Just had a hell of a Sunday, scared half to death

We had planned a nice weekend, a trip to the pool for a swim. Dh is away in the states. Dd had a sleep over on Friday night and had an alergic reaction to something. She was a bit spotty and under the weather on staerday.

Sunday morning she was covered in a horrid itchy rash, and then to my utter dismay, had a fit (she is 9 and wasn't showing signs of a temp) It scared the shit out of me. I asked a friebd to look after ds (5) and drove her to a and e

They admitted us, and we have just got back

The consultant feels everything is OK but has warned me that this could signal the start of epilepsy [sad} and worried

Why do these things only ever happen when dh is away

On no, poor you and poor DD. Hope she is feeling better now.

Fingers crossed it was a one off.

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 13/02/2006 13:18

Oh, MB, how scary! Really hope it was a one-off.

MamaG · 13/02/2006 13:18

Oh that's awful, you must have both been terrified

Frenchgirl · 13/02/2006 13:18

it must have been really scary for both of you

GDG · 13/02/2006 13:19

Oh mb Sounds absolutely terrifying. I hope everything turns out ok for your dd.

Blandmum · 13/02/2006 13:19

She is now, thank god, largly rash free. It went as quickly as it came....she looked as if she had been scalded head to foot when we were in the hospital. It was awful

O, you poor things - what afright.

If it helps, I had 2 conulsions as a child - one aged 4 (temp-related; I had croup), one aged 10 - out of the blue, no other symptoms at all. Followibng the 2nd one, I had an EEG to test for epilepsy. They found 'very slight' abnormality/poss epileptic tendencies. I have never had any recurrence and am now 33.

conVulsions

Blandmum · 13/02/2006 13:26

Thank you sassy, that is the sort of thing that I want to read!

They are not doing an EEG atm, but warned me to keep a close eye on her

Oh Poor you - how scary.

And yes - these things always happen when DHs are away - I think it's the law or something!

Hope it was a one off.

JonesTheSteam · 13/02/2006 13:40

Blimey. Scary Stuff. Was the sleep over at yours ? (Was wondering if there was a new trigger at the host's house IYSWIM) ? I presume the rash and subsequent fit are believed to be related, mb ?

Blandmum · 13/02/2006 14:34

When it happened , I just though, 'fuck what do I do?' I'm at least 200 miles from any family support. Thank god for very supportive mates. Ds had the time of his life in the 'sleepover' with his mates.

I sort of 'knew' it wasn't meningitis, as the rash blanched, but it was terrifying when she had the fit

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 13/02/2006 14:37

Shit! Maybe though, as you said, it was a reaction to something, kids can have fits as a one off, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's epilepsy does it? Is there any family history?

Sounds like a bloody awful Sunday to me! Sorry this happened to you.

Blandmum · 13/02/2006 14:37

Sleepover was at another house, so we are at a bit of a loss to identify the allergic trigger.

Doc seems to think that dd had a viral infection topped off by the allergic reaction and that was just too much for her system and that triggered the fit.

But they are not sure.

It wasn't an anaphylactic reaction

suzywong · 13/02/2006 14:39

oh poor you MB, poor dd, but if it is epilepsy it can be managed can't it.

Blandmum · 13/02/2006 14:39

Thankfully no family history

We were going to have a nice day swimming, with lunch out. And then 'Fuuuuuuccccckkkk what do I do now?'

Dh wanted to know if he should come home, but was worried that he might get stuck in the snow on the east coast of the US. I told him to wait it out, which I think was the right choice to make

Epilepy is very treatable...I used to work on developing anticonvulsants at one time.....funny how things come in handy when you least expect them....at least I knew what to do in case of a fir!

OP posts:
mummytosteven · 13/02/2006 14:42

oh dear all sounds very scary.

suzywong · 13/02/2006 14:45

in case of a fir, surely one should call the Forester

Greensleeves · 13/02/2006 15:38

Oh MB how terrifying for you! I hope it was a on-off and that she doesn't have any further problems.

How horrible and scary, mb. Glad dd is so much better and hope this is a one off. Poor you that it happened while dh was away.
