Anyone else getting sick of these?

  1. You Must NOt speak the language of hwere you are going to Or really try and learn it

And it must be a disaster, not easy at all.
And you must not do any proper planning or research beforehand.
But it all turns out OK in the end.

Yes. Loved them to start with, not it's all a bit formulaic. The best one was the couple who bought an island in the South Pacific (?), got into a war with the locals about who owned the land, she had an 'affair' with one of the labourers, he became ill, they were kidnapped. You couldn't have made it up - and it was truly shocking. I felt sorry for the kids.

Yes, and they always seem to take on some farming thing where the income is £4k per annum for back breaking work and they need to do up a wreck to rent out but only have 50p in savings.

Halfwits most of them

I watched one years ago that was on brits in spain and a couple had lived there for 10 years - yes TEN years - and didn't know any spanish. She was quoted as saying 'it's bad when the kids were ill as no one spoke english in the hospital' or words to that effect.

She probably SHOUTED.....AND......SPOKE.....REALLY.....SLOWLY.....TO....THEM

I usually spend most of it shouting at the TV ( the same with property developing programme things...)but last nights "no going back" was an exception.
It was a relief to see 2 professional people running a professional business - although I would have learnt french before I left the UK!!

codswallop · 27/11/2003 13:53

Saw the one last night - follow up to a previous programme that we did not see - about couple of newly weds who decided to go into the competitive Ski Chalet business in Chamonix and agree with your thoughts so far. Would you really invest your entire future with such little preplanning, no proper training, no local knowledge or language skills etc. Were they really that naive (sp?)in the first series or are the producers just showing it that way?

Could not believe how difficult they apparently made it for themselves. There are huge supermarkets etc within an easy hour's drive where they could buy groceries in bulk. They had a whole summer season in which to learn easy to cook and freeze recipes to stock up before the guests came but ended up doing it on the job. I was amazed noone got food poisoning ! I think in that position I would have taken an intensive course in French which would have put them in a far stronger position to attract clients and liaise with other local businessmen.

In the end I felt that they made money in spite of themselves but I was frankly amazed they lasted the season. They'll probably do ok now, with additional publicity and all.

codswallop · 27/11/2003 14:09

Ok so he was getting really bad asthma attacks and was chronically depressed after the abduction and she wouldnt leave the island and then they made up their minds to and he died from a huge attack and she decided to bury him on the island (afer a long speech to his coprse int he open coffin)

And then In the end they agreed after a court case disputing ownsership of the island which they won) to live on the mainland sothe kids could go to school and visit the island.. cant remmebr about the holiday home ideas.

wonder what the kids Birth father thought about it...

Couldn't agree more LIZS - and was it just me or did she not really seem to do anything apart from waft about and make silly comments?

Nicaragua family story was amazing - what I couldn't get over was how normal and lovely the boys seemed to be - considering what a loony mother they had!

fio2 · 27/11/2003 14:12

I wonder what he thought aswell. She was a weird weird woman. Did they show his corpse? I mean its okay looking at a body in the chapel of rest but other people may not want to see it at the funeral! Sorry going off track again.

codswallop · 27/11/2003 14:12

fio2 · 27/11/2003 14:16

He seemed such a happy man before they went there I felt so sorry for him

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2003 14:16

Yes that pacific island one really took the biscuit.

The other main rule is:

take up a new occupation which you know nothing about and completely fail to prepare for it.

I really am sick of seeing families buying farms in France and Spain and then being shocked at how much like hard work it is/how little money they make.

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2003 14:17

meant to add: aren't they making a film about the pacific island family?
