an alternative suggestion to the 'obvious', as Northerner requested. (Although, if you're talking about the downstairs room at L'E, I would go along with you to some extent.)

Sorry, I'm aware this sounds rather touchy, it's not a big deal, and I know tone is hard to judge online, but I don't think I need educating, ta very much

Forgot, there's this place called Michael Moore nr Baker St/Regents Park. Great reviews and I think I saw his name on telly last week but I haven't tried it. I'm hoping to go to Le Manoir again for my birthday, lovely setting and good food although not rated by everyone I know and, of course, not any good for your purposes as its not in London.......doh!

pupuce · 09/01/2004 20:44

Patronising ??? me ????? That's why we have and o:

I never ate downstairs at L'E- only upstairs.... I am French and I think there are quite a few good restaurants in London but can't help but think GR is the best value for money and not pretentious.... which is nice. That's all...

moominmama86 · 10/01/2004 07:32

Fair enough

I completely agree with you about GR. I just like the other place too... No offence meant
