Do you mean if the sitting room caught fire and you were upstairs in bed?

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:25

yes

starlover · 01/02/2006 20:25

i don't have an upstairs.
i would hope to god the front door wasn't blocked... because that's our only way out!

MarsOnLife · 01/02/2006 20:25

If we were downstairs there are 3 exits. If we are upstairs someone would have to jump out the window onto the bike shed and unlock the ladder and put it up against the wall. Then we would hop over fence to neighbours house and cry.... cos this is a lovely house.

Lonelymum · 01/02/2006 20:26

Luckily 2 of my children's rooms (in which sleep 3 of my 4 children) have flat roofs outside their windows. Would that be good enough do you think?

Please don't frighten me like this! Dh is away, the kids are upstairs in bed, and I am not sure where the window lock keys are. I wish dh didn't place so much emphasis on security, but a bit more on safety.

chicagomum · 01/02/2006 20:26

We have one of those special chain type ladders stored under our bed.

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:28

we would wrap DS in a duvet and throw him out of the window

we would jump out of window

TURN ON BBC1 NOW

we have a step ladder on the landing that we could put out of the window

but it would take too long

WestCountryLass · 01/02/2006 20:28

Where do you get one of those ladders from and how much are they? And also, how do you secure them to use them?

TIA

bangersandmash · 01/02/2006 20:29

if my living room were on fire we would have to either stay up stairs and hope we got rescued intime or hope we could still get down the stairs.

dp got a phone upstairs so we could call if we needed to.

there is nothing i can do... we are in a flat... we would die if we jumped out of a window.

so our only escape route is the front door.

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:30

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:31

get a smoke alarm

and if you have extention leads unplug them or unwind them

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 01/02/2006 20:32

Would I fit round the loo bend I wonder?

chicagomum · 01/02/2006 20:33

this is the knid of thing I mean safety ladders .

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:33

LM flat roofs would be fine I am sure

phone DH to ask where keys are put them on a hook next to the window or put them in a drawer

OP posts:
WestCountryLass · 01/02/2006 20:34

What is it with extension leads?

Rhubarb · 01/02/2006 20:35

They might trip you up!

Lonelymum · 01/02/2006 20:35

RTKM, there are separate keys for each window believe it or not. I keep asking him to drill some holes for hooks by every window, but he never gets round to it. Iwould rather have unlocked windows and be burgled than die in a house fire. (or worse, see my kids die).

Whizzz · 01/02/2006 20:36

Don't forget where you put window locks too.

Do your children know what the smoke alarm sounds like?

Would they know what to do?

bubblerock · 01/02/2006 20:37

We'd be okay, fire regs make sure of that, it's amazing that we are made to have fire extinguishers on each floor, lit fire escapes, emergency lighting, alarm and fire doors to protect our guests but in a regular house you don't even have to have a smoke detector!

We are so vigilant with ours that I wouldn't be worried at all, it's the safest house I've ever lived in and it's not even for the sake of my children - it's for strangers!

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:37

if the wire is not unwound it can get hot and start a fire

so they said on this prog on BBC1 now
