a friend of mine says her niece is starting school in september.
she will be 4 THIS september.

shouldn't she actually start next september, when she is 5?

perhaps she is starting nursery. Some people say school when they actually mean nursery. If she turns four in September then she shouldn't be starting full time

starlover · 05/03/2006 20:58

yeah it could be nursery.. maybe nursery attached to the school?

If she is very early September and the school is low on reception numbers it is just possible that she is starting reception - I know three girls born last week of Aug/first week of Sept and their parents were given the choice of starting early or waiting till the correct year - the youngest (born about 2nd Sept) went in early and the other two (both end Aug) stayed down. That was in a private school though - not sure if state would do same ?

gosh.... imagine starting when you've just turned 4!!! scary

i can't remember when her birthday is now... maybe it is before start of term

I started full time nusery at 3.5.

if you think your child is ready for school you can apply for early entry and your child will be considered after they have looked at their development, cognative and emotional

my friend says that her mum wants her to start because she is more than ready for it (which tbh i think is probably true)

but yes, i do think it may be nursery attached to the school rather than actual reception.

Friend of mine's dd did this , but into Reception at a private school. She was almost 4 when term started and she has kept "ahead" with no issues. dd started at 4 year and 2weeks-ish last September(end August b'day) ! Could be that it is a nursery or transition class attached to a school.

starlover · 05/03/2006 21:25

yeah i guess it isn;'t so different to a very late august child starting that september... just wasn't sure if they actually did it or if they were going to be in for a bit of a surprise! lol

My ds and dd both started at the nursery attached to their prep school at least 18 month before they joined the Reception class.

Jensmum · 05/03/2006 21:28

My dd started nursery the september after she turned 3. She was 3 in the July so she would have been 3 and about 7 weeks.

It's attached to the local primary and the school and the local coucil class it as school. She get's homework and stuff.

harpsichordcarrier · 05/03/2006 21:31

my dd1 is due to start full time school the term she turns four, i.e. after Easter next year. so she would be three and 9/10 months.
I have no intention of sending her then, though. Way too young imho.
She can start in September, that is plenty early enough. Maybe even January...

The earlier they start, the earlier the school can claim funding ...

irresponsiblezebra · 05/03/2006 21:51

Cut-off date around here seems to be about 3 days into autumn term, bizarrely enough.

rummum · 05/03/2006 22:06
