Top 100 films as voted for on the "poll of polls" this weekend on channel 4. Who do you think will be at number 1? On balance, I think ET will come out with the most votes overall. My favourite film though? It changes every week but this week the top 3 would be:

  1. La Dolce Vita
  2. The Man Who Wasn't There
  3. Breakfast at Tiffany's

I think I'll give Chocolat a miss then I can't bear it when they mess around with the story - why bother using the book if they're going to change it so much? On top of that I absolutely hate 'Allo 'Allo so I'd forever be looking for Rene! I watched about ten minutes of Circle of Friends and switched off because it wasn't how I imagined it to be. I love Maeve Binchey books (no concentration span for anything heavy anymore) but the film didn't have the same gossipy feel to it. Madmaz I love the sound of music as well - have to ask permission from dh as to whether I can sing to all the songs when its on (yes my singing is that bad!!)

Suedonim · 23/11/2001 19:35

'Allo, 'Allo, that's what it was called! I sat here for ages typing variations of 'Hello, Hello' 'Hallo, Hallo' 'Heloo, Heloo', and none of them seemed correct! Thanks Selja.

If you haven't seen Shawshank Redemption - well, what have you been DOING then?
Another great prison movie is The Green Mile, with Tom Hanks.
ANYTHING with Steve Buscemi (particularly Fargo, brilliant!) or Christopher Walken (yes, weirdo alert!)
Everyone LOVES Sound of Music, don't they ????

Winnie · 24/11/2001 10:36

Jodee, NO, No, no,... I hate the sound of music!!
Sorry...

My DH is proud to admit he has never seen the Sound of Music. I'm sure my DD's will trap him, one day, though, tee hee!

Jodee · 25/11/2001 09:38

Fair do's, Winnie, I have got strange taste I admit - but let's see your choices then !!!

Chanelno5 · 25/11/2001 09:53

No, Joe1, it makes you v.cool! (I'm only saying that because I've got it on video, and I love it!)

Helenmc · 25/11/2001 21:12

Madmaz - spot on. I also loved an English patient,
and anything with Harrison Ford in. I also like calamity jane, and 7 brides for 7 brothers. Aand Enemy of the State. and what abot the full monty

What's Fargo about?... just reliased part 2 is on NOW

Joe1 · 25/11/2001 21:37

How could I forget the Full Monty. Im going to have a top 100 instead of 3 the way everyone keeps reminding me of the films I have forgotten. I like Calamity Jane too.

Mollipops · 26/11/2001 07:58

Suedonym - clever name by the way - maybe your dd's will "von trapp" your dh! Lol...

My favourites would be: Shawshank Redemption, The Princess Bride, Singin' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, Big and any/all of Kevin Kline's movies! And I can't resist adding Shrek!!! I'm sure there are lots I've missed out...

Apparently the American Film Institute or something named "Citizen Kane" as the best American movie ever made. I've never actually seen it...anyone there who has?

Jodee · 26/11/2001 09:03

And the winner is ... Star Wars - WHAT a surprise. Reminded me of my feeble claim to fame - I went to school with the son of Darth Vader (Dave Prowse)!

Helenmc, you probably saw Fargo on part 2 but it is a very black comedy.

Suedonim · 26/11/2001 10:21

LOL, Mollipops re 'von trapp'! As for the nickname - I cribbed it from somewhere and have been waiting to use it for years.

Citizen Kane, yes, I've seen it, when I was small. No, I don't remember what it's like, apart from a large Orson Wells being the star! I think it's about a newspaper magnate, a fictional version of the Hearst publishing family in America.

Selja · 26/11/2001 13:29

There were so many movies I had forgotten I really enjoyed. Calamity Jane is one of my favourites and my fair lady (its that singing thing again). I had also forgotten how gorgeous and scrumptious Gabriel Byrne is. It was worth watching the programme to see him. I didn't agree with Star Wars being the best but then again I'm one of the few that had never seen it and then my dh made be watch the first three as he was horrified I hadn't seen them and I found it boring. Even worse he 'made' me go to the cinema to see the last one and I nearly fell asleep. Then again I didn't like Gladiator either and Enemy of the State but that was mainly the ending I didn't like it was as if the script writer had ran out of ideas of how to get Will Smith out of it. IMO!

Lisav · 26/11/2001 13:48

The Shining - first horror movie I saw that really scared me, who can forget the look on Jack Nicolson's face as he is peering through the hole he just hacked in the bathroom door?

The Others would also be up there. I went to see that last week and thought it would be rubbish because of it's 12 certificate, how wrong I was! I was scared to death!

Also Groundhog Day, Grease (but don't tell anyone), The Lost Boys, The Blues Brothers, all the Indiana Jones movies and that one about the Indian family from up North, was it East is East? Good movie anyway, really made me laugh!

Helenmc · 26/11/2001 21:33

Oh god how could I forget the Blues Brothers - my DH took me to a late night showing at the alternative cinema when we had just starting going out.... we had to sit in the stairs as it was FULL!
Don't all these films bring back memories of when and how old and what was happening in your life when you first saw them.

Bexi · 27/11/2001 06:42

My top three:

  1. Chasing Amy
  2. Stand By Me
  3. Sleepy Hollow
This list is by no means definitive though.

On Chocolat - I read the book before watching the film and wasn't disappointed. I preferred the kangaroo rather than the rabbit but Suedonim, I agree, it really bugged me in the film that the priest ended up being some sort of hero which quite obviously wasn't part of the book. Still, Johnny Depp has to be the sexiest man ever; charming, gorgeous, polite, funny - what more could you want?

Mollipops · 28/11/2001 02:49

I forgot - Family Man, Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels and Frequency.

But we know the winner now. Star Wars, sheesh. I was thinking about all the controversy about Harry Potter and witchcraft/occult etc. Funny how nobody batted an eyelid when Darth Vader was talking about "Come to the dark side, Luke"...

How about a worst movies list then?
