Fears of new baby

I am due to have my first baby Jan 04 - I am not worried about the pain of labour, but of being handed my baby which has a strawberry birthmark on it's face.

sincy1 do you know this for a fact or is it just a fear you have?

tinyfeet · 25/11/2003 15:30

Sincy1, are you having sextets?

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:07

Just a fear - think have read far too many baby magazines!

dsw · 25/11/2003 16:10

I think you have read too many magazines aswell!! I can't give you any advice about your fear - but I am sure someone on this wonderful website will be able to help.

sykes · 25/11/2003 16:15

I think there's plenty of other things that are more appropriate to worry about. Sorry to be harsh but is this a really seroius worry or am I getting paranoid too?

M2T · 25/11/2003 16:16

Sykes - well said!

Sincy1 - I think you are winding us up!

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:19

Well I suppose if that's all I am worrying about I should be thankful!!

Doesn't every first time expectant mother have other weird worries??

LIZS · 25/11/2003 16:21

Both of mine had strawberry marks, in inconspicuous places, and these disappeared by the age of about 2 of their own accord.

Embarrassing to admit now, but I had a fear that mine would have webbed toes - it is a family trait, my mum and her cousin both have fully joined second and third toes, and I have 2 partially joined ones. However there are plenty of other conditions which can strike (a visit to the Special Needs threads can prove a humbling experience) and frankly my concerns were way, way out of perspective.

M2T · 25/11/2003 16:22

Sincy1 - Serious health problems YES! Not wondering if your baby will be asthetically pleasing. Really, does it matter? What if your baby has a strawberry birthmark.... or any other kind of facial blemish????

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:22

Do they always disapear?

OP posts:
codswallop · 25/11/2003 16:23

ME toooooooooooooooo! that wa my worry - other dsses were cleft palate and missing limb

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:25

Thank god someone else has/had fears!

OP posts:
M2T · 25/11/2003 16:27

Cleft palate and missing limb were concerns of mine too... not birthmarks! Seriously Coddy, did the thought bother you??

marsup · 25/11/2003 16:34

My fear is strangulation by umbilical chord on way out. This happened to my dp's cousin, otherwise a normal baby, and he is now grown up but in a wheelchair (not sure what the technical term is, but it seems to have had an effect on growth and motor-neural capacity).

What is the difference between being worried about strawberry birthmarks on the face and cleft palates - it is still about your baby being "athetically pleasing". I don't think you be too harsh on sincy1 as this is a genuine fear. Of course when the baby arrives she will love it regardless, but as we already have children we know that. This is a new experience for her.

Bozza · 25/11/2003 16:36

Actually though strawberry marks can cause a problem if they are large and close to the eyes for instance or if they bleed. I know a little about this because DS was falsely diagnosed as having one and so researched a little.

Sorry hope that hasn't upset you more sincy1 because its very unlikely. DS actually doesn't have a birthmark at all but I know lots of kids with strawberry marks that haven't caused any problems. DS's misdiagnosed condition led to him having an operation on his face two days before his first birthday.

dsw · 25/11/2003 16:36

That should have said. I don't think you should be too harsh...

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:38

Thank you Harman - being 34 weeks preggers was beginning to feel a little bit emotional!

I know that as long as my baby is healty and breathing then that's all that matters really! (I hope)

OP posts:
Bozza · 25/11/2003 16:38

dsw I see your point but I think there is a difference. The strawberry mark will in all probability disappear on its own within the first few years whereas the cleft palate is likely to require operations, may have an effect on breast feeding etc so its not just aesthetics in this case.

sincy1 · 25/11/2003 16:39

Still there as ever dsw....backing me, thanks!

OP posts:
dsw · 25/11/2003 16:41

Bozza - probably used wrong wording on that, but both items could be serious and require surgery. I just thought the comments were getting a bit harsh. Of course there are loads of things to worry about, so why can't strawberry birthmarks be one of them?

M2T · 25/11/2003 16:43

To be honest I was jumping on the "oh magod it's a troll" band wagon! Shame on me.

I just think that its an odd thing to concentrate on as your fear, thats all. And Cleft palates are nowt to do with asthetics!

Sincy1 - I can assure you that when you see your baby is healthy NOTHING else will matter.

dsw · 25/11/2003 16:47

Okay. Cleft Palates are nothing to do with Asthetics.

How is your son now Bozza - did the operation cause him to have scarring - how do they manage to misdiagnose that sort of thing?

Helsbels · 25/11/2003 16:48

Please don't let fear ruin what should be the best day of your life!! When you are handed that baby you will not believe how you feel no matter what it looks like!! Some babies are really ugly and covered in vernix and bits of yuk and blood, they smell really foul too - but they're yours and you love them. If your child has any problems you WILL deal with them but after the most exhilirating and exciting few (hopefully very few ) hours ever. Good luck and try to relax or you could cause more problems for yourself with sleepless night etc.
