How much do you have in savings?

Saw thread about spending more than £130 on yourself without consulting partner and it shocked me how much DH & I spend on luxuries compared to the rest of you. Him about £400 a week on betting, clothes, eating out and drinking, cabs, presents for me. Me about £100 a week mainly on dinner out, baby sitters and cabs. We are not particularly wealthy just that we spemd just about everything we earn, but we don't have any debts at all except the mortgage. We have a total of 12k in savings which would cover the mortgage for 6 months. If car needed new engine that would be £6K. So 12K not a massive amount. Maybe we should save more given we have 3 kids to support but DH loves to spend on himself and on me and tbh I'm not that worried as we both have good pensions, life assurance, critical health assurance etc. Also bro in law died aged 38 so we both kinds think enjoy life while you can. Is my attitude different to the rest of you? Do you save a proportion of your spare cash each month?

We don't spend as much as you, LasVegas, but then we don't earn as much as you.
But we both have reasonable salaries.
We only have ds.
We save £150 each month into isa for emergencies and £150 into account for holidays, new fridge - when needed etc etc.
We spend what we want , when we want, without having to ask eachother.
On sunday, I spent over £200 on clothes - and I haven't bought any clothes for nearly a year.
Dh encouraged me.
It all depends on your attitude and what your disposable income is - after mortgage etc, is it very tight ?
We consider ourselves to be, very laid back about money and yet very repectful to eachother - we never blow silly amounts on silly things.
Some people couldn't or wouldn't want to behave in the way that we do.

At £400 per week for him and £100 per week for you that's £26,000 per year.

Assuming that this comes out of taxed income you're talking about a salary of £35,000 to £40,000 each year spent on treating yourselves.

Each to their own. Enjoy.

You may not be particularly wealthy but you have a lot of disposable income compared to many people and you are doing your bit to keep the economy going by spending it. (That's the thought I always keep in mind when I'm spending money that I don't really need to).

omg

we dont have any savings

we put a large deposit down when we bought the house and so we have that if things were desperate

what we earn goes straight on bills and food (and we dont even have any credit cards or loans)

we save a little each week for special things like the dd's birthdays (about £5 a week)

Envy at you having all that spare cash lasvegas

handlemecarefully · 04/04/2006 13:29

You can't really make comparisons with other people. You can only save what you can spare; some people are fortunate to have a large disposable income and can save considerable amounts, others can't....

paolosgirl · 04/04/2006 13:30

£500 a week on yourselves???! Crikey - lucky you. We haven't really got savings as such for ourselves, but are insured up to the hilt, and have several thousand pounds in each of the kids names for uni fees etc. We also have a big mortgage. We don't bet or go out really, so I guess we're just spending our money on different things.

Bobalina · 04/04/2006 13:31

Dp and I haven't got a pot to p* in! I decided to be a SAHM and Dp earns a basic wage ( what you and your dp spend on non-essential goods). We have a mortgage, both run cars and have no other loans. We hardly have anything left over after bills etc are paid but of the little that is left over I make sure some is paid into dds 1 and 2 child trust funds and some into a savings fund. Our life is abit boring with no eating out etc. But I see it as a short term thing and knowing I have savings gives me security.

paolosgirl · 04/04/2006 13:31

Oh and I put away money each month into the kids bank accounts.

GDG · 04/04/2006 13:33

PARP!

katyp · 04/04/2006 13:34

LV, I think it is different strokes for different folks and hard to make comparisons. We don't save much per month now but do have some savings from when we earned more. We don't spend anywhere near the same amount as you do on ourselves, but that is because I am lucky to be able to be a sahm and I accept the financial sacrifices that go with that... (Dh is probably not so accepting!)

You probably have a lot more disposable income than many others here but I think I recall you saying on another thread that you can't/won't have a child with your dh, one of the reasons being the childcare costs. (I know it wasn't the only reason.) Also that you work full time and that is somehow linked to the amount of maintenance your dh pays to his ex...I am not judging your choices in any way, but I'm sure you can appreciate that the £500 you and your dh spend each week would go a long way to paying for another childcare place, or to covering the loss of income if you reduced your hours, so that is a choice you have made, ie to maintain a particular lifestyle.

We all have things we spend money on which others might not, be they small amounts or large amounts. That's what makes us all unique!

paolosgirl · 04/04/2006 13:36

Ah, it's a bit clearer now, Katy. Thanks.....

scienceteacher · 04/04/2006 13:38

We don't budget savings, but DH does buy shares at work that we cash in every few years when we want to do something on the house.

We pay school fees which means that we have very little 'fun money' - maybe in the order of £100 a month for the whole family, £40 of which will be blown tomorrow when I get my hair done. But I'd rather have it that way.

oliveoil · 04/04/2006 13:43

I don't like money threads tbh, they always go a bit peevish.
