Just been to pick ds1 up from school(he's 6)only to be met by his teacher with ds's underpants in a plastic bag.
Apparently he had asked to go to the loo and her'policy' is to say no, and if they really want to go they will ask again! of course dh,couldn't hold on and wet himself! Is it just me or is this f outrageous!!!!!??????
To add insult to injury, as there were no school trousers for him to borrow while his dried,he had to wear his p.e shorts and everyone laughed at him.Sad
I am really upset and angry about this.Could she not have phoned me to go and pick him up or at least take him a pair of trousers in?
When push comes to shove, could she have not let him go to the toilet when he asked?

I'm a teacher (on mat leave now) and the children in our school are allowed to go when they ask but are encouraged to go at break times and when not on the carpet. You know which children are genuine and which ones are pulling a fast one. We always allow children who have a medical problem or a letter from home go without question. Think you should see the head but don't go in all guns blazing as that will backfire on you, be polite and insist (without getting upset) that your child, whilst trying hard to wait until an appropriate time, does need to go if he can't wait. Believe me the teacher will have been mortified and will probably be dreading seeing you tomorrow. I expect the school would ideally like the children to go at appropriate times but off course there are always exceptions and the teacher should be flexible.

Say this 'I am outraged by the complete neglegence of my childs human rights and demand an apology for this to myself and son infront of the class!' Also remind her that teaching a child to persist once told no is to your and her own detrement! bloody cow ! I hate her for you

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 16:50

Oops over zealous with the mouse!

Lio · 16/03/2006 16:51

!!!!!!! Dreadful

Miaou · 16/03/2006 16:51

be calm and firm

four points imo

when your son says he needs to go, he really means it

he has been brought up to respect/accept the decisions of his superiors (ie not to ask again when told no) - so why should he be expected to be rude enough to do so?

health reasons

humiliation

(sorry wriggly baby on lap)

kateandfelicity · 16/03/2006 16:57

Hi there, I really feel for your ds :( Angry
To the Headmistress:

  1. is it actually a policy of the school that they have to ask TWICE before being allowed to go.
  2. if it is school policy then ask clairication on what message that sends to children (ie. does it mean the teacher really means no? should you always keep asking questions until you get what you want etc etc)
  3. if it is just the policy of this teacher, then tell the headmistress that the teacher should not be allowed to practice such a stupid policy which is not authorised by the school.
  4. ask why going to the toilet is deemed to be so destructive to lessons? surely going to the loo for a wee is not going to take forever is it? 5)how this 'policy' corresponds with other school policy of things like: -not causing young children to feel humiliated or belittled and other social development stuff; -helping children to understand and respect instructions of teachers;
  5. when are you going to put an end to said stupid policy
  6. demand that the teacher make a personal apology to your ds.

thats what i would suggest

sorry 4 the ramble, but this really annoyed me!

hope it helps

kate

that's really sensible lockets.i just despair of her attitude . he has two teachers on a job share and i've got to say i think the other one is better- i wonder if she does the same thing though?

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:15

Thats a nice idea lockets, in our school the children put on a bead necklace and put a hand on my shoulder and I nod too. (The beads are so other members of staff know the children are going to the toilet and not wondering around the corridors aimlessly!)

RedZuleika · 16/03/2006 17:16

God, that's inhuman.

I had chronic UTIs as a child and my mother used to have to sweet-talk teachers and dinner ladies so that they wouldn't kick up a fuss - and would know that when I wanted to go, I should go. But that was nearly thirty years ago - and in any case, you shouldn't have to divulge your medical history in order to relieve yourself.

Isn't this used in 'interrogation' - because it has a dehumanising effect...?

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:17

Alexsmum - ask for a copy of the relevant policy which covers going to the toilet.

motherinferior · 16/03/2006 17:18

Yes (to Lockets), in DD1's class they just put their names on the loo sign/picture/wossname and go. Their lovely teacher said she felt it was part of their human rights to be able to nip off to the loo!

starlover · 16/03/2006 17:21

that's a great idea! i wet myself at school once because i had my hand up but my teacher was telling everyone what to do and i was going "miss brown miss brown" and she told me to wait and be quiet!

Nemo1977 · 16/03/2006 17:27

that is disgraceful am i would arrange vto dsee head to complain.

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:29

Alexsmum let us know what happens. Will be interested to see what attitude the school has. Have you any other concerns in the past about the school other than wetting/toilet? And does the teacher in question have children of her own? That makes a difference in attitude towards basic things like that.

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:31

When I was pregnant I was going to the loo far more times than the children during lessons - if I didn't go I would've wet myself! Really puts yourself in their shoes - poor little mites.

2ManyPimms · 16/03/2006 17:33

I'd have shouted the place down! What kind of idiotic policy is that?!!! These kids are 6, for pity sake, not 16!!!

Go see the Head!!!

GO GO GO GO!!!!!

i'm quite happy with the school apart from the toilet issue, which is a big thing i think.ds tends to habg on until the last minute anyway, so when he needs to go, he really needs to go!
am just so sad at thought of him being embarrassed and humiliated for no good reason!

OP posts:
jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:43

lockets mine too - she deserved a pay rise!

alexsmum · 16/03/2006 17:46

this is another thing that gets me-they are 6! what does she think they are going to be doing in the loo apart from peeing? having a fag?!

OP posts:
jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:55

You'd be surprised what some 6 years get up2 in the toilests - the stories i could tell!!!

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:58

Over last year we had the old favourite of wet toilet paper on the ceiling, flooding the floor by stuffing the plug holes with paper as well as the normal giggling and wasteing time. And this is just an average infant school!!! I love my job!!

jmum6 · 16/03/2006 17:59

Not that I'm suggesting for 1 minute that your son would do any of those!!
