Think you should refuse if you wouldn't donate.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:06

so hunker - should I refuse to have a blood tranfusioin (or for my boys to have one) because I don't (and won't) donate blood???

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 16:07

Yes, for yourself.

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 16:08

But not if it's because you can't which I suspect is the case with you because of your travel to Zim.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:09

I may be able to donate, not entirely sure, but I've got an acute phobia of needles.

I wouldn't force a clostrophobic to get in a lift, in the same way I wouldn't force someone with a fear of needles to give blood.

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:09

q of q, ypou cant donate, its not because u wont!

OP posts:
misdee · 28/02/2006 16:10

if u have a phopbia of needles how are they gonna get blood into you?

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 16:11

Convo was about organ donation though - and are you really sure you want to get into blood donation again? The last thread upset you quite a lot iirc.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:13

I did actually call up and ask (god knows why - I freaked out once I got the stuff in the post Blush) , they weren't entirely certain. The travel to Zimbabwe doesn't actually stop me, but because I've been sexually active with a man from a country with a high HIV rate (and had two babies with him) even though he wasn't sexually active in that country they told me I'd have to go along and ask them (useful hey....).

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:14

misdee - presumably if I'm in a state where I'd need a blood tranfusion I probably wouldn't be in much of a state to notice the needles (or care for that matter).

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:15

peter has had many transfusion and is aware of them. they arent given when u are unconsciese. blood saves lives.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:17

misdee - I was vageuely aware of having the epidural when I was in labour with DS2 - but it was only when I'd actually had him the reality sunk in (and I freaked out again Blush). If I need any dentistry work done (thankfully not often) I have to be sedate first.

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:19

so what do u do if you need to have blood tests done?

OP posts:
wannaBe1974 · 28/02/2006 16:21

I think there is a vast difference between refusing to donate organs and refusing to donate blood. When you donate blood, you are aware of the process, you lie on a bed with a needle in your arm watching the blood run into the bag, it's perfectly understandable that some people may be uncomfortable with that, when you donate organs though you don't feel anything because, to be blunt, you're dead. The organs are of no use to you anyway so why refuse to give someone else the opportunity to survive even though you're already dead and the organs will just be buried/cremated anyway?

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 28/02/2006 16:21

I don't - I had one when I was pg with DS1, and didn't go for the ones with DS2 at all.

Touch wood I've not had any illness which has required a blood test.

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 16:23

Agree, WB, which is why I tried to get the subject back on track again.

So, organ non-donors...would you expect a donated organ if you needed one?

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:23

i actually havent given blood before. its on my to-do list, but i cant atm (i think) as i am still breastfeeding dd3 who just turned 1.

Misdee how is Peter now? I haven't spoken to you before but have read many of your posts - has he been home yet?

Spagblog · 28/02/2006 16:25

Registered!

wannaBe1974 · 28/02/2006 16:26

Hunker I would go so far as to say that if you opted out of a donation scheme that should be a total opt-out, if you opt not to donate then that would automatically mean you would be unable to receive a donated organ.

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:26

not yet, got a text earlier, he should (fingers crossed ) come home for a visit on the 9th.

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 16:26

Yep, I'd go along with that, WB.

dinosaur · 28/02/2006 16:27

I've just signed up as well. Although most people who know me in RL would wet themselves laughing at the idea of anyone wanting my liver Grin.

dinosaur · 28/02/2006 16:27

Even George Best would probably have sent it back.

misdee · 28/02/2006 16:28

thanks dino and anyone who has registered Smile
