It's all so earnest though, isn't it? Wink

'Just for fun I looked up the nutrients in these foods....' Huh???!

Caligula · 26/03/2006 23:51

But Bubble, you could take your argument and transfer it to vegetarianism 30 years ago - "until there is an easy accessible alternative to iron than meat, these veggies should keep schtum".

Often, a vocal minority will prompt change in supermarket buying practices. And once things are in the supermarket, mass-buyers will buy them and they become normal everyday items instead of wierdo purchases.

SM - you must be my soulmate Shock

Have drastically cut down on wheat too!! And am still amazingly alive.

spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:55

gibberish I cut dairy and wheat our altogether when a naturoapth suggested my ds might be allergic to it. My lifelong astham and exczema disappeard, as did his symptoms. I also got slimmer without having to do anything and I had a more stable appetite.

spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:56

S'cuse spelling. Blush

gibberish · 26/03/2006 23:56

My lifelong psoriasis has cleared up completely... am an advocate. (or an avocada?? those are so so good for you...)

True Caligula, but isn't iron found in more foods than calcium and therefore easier to source?

Caligula · 27/03/2006 00:00

Dunno Bubble - could be. But 20 years ago, kidney beans were for wierdies, unless they were in chilie con carne (and I think maybe only wierdies ate that anyway as well). IMO it's the same with calcium- just making people aware of where else you can get it is a step forward.

Blimey, you lost weight without doing anything else? I'm tempted but love carbs. Could never do Atkins on that basis. (and on the basis that I think it's rubbish as well)

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 00:02

Is soya milk a good source of calcium? That is accessible.

spidermama · 27/03/2006 00:04

Yes caligula. Sadly I'm a fat old bag again. We've had to go back on the wheat because ds needs to be on wheat for three months in order to be tested for coeliac disease. It's been nearly three months and I've put on about a stone. Shock

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 00:06

Cynical ol' me just feels suspicious when I hear the 'pus in milk' stuff. Vegans often oppose the 'exploitation' of animals for by-products. I do not agree with this view.

bubble99 · 27/03/2006 00:06

But each to their own, of course.

Caligula · 27/03/2006 00:07

But when you say you cut out wheat, did you just use other stuff like rice, gluten free pasta etc., or did you actually cut calorie intake?

spidermama · 27/03/2006 00:09

Just the wheat caligula. It changed the emphasis of what I wanted to eat and what satisfied me. I felt as if I was eating MORE food, but it was better. It took about three weeks to get used to but I felt brilliant.
I feel groggy and bloated again on the wheat. I can't wait 'til April 12th when he can have his test and we can cut it out again.

turniphead · 27/03/2006 00:15

caligula - keep your gnashers to yourself please Grin

Caligula · 27/03/2006 00:20
