Anyone care to join me? Have started running again in earnest last week and this week have clocked up 17 miles. Was planning to make it up to 20 by running tomorrow but managed to bash knee on door frame when rushing to ds (who'd fallen off wall in garden) and it's so sore and swollen. TYPICAL! Would I be mad to try and do a little run on it tomorrow...?

Anyone else just starting ro run again/for first time?

im back at it after baby at xmas - and loving it! aimimng for 10k race in May - not clocking up very long runs at present as have to do some running with pram and use creche and gym at times. great time of year for runnig though. how often are you going?

rummum · 08/04/2006 19:51

I'm doing the tesco's 3 mile race for life in June... I've just found out I'm anaemic and I'm waiting for my iron levels to increase before starting running...
I've brought my running shoes £45 [gasp] and some tracky bottoms, so I'll be ready.. soon...

I'm also a volunteer for the moonwalk in may... I just hope they don't have me following the strugglers to incourage them on... the full 26 miles..[gulp]

dinny · 08/04/2006 19:55

Hello!

Rosylizzie, did a really nice 5-mile run today but had ds in buggy. Makes it much harder, doesn't it? Especially as there are no parks round here - it's either roads or bumpy narrow paths. I'm aiming for 4 runs a week. Going to try and do 17-25 miles each week (gulp)

Rummum, where is the Moonwalk? Have heard of it (I think)... Hope you get the go-ahead soon. Smile

ive managed 2 runs this w/e - a short but hard 2.5 miles along farm tracks and 4.5 miles on the flat with dd in buggy - that one was surprisingly good, dont know how much ill manage over easter hols with older 3 off school and then we are going to ireland for a week

leogaela · 11/04/2006 13:14

Well done Dinny. Its not so bad running with the buggy is it!

I did about 50 mins on Saturday and once during the week about the same - I guess that's about 10 miles.

Will try to go tonight and tomorrow lunch time. Need to find a race to train for.

Cookey · 19/04/2006 12:13

This is too lae for the original post, but DO NOT run if you are carrying a knee injury. Swelling indicates that something is not right; to run on it would be very foolish. Wait for the swelling to reduce, and for any pain to cease. Even then run only if you are totally happy. If necessary see your GP first.

Pidge · 20/04/2006 13:49

Hullo you all (and Leogaela, good to see you over here!!). I've been running twice a week since September, when I met a friend who was training for the New York marathon, and I realised that my excuse of not running due to babies and breastfeeding was a bit feeble!

I now do about 50 mins twice a week (about 10 miles), and very excitingly have just this morning signed up to do a 10k on May 6th. Have also just joined a running club, and plan to go out with them once a week. Would love to do one or two more runs a week, but would need the excuse of training for a proper race to persuade dp to do the extra childcare for me.

Long term plan is to do a half marathon in the autumn. Would love to try for the London marathon next year but know that only 1 in 5 people get a place, so unlikely to even get in.

leogaela · 22/04/2006 19:19

Hello Pidge, not getting into the London marathon is no excuse, there are plenty of other marathons you could do! Great that you are joining a running club.

I'm a bit inconsistent with my runnign at the moment, one week I run several times and the next not at all. Last Sunday I did a very hilly 1hr8 min run which has given me the confidence to commit to doing a 10K on the 1st May (but only if its not raining, if it is dh won't come and support me)!

Pidge · 23/04/2006 12:01

Leo - you're quite right! Just watching the London marathon at the moment and getting all inspired. Will see how I go with my 10k on May 6th, then think about an autumn half marathon.

leogaela · 25/04/2006 07:50

Pidge - if you are looking for an autumn marathon there is a really nice run here in October in Switzerland that I did and highly recommend, its 35K though slightly short of a marathon, its a small run which I like, great for a November marathon training run or instead of a marathon. Fantastic scenery, I have fond memories and will definitely do it again.

Pidge · 27/04/2006 09:09

Gosh Leogaela - that does look fun. My current plan is ... a couple of 10ks this summer, then a half marathon round about September, October time. I'll apply for the London marathon next year, and assuming I don't get a place (your chances first time round are pretty low), I'll look for another marathon in spring 2007ish.

Chatted to a friend last night who is not a runner, but has got all excited and decided to do the Great North Run this autumn. Seems everyone I know is getting their running shoes on!

Where did you do your marathon out of interest, was it the one you linked to?

leogaela · 27/04/2006 10:24

The marathon I did was the Ticino marathon (italian part of Switzerland). It wasn't a big marathon mostly serious runners (and me!) no fun runners so you miss out on that part of it and it wasn't a particularly scenic run either (unlike the Brienzerseelauf which is beautiful). I did the Brienzerseelauf (35K) as part of training for the Ticino marathon.

