Did Anyone else see this last night.
I really couldn't warm to the daughter of the church goers. She had a really bad attitude and thought she was so superior to the other family.

I watched it - in total disbelief actually. You know what you are letting yourself in for when you agree to do these shows and I think both families were a bit out of order. I agree with you about the church goers dd, but the other family behaved terribly by leaving after 2 days to go to a nice hotel!!!! After seeing all those families and the way that they had to live, you would think they would have been prepared to make some sacrifices.

Someone neeeds to tell that Mum to stay out of the sun - how many lines did she have on her face???

hmb · 28/11/2003 09:36

I also watched it. They were so mis-matched, but not as much as the couple who went to the Carribean, stayed in am amazing beach front house, with chef, and then refused to eat to wonderful looking food. The mother of that family carefuly managed their budget so that they didn't eat luch, so that they could start drinking at breakfast! She also encouraged the other families 13 year old to drink!

I can't quite believe that they get people to go on these programs!

Lamin · 28/11/2003 09:50

I watched it too. I thought the daughter was awful, so self righteous it was unbelievable. I couldn't get over the grandma either, she looked like she was about 150 years old!

I just can't work out why on earth anyone would let themselves in for shows like that?

dsw · 28/11/2003 09:52

hmb - I also saw that one and found it hillarious, I wouldn't have been complaining about the beach house nice food etc....

Ps/ I am not really a serial Holiday Showdown Watcher!!!

charlize · 28/11/2003 10:22

God! Totally agree about the mothers face, That was scary nothing has ever convinced me more to slap on the sun screen.
What puzzles me is WHY on earth did the holy family agree to this show. I can see why the wrinkly family dai as they were obviously game for a laff. But the other family were far to serious and the daughter had no sense of humour at all. So why??
I couldn't help but feel they enjoyed being treated as royalty over in Africa . There are ways of helping charity without becoming a king and queen and being on national tv. IYKWIM

I also thought the churchy family went to Ghana to feed their egos aswell as help the children. The daughter was so up herself she really didn't come across as very christian like at all.
The wrinkly family should have grinned and beared it ,how pathetic.

Lamin · 28/11/2003 12:59

Agree that churchy family seemed to revel in all the glory a little too much, it made me feel slightly uneasy about their intentions. They were just far too worthy and "oh aren't we just so selfless" about the whole thing. BUT can't take away from the fact that they obviously made a huge difference to those villages.

And was it really christian not to let the wrinklies (LOL at that!) come to the "crowning"?

dsw · 28/11/2003 13:00

I have been trying to describe Wrinkly lady at work today - the only thing I can come up with is that she looked like the old women from "Terrahawks" - Can't think of her name though?

dsw · 28/11/2003 13:04

Her name was Zelda - just been really sad and had a look on the terrahawks website.

hmb · 28/11/2003 13:11

Yes, that face was quite something! Should cause a run on Factor 30+ sunscreen over the nest few days. I agree with many points made, but I can't quite understand why they couldn't cope with colsd showers for a week. And not eating the food that others had gone without to give to them was so rude. Regardless if likes an dislikes, unless it would cause an anaphalactic reaction they should have eaten the food, and considered themselves honoured. And yes, the other family were 'worthy' but then I don't do that for charity, so I should shut my mouth

elena2 · 28/11/2003 13:56

I was absolutely incensed with the attitudes of the wrinkly family mum, dad and gran especially towards the 'feast' that was put on for them.

'Oh, I can't eat that, it's just so dirty here' -

FOR F**KS SAKE, the whole village had prepared this food for you when the children have hardly anything to eat, why the hell are you being so rude, selfish and snobby???!!!

Watching the children eating with their fingers because they didn't even know what a fork or spoon was, and rarely even ate from a bowl was so humbling, and really made me realise how lucky we are. To think they couldn't even put up with it for a WEEK, fully knowing that week would end and they could go back to their little luxuries then, when those people had to live like that every day of their lives, made me bloody sick.

Even more so when they were at their hotel saying 'Ooh, look that's more like it - air conditioning, there's even a fridge fully stocked with drinks, ooh...'

