What should we be eating and drinking instead to give us a balanced diet?

Im quite ignorant on this topic.....

But you may need to invest in a pair of \link{http://www.under-tec.com/index.php\these} to counteract the effects.

bubble99 · 26/03/2006 23:31

Badly treated cows and intensively produced milk, I can believe.

gibberish · 26/03/2006 23:31

Have to agree with you spidermama. I have discovered that many foods have as much, or more, calcium as milk and I do think that drinking cow's milk can't do us too much good as it was primarilly intended for COWS not for us. (And I am NOT a cow, despite what many may say)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:31

PMSL!

What are collards, agar and WTF are lambsquarters?

I am wearing those pants at this very moment, Spidermama.

Nothing at all funny about it, in case anyone else is laughing.

spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:32

Yes bubble, so was I. It was the final nail in my milk tolerating coffin. It was Moondog who told us. It's something to do with the cows being forced to produce way more than they need, getting engorged (you know the feeling Wink) and getting mastitis, which is an infection, which leads to the body making pus - Oh God I can't go on. (Heave! Gag!)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:33

Sorry, but i keep giggling at your "badly treated cows" comment Bubble.

Not sure whats wrong with me this evening.....Blush

My dh may well get me a pair for our anniversary BAA. Do you recommend them?
(wafts away a cloud.)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:33

BUT!!!! Isnt mastitis a swelling rather than an infection?

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:34

Lovely initials those, BAA! PMSL!

OP posts:
spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:35

An infectious swelling. I'm no doctor. (Can you tell?) I may have to find moondog's archived thread for back up now.

bubble99 · 26/03/2006 23:36

where's the accessible alternative to dairy, though?

bubble99 · 26/03/2006 23:37

And don't give me any collard nonsense.

spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:38

Is there nothing acceptable to you on that very extensive list bubble? All those nuts, beasn, pulses, leafys and rhubarb?

gibberish · 26/03/2006 23:39

Who knows. Soya? My girls are all older (youngest 5) and they all hate milk with a vengeance. But are all incredibly healthy managing without it however.

bubble99 · 26/03/2006 23:40

Because I think this is the danger...until there is a form of calcium that is as cheap and easy to get hold of as dairy products, the anti-milk posse should keep schtum.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:40

what is collard though? and lambsquarters - sounds appealing to me, but im a strict carnivore.....Blush

Grin

I WOULD, in all seriousness, like to cut out cows milk totally from DD's diet for a number of reasons.

OP posts:
gibberish · 26/03/2006 23:40

But yes, they do eat loads of pulses etc. so I'm quite sure they are getting all the calcium they need (I hope...)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:42

Well maybe the increased requirement for other calcium rich foods as an alternative to cows milk may drive the cost down perhaps?

OP posts:
bubble99 · 26/03/2006 23:43

It's the ease of dairy products which needs to be matched, though, IMO. I'm a fan of green/pulsey/veggie things but many people aren't.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:44

Did you know that most women in China barely know they have gone through the menopause except for the fact that their periods stop?

All due to the vast amount of soya in their diets.

There must be SOMETHING in this non dairy/more veg diet.

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/03/2006 23:45

I should have added an alledgedly in that statement somewhere.......

OP posts:
spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:45

I wonder how many times I'll have to post \link{http://www.interlog.com/%20john13/recipes/calcium.htm\this} link before someone reads it?

This is begining to appear like willful ignorance. Wink

gibberish · 26/03/2006 23:47

Looked at it SM before. Am a previous convert Smile

spidermama · 26/03/2006 23:47

I think we all eat loads of dairy (and wheat come to that) because we're used to it. It takes a little while to change these habits because we have grown up with them. Luckily it's not that unusual these days and we have lots of alternatives.
