Old Xmas Cards?

Any ideas on what we can do with old Xmas cards? My ds is 2 and I thought we could pass an hour or so doing something crafty! I can't remember what we used to do when i was young (it was so long ago )

Make gift tags for next year?

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:06

Thanks - northerner, I did think of that but wanted to do a bit more than just cutting out. Maybe there's not much more you can do with them! BTW how northern are you? I'm in West Yorkshire.

You can take them to be recycled in Post Office.
I was thinking to cut the pretty parts of the cards out & let kids do sticking with them to make cards for next year... but probably won't look very nice, so probably will just recycle them!

Cut out the pictures and make a scrapbook?

kmg1 · 02/01/2004 10:08

Cut them into (large) triangles, then stick them onto large Christmas-tree shaped cards - mosaic-style.

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:09

The scrapbook sounds like a good idea and you can't beat a bit of glue to get in a mess with! If he gets cheesed off with that, I can then take the rest to the Post Office

KMG - I like that idea. I'd never think of anything like that. Hope I've got enough cards now!

Auntymabel - I'm in North Yorkshire, Harrogate. Where abouts are you?

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:15

Northerner - between Bradford and Halifax.

Oooh not far then! We could have a meetup just the 2 of us. I don't think there are many other Yorkshire Mumsnetters. How old is your ds - mine is 20 months.

Janstar · 02/01/2004 10:20

My aunt makes huge baubles out of them. I'm not sure what the shape is - dodecahedron (12-faces) possibly. The pieces are triangular I think, cut so that they have little tabs on each of the three sides. She uses the tabs to stick it all together. She makes bin-bags full of these things, everyone gives her their old cards, and they are all sold for charity. Can anyone enlighten me as to the exact specifications of these structures as I know I am being vague - sorry!

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:26

Northerner - my ds is 27 months. I'm fairly new here so not sure who else is about locally. Yes, we could meet up - somewhere half wayish. Is Otley half way or there abouts? It's about 40 mins from me.

OP posts:
Northerner · 02/01/2004 10:28

Otley is about 40 mins from me too but I don't drive. (another resolution is to pass my test this year!)

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:29

Janstar - I remember those now! We used to make them in Maths when I was about 12. They were great to make but I can't remember how many sides on each piece. Can you imagine trying to do that with a 2 year old! I might wait till he's gone to bed and do one myself. I can hear you all saying "how sad is that?" and I know it is but I have to get amusement from somewhere. Maybe I should just get a life

OP posts:
auntymabel · 02/01/2004 10:36

That's not a problem - I don't know Harrogate very well but I'm sure I could find my way around and I don't mind the drive.

We should definatley meet up then, but how about when the weather is a bit better so kids can run around and stuff? You can fill me in on your personal details first (I'm such a nosy cow!)

I'll start. I'm 27, married with 1 ds. Work 3 days a week as an account manager for an events management company. Originally from Redcar but lived in Harrogate for 8 years. 5'4'', long browny/dark blonde hair. That's about it! Your turn now.

popsycal · 02/01/2004 10:53

our LEA is having a recycling thing
the kids bring them into school in the first week back and they all get sent off to be recycled......
crafty stuff is probably myuch more fun - gift tags for next year?

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 11:09

Northerner - I'm 35, one ds. Not married at the moment but live with my dp. Was married a few years ago but that's another story! Work three days a week for the council. Always lived around this area although did a bit of travelling around when I was younger. I'm 5'5" (ish) with dark shoulder length hair, blue eyes, size 12 (before Xmas anyway ) and weigh about 10½ stone. I hope no one recognises me now! Yes, I'm happy to wait until the welly weather has gone. Are there some nice parks etc near you?

Bust my buffers! The phone just rang! I hope it's not a sign of things to come.

I've just had a client call also!

We have the Valley Gardens near us. Huge park and lots of nice grass to run around on, there is also an outddor paddling pool (weather permitting) and a boating lake.

auntymabel · 02/01/2004 11:28

That sounds good Northerner. We like paddling pools, preferably if they're not frozen. OK, when the weather pick ups shall we arrange something? Maybe we'll even find some more people nearby by then.

Definatley.

kmg1 · 02/01/2004 17:58

I love Harrogate. I have visions of falling in a little stream in the valley gardens, and having a scary close encounter with a goldfish! A complete stranger rescued me ... goodness knows where my parents were, I think I was probably only 3 or 4

stupidgirl · 02/01/2004 19:03

I know you're not talking Xmas cards anymore, but fwiw, my mum used to cut them up (maybe in half,or thirds) and use them to make little puzzles with, if that's any help.