And then, having the CHEEK to whinge about missing the ceremony! When they chose to leave the Church accomodation, which wasn't really that bad at all...

Bloody pathetic.

(Rant over )

CountessDracula · 28/11/2003 13:59

I only saw the second half - what did they do for the wrinkly family holiday?

charlize · 28/11/2003 14:01

Also Iam convinced that the wrinkly woman was wearing a wig. There is no way her hair would be like that at her age.
also agree that the angry daughter was actually not v christian at all.

OP posts:
Lamin · 28/11/2003 14:02

all inclusive resort in Cancun, bacardi and coke for breakfast and it went on from there!

charlize · 28/11/2003 14:03

CD for the wrinkly holiday they went to cancun in mexico.
churchy daughter had a face like a wet weekend in blackpool the whole time and only stayed at the nightclub for 20 mins because she heard bad language.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 28/11/2003 14:03

God how awful.

So who here would prefer Cancun and who would do Africa?

Lamin · 28/11/2003 14:05

I thought that too but I think she was probably only about 35 - just not been very "kind" to her skin!

If it was a wig wouldn't it have fallen off when she "slid" off her bar stool!

Lamin · 28/11/2003 14:08

Like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea for me but if I had to ... probably Africa, I don't like bad language

elena2 · 28/11/2003 14:10

Didn't see the first half, so can't comment on the church family in Cancun. That does sound a bit over the top, leaving the nightclub.
But still think wrinkly family's behaviour was inexcusable.
I'd go to Africa over Cancun any day, I know it wouldn't really be a 'holiday' as such, but the experience of making a little bit of difference to those children's lives would be far more rewarding.

Although I'd definitely have to go on a 'holiday' as well if I could afford it!

charlize · 28/11/2003 14:38

Lol Lamin Iam laughting my socks off at you saying wrinkly granny was only 35.
Are you joking she was at least 65 cause her daughter told u that she herself was 45.

OP posts:
misdee · 28/11/2003 14:45

i was taking the piss throughout the programme, i said the church family were boosting theor egos when i saw all the things names after them.

but ib reality, they have a done a hell of a lot for the people out there. i dont think this should've been done as a holiday showdown, as the other family had no real time to prepare themselves for anything out there. the son and his girlfriend looked like they enjoyed themselves and it bought it home to them about how bad things are. the christian daughter annoyed me with her self-rightous ways, i thought christians are meant to be understanding

fio2 · 28/11/2003 15:40

I watched the second half and thought the church family had actually done it for support of their missionary work and charity. Maybe to publicise the charity they work for. Regardless of how their daughter behaved - she was judgemental I agree. But I thought it was disgusting how the wrinkly family wouldnt eat the food the villagers had cooked for them - it was just so disrespectful and I was sitting there in disgust! And the wrinkly family were just so shallow for wanting to have a hot shower in aluxury hotel when the villagers wouldnt even have had the 'dirty' one as they called it- let only running water in their homes.

Queenie · 28/11/2003 16:43

The programme makers do edit for effect though as the church families son was not featured speaking at all! Having spent time working in Kenya I could understand where the wrinkly mum and gran were finding it hard to cope. It is a culture shock for anyone young or old but harder to cope with the older you get maybe? We are spoilt in our culture and take too much for granted. I think they were all humbled by the experience and a little ashamed at the end. I don't think you can visit somewhere like that and not be moved. I think as a holiday programme they should of let them stay in a basic hotel if they wanted and return to the village in the day - but that was the programme makers choice and by refusing this made 'good' tv.

fio2 · 28/11/2003 16:46

my dads aunt was head of the missionaries for the CofE, and my RE teacher was a missionary also - I know what they see. I cant imagine anyone being so selfish though. OK maybe I could

Queenie · 28/11/2003 16:51

Yes, they could have made an effort regarding the food after the sacrafices the villagers had made -that was appalling and hard to excuse (though the mum tried feebly by saying she did not like fish, etc which didn't sound convincing to me :0 ).
