I'd agree with you. My German is still not good 2 years on, but I am taking a course atm and I have 2 small kids, so I feel a bit of a hypocrite for slagging of the couple but they did have at least 4 months of "free" time which I felt they squandered. My rusty school French was better than theirs and I assume they would have had time to prepare beforehand. They did come across as rude and somewhat arrogant to just launch into English, although in Chamonix, as most large resorts, English would be widely spoken and IME that can breed complacency. However you are only going to get so far in a community if you made so little attempt.

Well I'm going to disagree with you about last nights programme - did any of you see the first one on last year? - that showed how hard the couple worked - she didn't just Waft around all day - she made all the beds, did all the cleaning every day - prepared cakes for afternoon tea - On the original programme there was a slight spat between them re division of duties -
I agree (from the comfort of the sofa) that they could have planned a bit better and they should definatly have learned french BUT compared to the families we usually see on these programmes they were a breath of fresh air!! professional and deserve to suceed.
There was one the other week who bought a tumble down farmhouse and a tumbedown barn who expected to renovate the farmhouse and make in to two dwellings, and fully renovate the barn all for £5k!!!, Oh and needed 20k to live on, one olive grove to provide about 6k the rest to come from holiday lets, oh and they couldn't speak the launguage...wake up to the real world...

ks, I'd agree but I think there is a general assumption that their English must be better than our French/German/Spanish etc which may well not necessarily be the case. I did feel it was rude to address a local official in English straight off, and that it would not count in their favour, but as it was being filmed the scenario was fairly artificial and, I assume, in English for the benefit of the tv audience too. Trouble is unless we try out our, sometimes basic, language skills we never build up the confidence to just get on with it. My worst time is on the phone as the person sometimes talks too fast for me to really understand quickly and I panic, then I realise afterwards that actually I could get the gist of it - much easier face to face.

sonnet, no I didn't see the original series so I don't know what research they had previously done but last night they did seem to make some fairly fundamental errors in planning.
