Top 100 films as voted for on the "poll of polls" this weekend on channel 4. Who do you think will be at number 1? On balance, I think ET will come out with the most votes overall. My favourite film though? It changes every week but this week the top 3 would be:

  1. La Dolce Vita
  2. The Man Who Wasn't There
  3. Breakfast at Tiffany's

Notting Hill has to be my No1 film as it really made a change in my life a couple of years ago, for the better I might add. My fav film is Untouchables, can watch this over and over at any time. Really hard for a third but anything from Disney would probably fit.

Tinker · 22/11/2001 14:51

Today it is:

  1. Life is Beautiful - (watched it yesterday)
  2. Jaws - ALWAYS watchable
  3. Schindler's List
Selja · 22/11/2001 14:55

I've always wanted to see Breakfast at Tiffany's but keep missing it when its on the box. My favourites are An Affair to Remember (absolutely love Cary Grant), Grease and Billy Elliott which made me laugh and cry. Then again ask me next week and it will probably have changed as I remember yet another brilliant movie I love.

Rhiannon · 22/11/2001 15:07

Apparently Star Wars (the original) comes out on top quite a lot as although it's not everyone's favourite, it does appear in a lot of top 10's.

I loved the film La Bamba, the life story of Richie Valens. Some wonderful songs, when he sings Oh Donna down the phone it's lovely.

Grease. I loved Moulin Rouge for it's pzazz.

Marina · 22/11/2001 15:37
  1. Life is Sweet
  2. The Manchurian Candidate
  3. Some like it hot

Mine change every week too!

Bugsy · 22/11/2001 15:45

These have been my all time favs for a while. Got them all on video and have watched all of them many times over. Sorry about Goldeneye - its pure lust!

  1. Some Like it Hot
  2. Its a Wonderful Life
  3. Goldeneye
Scummymummy · 22/11/2001 18:13

1.Some Like it Hot
2.Cinema Paradiso
3.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(Purely for the scene where gorgeous fit fab Paul Newman rides around sexily on his bike with "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" playing in the background. The rest of the film is nothing to write home about, but who cares?)

Zoe · 22/11/2001 19:13
  1. Some Like It Hot
  2. It's a Wonderful Life
  3. Evita

I am nearly you, Bugsy!

Evita is a fab film, even her Madgesty is good in it and Antonio Banderas...swoon!!

Chanelno5 · 22/11/2001 19:31

Wayne's World 2 - sorry to lower the tone, but it is funny!

Chanelno5 · 22/11/2001 19:32

Oh, and Meet the Parents was good too!

Chanelno5 · 22/11/2001 19:34

I loved Bridget Jones' Diary aswell, I think that is my current favourite. Oh no, I'm missing Eastenders, must dash..........

Selja · 22/11/2001 20:03

I've never heard of The Manchurian Candidate whose in that? Something About Mary is on this Christmas so I'm looking forward to watching that again then again I'm in Spain, is it BBC1 or ITV anyone know?

Robbie · 22/11/2001 20:39
  1. Il Postino
  2. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
  3. Fargo
Faith · 22/11/2001 20:44

Subway, Annie Hall, Mrs Brown, Priscilla,Queen of the Desert....I'll remember some more soon...note, nothing within the last five years...I've seen 5 films since the dd's arrived...102 Dalmatians, Dr Dolittle, Chocolat, Moulin Rouge & Captain Corelli's Mandolin...and so relished the adult time-out that I loved the last three indiscriminately, and would have done so however dreadful!

Lizzer · 22/11/2001 23:44

Shawshank Redemption and Indiana Jones and the temple of doom (had first crush on Harrison)Have to think of some more...

Suedonim · 23/11/2001 00:39

I'm sure 'Gone With The Wind' will be in the Top 100 somewhere, and 'Star Wars'.

Bossykate · 23/11/2001 05:33
  1. Apocalyse Now (original)
  2. Alien
  3. It's a Wonderful Life

Can't remember any of the numerous videos we have seen since pregnancy and the arrival of ds! Except Memento - amazing! First night out in months recently - went to see AI. What a stinker!

Joe1 · 23/11/2001 08:44

Paint your wagon, I forgot this one, for the 'I was born under a wondering star' bit.

Enid · 23/11/2001 09:59

Top 3 in no real order:

Deer Hunter
North by North West
Philedelphia Story

Marina · 23/11/2001 10:25

Selja, it's a thriller starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey and Angela Lansbury. I'm not a thriller sort of person as a rule but this is so clever and has such an interesting context (US Korean War veterans; McCarthyism; hypnosis) I watch it every time it's on.
Mind you, my brain must have been fried yesterday: it's not Life is Sweet but It's a Wonderful Life. A big hit with parents all round from the looks of things.

Stompy · 23/11/2001 10:39

Hmm tough one this...

  1. Wayne's World
  2. All of the 'Scream' films
  3. Starship Troopers
Selja · 23/11/2001 13:52

Ooh I love Shawshank Redemption its brilliant and it made me cry (always good if it makes me cry). Whats Chocolat like - I've read the book which I really enjoyed but have an aversion to watching films of books I've read as they never do them to what I imagined them to be.

Tinker · 23/11/2001 14:18

Selja - Chocolat was sumptious to watch, just how I imagined it from the book but, well, the stories not THAT great is it? Worth it for Johnny Depp though.

Madmaz · 23/11/2001 14:21

In alphabetical order (in case you think I am really sad)

Forest Gump
Groundhog days
Sound of music

though yes shawshank redemption. saw that on telly (for about the third time) not too long ago.

For sunday evening chill out - billy elliot pretty good new(ish film) recently on video?.

anyone seen Harry Potter yet? any views on suitability for children? Its PG. But very long. I'm thinking not for 5 yo. Are there any scary bits ? My feeling was not for young uns mainly because its too long - 2 and half hours apparently - rather than the content so might be a candidate for a video in a year or two?

Suedonim · 23/11/2001 15:40

My 5 yr old saw H Potter a couple of weeks ago and loved it. She sat through the whole thing, no toilet stops or anything, she was just mesmerised, according to DH (I didn't go - not an HP fan).

I don't think the film of 'Chocolat' was as good as the book, though J Depp was rather lovely! The film lost something by replacing the priest with the town mayor. The whole dispute really hinged on it being Lent etc and it somehow didn't work as well without the devout priest, imo. Plus, thingie-that-played-the-mayor reminded me of Rene in 'Hello, Hello'! Oh, and why did they change the rabbit to a kangaroo, in the film??
