Does your child have a TV in their room?

DD (9.5) thinks I'm very unreasonable because I won't let her have a TV in her bedroom. She has a PC, so is able to watch DVDs, but no telly. What's the situation in your house?

DD (4) has a TV in her room...But no aerial!
She can watch videos up there, but would rather be with us at the moment (ahhhhh)

I wasn't allowed a TV in my room when I was young. I had to wait until I turned 16!

rickman · 11/03/2006 22:04

Oh well, I've already dropped myself in it on the Casualty thread, yes my kids do have a tv in their bedrooms. They normally watch videos though, not the actual telly.

HappyMumof2 · 11/03/2006 22:05

ds is 6.8 and has one. His dad bought it for him, I didn't!
He actually doesn't watch it that much as he shares a room with dd and so watches TV in the front room when she is asleep.
He does have his playstation on it though, which I am really pleased about as it doesn't have to be in my front room or bedroom!

ThePrisoner · 11/03/2006 22:07

My dds didn't have TVs in their rooms until they were teenagers (we are evil parents). If your dd can watch DVDs on her computer, then at least you can police what she watches.

I know lots of children who have had TVs/video in their rooms from pre-schoolage. I'm all for using a TV as an occasional "babysitter" if necessary, but these children park themselves in their rooms for hours, and the parents have no idea what they are watching. Late night TV is not suitable!!

breadandroses · 11/03/2006 22:09

No.

Aero · 11/03/2006 22:09

No - not at all. I sometimes think it's be nice to have one in ds's room just so he can play his game cube up there (he doesn't play on it that much), or watch the odd DVD, but on the whole I'd rather he didn't, so will perservere with the game cube downstairs and he can watch a DVD in our room if he wants peace. Trouble is now that he's a bit bigger, he doesn't want to watch cbeebies like dd and ds2.

mykidsmum · 11/03/2006 22:10

No here too

mykidsmum · 11/03/2006 22:10

Even turned down a free one and video

goreousgirl · 11/03/2006 22:13

Yes - my dd is 6 and has had a tv in her room since 3 (comes from her waking at 5.30am and me needing her to be occupied before I came round) - However, she now sleeps through - and never has, and never will be a big tv watcher. Probably watches the one in her room once a month (if that) when she has a friend for a sleepover or something - other than that it gathers dust - same as the cd player in her room!!

DumbledoresGirl · 11/03/2006 22:17

My children never will. How horrid is that?

Detta · 11/03/2006 22:17

This is making me feel so much better. I was beginning to think I was out of step with humanity (as I often am). I really hate the thought of her watching stuff that I don't know about. (PC not connected to Internet BTW - last time she used my PC to look up homework I caught her just before she clicked the search button on Google, where she'd typed "young chicks". I dread to think what she might have seen!!!!)

No, but mine are 5 and 3 so younger than yours. I'm hoping to hold off on bedroom TVs until they're teenagers.

janeite · 11/03/2006 22:41

Mine are 11 and 8 and not allowed them. Do not have computer or video in their rooms either and can't see them being allowed until at least 14. Does that make me sound really mean?

brimfull · 11/03/2006 22:45

My dd was allowed one when she turned 14.

She watches neighbours on it and occassional dvds

lucy5 · 11/03/2006 22:47

No but shes only 5 and not that bothered really. Her time will come Grin

sparklymieow · 11/03/2006 22:47

My Ds and DD1 share a room, they have a tv but no aerial, just a DVD player but rarely used. DS plays his PS2 on it, means that he can play and we can be downstairs with the girls. I have a tv in my room, but never watch anything on it, its rigged up for the CCTV camera

Mazzystar · 11/03/2006 22:49

i was given my own tv ( black and white!!!) as a surprise 14th birthday present. i was half pleased and half insulted.

i'm hoping we will hold out at least as long

treacletart · 11/03/2006 22:57

no! no! no! never! never! never! - wont have one in our bedroom either.

(But guess might feel differently when I have to fight to watch my own choice of tv in the evenings when hes a teenager)

expatinscotland · 11/03/2006 23:00

no

GDG · 11/03/2006 23:09

No. Mine are only 5, 3 and 1 though. I'd like to keep a TV out of their room for as long as possible and they have their own playroom/lounge anyway with sky, video and DVD player. I think when they are teenagers they might like a TV in their room so they can have their own space and have their friends over separately.

Certainly not before the age of about 12 I'm thinking.

80sMum · 11/03/2006 23:12

Mine never had them. Terrible idea imo. Bad for children's development, not conducive to relaxation and sleep, and also very isolating. It's bad enough that TV can kill conversation, but at least we all sat and watched it together in the same room!

expatinscotland · 11/03/2006 23:14

I had to buy my own w/babysitting money and I was about 14 or 15 before I had one. Then my dad would take it away at 9PM b/c he thought it interfered w/my studies and w/sleep.

Friggin' ex-Army drill sargeant! Wink

When DD1 is ill, I move the one from our bedroom into her room so she can chill in bed w/it and some DVDs

alexsmum · 11/03/2006 23:22

no! and we don't either.
t.v should definitely be kept out of bedrooms imo.

MarsLady · 11/03/2006 23:25

nope!
