naming babies after family members

What do you think about giving your ds/dd a name after a family member or friend? have you and why?

Both DSs have middle names from family members - DS1 after my father (died when I was small) and after DH's dad, DS2 after DH and my stepfather. Didn't see the point in giving them a middle name/s if they didn't mean anything.

turned out after we had dd1 and named her etc that we had given her my paternal grandmother's name as her middle name. ( although I knew her name as such - did not even think about it when I named dd1 - just loved the name.)

We named our son Thomas James after both of my grandads (I didn't know until a couple of years ago that one of the was called James as he always used his middle name of Wilf) My grandad Tom died 10 years ago and my other grandad died mid Feb when TJ was 4 months old.
