How much do you have in savings?

Saw thread about spending more than £130 on yourself without consulting partner and it shocked me how much DH & I spend on luxuries compared to the rest of you. Him about £400 a week on betting, clothes, eating out and drinking, cabs, presents for me. Me about £100 a week mainly on dinner out, baby sitters and cabs. We are not particularly wealthy just that we spemd just about everything we earn, but we don't have any debts at all except the mortgage. We have a total of 12k in savings which would cover the mortgage for 6 months. If car needed new engine that would be £6K. So 12K not a massive amount. Maybe we should save more given we have 3 kids to support but DH loves to spend on himself and on me and tbh I'm not that worried as we both have good pensions, life assurance, critical health assurance etc. Also bro in law died aged 38 so we both kinds think enjoy life while you can. Is my attitude different to the rest of you? Do you save a proportion of your spare cash each month?

We are trying to save 10% of our mortgage a year to pay of our allowed lump sum each year. But obviously that gets less and less.

Out of interest LAsVegas what are your combined salaries (sorry being very nosey)

SenoraPostrophe · 04/04/2006 16:32

does spare capacity on your credit card count as savings?

lasvegas - Shock that you could not realise that spending on that level is unusual.

Lasvegas · 04/04/2006 16:34

I do emphathise with people who are unable to survive financially let alone save. I have been in this position and my intention was not to upset people. But surely mumsnet is a place where inequalities exist and are accepted. We don't all have the same. Some people have kids that sleep through some don't, some have partners that bath the kids every night others don't. Some people are healthy others are not.

i do feel you are bragging a bit actually lasvegas, but im not offended.

SenoraPostrophe · 04/04/2006 16:37

those of us who have kids who sleep through the night don't tend to start threads giving all the details of how and when they sleep through the night.

CHICagoMUM · 04/04/2006 16:37

Whilst I do agree with your last post LasVegas, surely you can see how, (precisely due to what you said in that last post) your original post can make some people feel you are rubbing their noses in it so to speak?

SenoraPostrophe · 04/04/2006 16:38

...but no, I'm not offended either. It's the threads where people own up to earning an enourmous amount of money and then whinge that it's not enough that piss me off. You're not doing that!

PS blimey, 6k for a new engine. would that be a fire engine you drive?

jmum6 · 04/04/2006 16:40

I'm not offended either, just interested in how the other half live.

oh come on you lot, if you can have threads about how poor you are then you can have threads about how wadded you are

All rather embarrasing and nouveau though Blush cringe

nailpolish · 04/04/2006 16:43

usually if someone has a thread about how poor they are its asking for advice on how to meal plan, pay off debts etc

and to respond to the first post, yes i have a 'live for today' attitude

you dont have to be willy-nilly with cash to have that attitude

zippitippitoes · 04/04/2006 16:43

as you have been quite open about finance..it would be interesting to know how you got from no money to more than you know what to do with via a lousy divorce settlement? Smile Cna anyone else do it?

EnidFord · 04/04/2006 16:43

we are f*cking minted though

CHICagoMUM · 04/04/2006 16:44

Yes,but the ones about how poor you are, are general asking for advice about the situation or just a rant ar how lousy your situation is. One commenting/bragging about your wealth (and I'm not saying that that is what is going on here before I get lept on) serves what purpose?

Lasvegas · 04/04/2006 16:49

Senora P - it is all relative. I have spent this week writting bonus cheques for my board of directors of £100K gross. I don't know any one else who has a house as small as mine. Yes I am well off compared to some but not so compared to others.

jmum6 - I don't mind you asking, in fact it is the first time I worked it out. Total take home pay for me and DH is £7,200 a month. £2,200 goes on mortgages and about £2,000 on childcare and maintenance.

But as stated before DH and I have separate finances. I spend £400 a month on luxuries. DH only comparator I had until I read other posts spends £1,600 on his luxuries. I cannot be held responsible for how he spends his money.

Tell you what, Lasvegas, you can incorporate ME into your savings miracles, but sending me a quid . . .

SenoraPostrophe · 04/04/2006 16:51

"...a house as small as mine..." now you're getting close to the moaning thing.

7k a month take home. double blimey.

CountessDracula · 04/04/2006 16:53

Does he have a coke habit?

CountessDracula · 04/04/2006 16:55

So you in fact spend £7200 a month
your £12k savings ain't gonna last long are they? Grin

nailpolish · 04/04/2006 16:56

i an going to have to parp this thread

Lasvegas · 04/04/2006 17:00

zippit - more controversy I am afraid. Was fortunate enough to get on property ladder more than a decade ago also my mother helped me stay a float when my salary was much less than it is now.

OP posts:
Northerner · 04/04/2006 17:06

Lasvegas says in her fist post 'we are not particularly wealthy'

F**k me, if earning over £7k a month take home pay is not wealthy then what is?

EnidFord · 04/04/2006 17:07

1600 on luxuries?

thems some impressive luxuries

zippitippitoes · 04/04/2006 17:08

to answer your question, my attitude to money is nothing like yours!

jmum6 · 04/04/2006 17:08

cor £7000+ a month!

Are you happy though? (sorry had to ask before anyone else did :o)
