At the risk of really **ing people off this morning, I want to do more exercise this year. DOn't need to diet (sorry folks.....genetics.....)
Before DS, I was a member of a gym, danced from being tiny so was always quite fit, rann sports clubs at school, went to aerobics etc etc etc (sorry - I can feel the filty looks already)
I just feel 'bleurgh' now though and haven't done exercise properly for nearly 2 years (oh my god!!) and this isn't normal for me.
So if I haven't annoyed you enough for you to stop reading, can you suggest what I could do....
I work full0time and am knackered on an evening...don't have much time to myself....and fancy something a bit different
and oh, i HATE swimming....

I am definitely not an expert but i think it's quite similar to yoga lots of stretching and toning. I've heard really good things about it, I'm going to try and find a class.

hana · 01/01/2004 11:43

I did pilates for several months and never quite 'got it'. Never felt like I had done any exercise! Probably was doing it all wrong.....but I love yoga, must find another class.
What about cycling? or running?

popsycal · 01/01/2004 14:50

cycling - no bike
running - it hurts my knees too much!!!
pilates or yoga maybe.....
thanks folks!

Do you like dancing? Near where I live they have classes, like once a week, salsa it is (time is not good as is Sunday 3pm, but maybe near you it could be different?) and they have line dancing at our hall?

lavender1 · 01/01/2004 16:15

sorry, posycal realised you wanted a change from dancing, always found it easier if I went with someone to a class, as if I didn't feel like going I'd be letting them down, so sort of had to go...this was areobics about 10 years ago...If you do like Pilates/ yoga and things wonder if your friends go to this stuff and whether you could make a night of it just once a week, with nice treat afterwards..you know drink in the bar and a chat.

motherinferior · 01/01/2004 16:22

I do pilates and love it, but it isn't aerobically demanding. The old 'walk to work' trick is effective (I have to pick up my kids on foot every day, meaning a brisk 45 mins or so over a hill, and even though I currently can't do anything much else as I've still got SPD it has made a huge difference), if and only if you just factor it into the day's timetable - or could you invest in a bike?...however, it may also be worth trying the evening even though you're knackered. I used to swim in the evening - and my current pilates is in the evening - and although this goes against ALL inclination to stuff myself in front of the telly, you can actually get quite into it. So you could do, say, an aerobics (or even aqua-aerobics)class.

Other things you could explore if you do manage say one evening a week: indoor rock climbing/fencing/dry-slope ski-ing...

Gardening is surprisingly strenuous, apparently. If you like gardening, which I don't.

Another option I've had suggested to me when I've written about this is 'walking meetings' - actually getting out to the park or suchlike to brainstorm with a colleague. I've never tried it (work from home on my own) but it always sounds rather fun, and apparently frees up ideas quite well.

Now feel should put some of this into practice my sluggish self!

Browbeaten · 01/01/2004 17:25

If you would like to cycle but don't won't to invest in a bike or risk being run down you can do RPM or Spinning classes which are on stationary bikes. You would probably have to join a gym though. These classes last about 45 minutes are are pretty intensive. I do these and yoga twice a week and then pig out on chocs so defeat the point really.

popsycal · 01/01/2004 17:55

thanks again folks for all your ideas!!
I did aquanatal classes when pregnant and loved these....might look into aqua aerobics and yoga - never really fancied yoga though my sis is really into it..

motherinferior - we should make an exercise pact!!!

Good idea. I only got into exercise in adulthood but became quite a swimming addict (sorry). I do like deep water aerobics as well. Just wish my sodding SPD would clear up enough for me to go swimming again - especially since I can now drive so have no excuse not to go out on a cold wet night (plus added incentive of LEAVING my two little darlings to their father's tender care). Oddly enough my corner of Sarfeast Lunnon appears not to feature the sort of stirling activities I've suggested. Ahem.

popsycal · 01/01/2004 19:38

oooh found a pilates class on thurs 7:$5=8:45 about a 5 minute drive from me....no excuse really have i!>?

The main thing is to find something that you like doing. I started power walking about 5 years ago, now jogging, I?m 40 and hadn?t done any exercise for about 5 years! The benefits have been huge, I?m less depressed, my PMS is loads better, I?ve lost weight. I find it better as I'm not tied to a class and can just go whenever I've half an hour to spare plus its freeIt is much easier if you?ve got an incentive. Why not enter your local Race for Life look here I walked the first one and it took me an hour but this year ran all the way in under 30 mins. You don?t have to worry about it being a ?race? as you can walk , jog or run and its just women so the atmosphere is brill. Plus its a really good cause. Just make sure you wear decent trainers to protect your knees!!

Crunchie · 02/01/2004 14:29

I like bodypump - which is areobics with free weights, or Swiss ball exercises - using one of those big gym ball properly. This is mainly stretching and toning, but it really works those tummy muscles.

Twink · 02/01/2004 16:37

Ha ! Another person trying to persuade Mumsnetters to do Race For Life (and no Luckymum isn't me with a name change, I don't know her and I haven't bribed her to mention RFL !)

Luckymum · 02/01/2004 17:36

Twink.......I'm addicted to RFL it'll be my fifth this year. Last year I jogged round with a lady who was a breast cancer survivor (in her early thirties) we finished together and had a good weep when we crossed the line!

Twink · 02/01/2004 18:32

Maybe if we gang up we can twist some arms !

I've only done 2 so far, and cried at the end of both but it got me hooked on running and fundraising for Cancer Reaearch UK. I agree with you that the atmosphere is great and no-one cares how fast or otherwise you are. My mum is going to do her first this year with my dd (who is desperate to be like mummy, odd child) so I can still run it.

Running is a really convienient form of exercise for me but I find it helps to arrange to go with a friend so we don't make too many excuses...

motherinferior · 02/01/2004 19:02

I want I want I WANT to get back in the water. Have a GP appointment to check out my wonky pelvis on Tuesday. Sooooo ironic that after being Missis Slob for years I got to the point where I swam a mile several times a week, dammit, and now I can't

stupidgirl · 03/01/2004 22:04

I have been cycling, and doing a bit of jogging. I want to take up running (but need to invest in a decent sports bra and pair of running shoes first!). I am quite tempted to get an exercise video, in the interests of doing a variety of different things. This is just so not my thing, and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

Quite like the idea of one which does a dance routine or something, but would be interested in any recommendations. Thanks

stupidgirl · 04/01/2004 21:07

Oh, someone must have some idea
