Would you copy a story tape from the library?

Ds and dd love listening to story tapes at bedtime. The have a favourite which we get from the library - we keep it for months before returning it, and then take it out again soon afterwards.

It just occurred to me today that I could copy the tape, and then we wouldn't have to keep borrowing it. But I sort of feel I shouldn't do this...even though the tape is free to borrow from the library so it isn't as if it would be taking money away from them.

What do you think?

It is illegal because of copyright laws.

Could you not just try and find a copy in the shops or on e-bay instead maybe?

I don't know about others, but I would do a copy. Its not as if you would be selling copies or making any profit. It also gives others the chance to borrow it from the library.

would defo do it - not even give it a 2nd thought. I knoe copyright and stuff but if there was no way I would ever buy it then no one is losing out.

In reality, theres not too much diff btwn this and copying a book (legally allowed 10% for personal use). Im a boring bonkers tweed wearing librarian and I would copy...go girl, be a rebel.............

Oh definitely - not going to harm anyone is it ? Copyright etc is surely just to stop people pirating and profitting. When I was a student we used to copy tapes all the time - go on do it !

Someone i know, scans their kids's school photos and then sends them back saying don't want them. I was really shocked even though it doesn't really do anyone any harm, it would just never have occurred to me! So, in comparison, i think this seems quite harmless. Smile

I did used to tape songs off the radio, and copy friends' tapes.

I think I have qualms about this as it is the library

Why? presumably you paid to borrow it, its only likle buying a dress wearing it to a wedding and taking it back..........Grin

We do this. Cds and DVDs. We have a hard disk just for ripping DVDs onto (from a DVD postal thingy).

There's no excuse, is there?

If its a public library, they are probably just glad to get the thing back. You will be slightly diminishing their borrowing figurs....and therefore personally responsible for its closure in a year or so........only joking. If you are using the library and boosting their figures, you are doing your bit......

If dd had a favourite that she kept wanting to borrow I'd buy it for her rather than tape it - it would just seem more "right" to me somehow.

I would have done this as a teenager. Now I would buy it. So a no from me!

We have got loads, all from charity shops, where they cost about a £1 or less. Well worth a look :)

I don't think it is defrauding the library, it is the performers and writers that you are cheating. I do do it myself but feel it is not a good thing, and have sometimes ended up buying a 'real' copy afterwards when I have particularly enjoyed and felt grateful for the music or story.

Just found the tape on amazon for £17. Also found the book on ebay for 99p!

Still not sure what I will do, as i don't want to spend that much money...

We could always borrow the tape from the library and keep it indefinately - we use a mobile library and the man is so nice. If you forget to bring something back, he just renews it Grin

We did it so we could have stories on long journeys through France/Spain. I wouldn't want to take library copy in case got lost/damaged. It was only for our use, listened to a few times & replaced.

We used to get a new tape from the library at least once a month - only a small percentage copied - & no known copies exist at moment as they outgrow them.
