What gifts did you find most useful/like best that people gave you at the birth of your child?

SIL has given birth to a baby girl, she already has a boy.
We are going to visit them at the weekend I am trying to decide what gift to buy.
I already have a nice shawl with baby's details embroidered on but am stuck for something else. Clothes will probably be the next option.
What gifts did people buy you/or baby that you found most beneficial?
TIA

if its her first girl then something lovely from baby Gap is always good

  1. 'Miracle blanket' for swaddling
  2. Lamaze chime garden which was absolutely magic for stopping dd from crying

I know it's clicheed but I loved the Beatrix Potter cup and bowl set the my mums friend gave dd. Mind you I don't use it but still love it. The best present we got though was from one of my best mates mum who gave me a check for £100 and said I'm sure your dd has enough clothes, this is for you and dp to out for dinner, and we did! Probably inappropriate for your situation though.

SPARKLER1 · 10/03/2006 16:42

Carmenere - £100 Shock very generous of her. Smile

I second baby Gap. Clothes always go down well from there, plus they will give you a gift reciept so your sil can change if needs be.

We were given some of those little booties from Daisy Roots when dd was born and they were fab. We used them till she was about 6 months old.

Other than that what about making up a little box of things for your Sil rather than the baby if you have already bought a blanket.

My db bought dd1 a musical toy cow. It plays "you are my sunshine" when you wind it up. I put it in her cot and played it each time she went in for a nap. It is now being used for ds (having been used for dd2 as well) and is finally beginning to stop working! A really long-lasting present which I have always enjoyed.

(We even gave it a name BlushGrin)

Carmenere · 10/03/2006 16:50

Oh I've just thought of a great one, a fisher price wave machine cot toy thing, it's really fab, dd loved it and went to sleep listening to it most nights.
Yes it was very generous of her, she is loaded though and it was very welcome Grin

Mosschops30 · 10/03/2006 16:51

baby sleeping bag ...priceless

Carameli · 10/03/2006 17:26

I agree with the fisher price Aquarium wave machine that attaches to the side of the cot. My dd loved it so much.

My SiL also got dd a huge soft elephant toy. Its really so soft and cuddly. Perhaps not much use for a newborn immediately but dd is now 2.5 and Ellie is one of her fav toys to go to bed.

oh thought of another that was lovely, a Beatrix Potter rabbit, its a wind up one that plays a tune.

I came home from the hospital to find a fridge full of food thanks to my sister - chilled ready-to-eat stuff, fresh fruit juices, snacks etc. It was just wonderful not having to think about things.
How about making up a hamper with some baby things and just yummy items for SIL too? It's so hard to think about yourself when you've suddenly got 2 children.

foundintranslation · 10/03/2006 17:41

One of ds's godmothers sent a parcel containing the day's newspaper, a hand-made mobile, a book for me and a letter for ds for when he's older. That was really beautiful - made me cry.

helsi · 10/03/2006 17:45

This is really boring but I absolutley loved a wicker basket that my friend bought me that was crammed with baby lotion, cotton wool, baby shampoo, cotton buds, a dummy, a rolled up bath robe, baby scissors, sponge, nappy sacks, a couple of bibs, sudocreme etc. Really simple stuff but it lasted me so long and it was useful. A real change from the clothes etc that many other people bought (which were also really appreciated by the way).

She also gave me a smaller basket crammed with goodies for me such as toiletries etc and really big bar of my favoutite chocolate and a bottle of something special for dh.

Tommy · 10/03/2006 17:50

I liked the things we were given for later - a few clothes for older age group and even some spoons and little bowls and stuff. It was nice getting things out a few months down the line and remembering who bought what for us.

pol25 · 10/03/2006 22:38

Wine and chocolate!!! Grin
No probably my sis who brought me heaps of cotton wool, nappies, a cellular blanket to swaddle her and all those important and yet not so exciting baby things you need.

moondog · 10/03/2006 22:44

Oh yes,Daisy Roots shoes are wonderful!
She may already have one,but a friend gave me a little changing mat that folded up,and had a pocket inside for nappies and a little bow for some Wet Wipes.
Always had it in the car-made going out much easier.

TicTacsMum · 10/03/2006 22:44

A handmade wooden bowl with my dd's name on it from my sister. (Not made by her though!)

TicTacsMum · 10/03/2006 22:46

Oh, and a baby gym from an aunt and uncle who already have a granddaughter so have previous experience! Was amazed at how she took to it at only a couple of weeks!

Clary · 10/03/2006 22:49

bibs for DS2, all my old bibs were so gakky, so some nice ones I was given got loads of use.
Clothes for later on. Also how do the seasons match - if they are different (eg DD is spring, was ds autumn?) then the right clothes won't fit (ie snowsuit would be too small etc) so that might give you ideas. (I had 2 summer babes then ds2 was born in a cool spring and I had to frantically beg and borrow fleccy bits in tiny sizes as all I had was hot-weather vests and rompers!
A baby book or photo frames are always fab.
Also chocolate!

lucykate · 10/03/2006 22:50

piles cream Blush

Clary · 10/03/2006 22:51

sorry, that should read fleecy bits! They were all quite clean and not fleccy at all.

broken · 10/03/2006 23:03

This may sound selfish but my favorite gift was gift certificates for my favorite coffee (she knew I was a coffee addict). I had dh running to the shop and bringing me my coffee at the hospital using the certificates.

JonesTheSteam · 10/03/2006 23:05

DS had one of those fisher price aquarium things that you attach to the cot - fantastic!!!

Gave my nephew (sister's baby) one of those Taggie blankets - he loves it (and so does she!!!!)

JonesTheSteam · 10/03/2006 23:07

Also one of my friends sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers after I'd texted her to say I'd had the baby (she also sent the baby something a few days later).

The flowers were lovely - I know it sounds selfish but it was lovely for someone to think of me and not just the baby IYSWIM.

The best thing I received after the birth of DS1 was a survival pack.
It was a box containing essentials like nappies, wipes, breast pads, some salt for my bath to help my sore bitsBlush & a big bottle of bacardi!!!Grin