I was also signed up for Zurich marathon but got injured a couple of weeks before and couldn't run. It is in April so a great alternative to London Wink! I plan to do it sometime but probably not next year though.

Great, I hope your friend does start running :o!

Wembley · 27/04/2006 10:30

Wow can't beleive there's a running thread as I have just started running htis week .My DH is really into it and I would love to be but hate ie!!! He's starting me off nice an gentle with a small route and building me up. Have done 2 runs now this week and feeling very proud of myself. Grin Would love to run in a proper race at some point. Look forwad to getting lots of advice and encouragement off you all :)

Pidge · 27/04/2006 12:23

Wembley - good on you. When I re-started running in September (having run a bit years previously, but not since having two kids), I started at just 10 minutes, and gradually very gradually added 5 minutes here and there. Running twice a week, and building up slowly I can now do 8 miles. Amazing thinking back! And there comes a point after a few weeks when you start to feel really strong once you've been running for a while. Very exciting.

Pidge · 27/04/2006 12:25

Leo am I allowed to ask what time you did? I imagine you as a super speedy lean machine somehow!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 27/04/2006 12:27

Pidge - I agree about feeling strong later on in your run. Don't be put off that you feel crap after 15 or 20 minutes. I've been running for 7 years now and still feel like that....plod on a bit more and you often find you start to feel a little better Smile

Wembley - sign up for a Race for life near to you. All women and only 5k - it'll really motivate you to carry on.

Good luck. And you are welcome on the 'runners thread' under health you know. We aren't all at marathon standard!

leogaela · 27/04/2006 13:11

Well done Wembley! I agree, signing up for a race wil lbe really motivating and a lot of fun. I also think that if you are not enjoying running then you are pushing yourself too much, running is great, I find it relaxing, its the time that I really think through problems and then let my mind go free.

Saggybottomknickers - I think this thread was originally started for new, new runners and those coming back to it after a break.... I'm off to check out health runners thread now!

Pidge, I'm definitely not superspeedy or particularly lean, I am a plodder, but a very determined one - this is me! \link{http://www.datasport.com/myds/index.cfm?myds=Yes&lang=DE&db=e&p=1.1&fid=2&fRefNr=521841&fName=oren%20laura&fOrt=\Leo}

Pidge · 27/04/2006 13:24

Leo - I consider that pretty damn speedy! I knew you were a keen one Grin. I'm determined to get my speed up a bit (I'm around the 9-9.5 min mark over 8 miles), and have decided to bite the bullet and try to run up a few little hills and do some intervals, rather than pottering round my usual flattish route all the time.

Think running is strangely addictive once you get stuck in ...

chapsgotAtooth · 27/04/2006 21:53

dinny, can I join???
Have eight weeks to get skinny for wedding!!
Going out tommorow to see what I can do...
I HATE ROAD RUNNING!
and theres very little cross coutry city centre, amd going to do a rat race in july...Grin

Pidge · 01/05/2006 20:28

Hi chapsgotAtooth (great name). I'm a city road slogger as well. I'm developing quite a fondness for the pavements of S.E. London these days! The running does get better, honest.

I have a new regime - had been doing two runs a week, and have decided the only way to squeeze in a third is to go out pre 7am on a Friday morning, when I normally get a little lie in whilst dp deals with the kids. He reckons I'm mad. I managed it last Friday - just a little 3m jaunt, but up and down a rather large hill. Don't know if I'll keep it up, as I am a legendary slug-a-bed in the morning.

leogaela · 01/05/2006 20:51

well done Pidge for your early morning rising!

I did a 10K today, feeling very proud of myself :o! Will update tomorrow!

Pidge · 02/05/2006 16:09

Well done on your 10k leo - I've got mine coming up on Saturday, though I think it will be a slowish potter round, as it's a charity run, combined with a 5k, including lots of not so regular runners. Not that I'm intending on whizzing round at all. I hope I can do it in an hour, that's my plan.

I'm still quite impressed with my pre 7am start on Friday ... who knows if I'll ever manage it again!

leogaela · 09/05/2006 08:30

How was the 10K Pidge?

Pidge · 09/05/2006 13:22

Well, remembered Leo! Ooooh - it was very exciting. It was a VERY informal run. In fact most of the field started in front of the start line! I managed to do it in just under 52 minutes, which I was really, really pleased with. It was about 2-3 minutes faster than the best time I'd imagined I could do. So of course, now I want to do another one!!

In a fit of enthusiasm I have just entered the Windsor half marathon for late September. And I'd like to do a couple more 10ks before then.

Everyone else has gone very quiet ... anyone running out there!?
