I keep my mobile by my bed these days as digital cordless phones do not work without power and that usully blows pretty quickly in a fire.

LM find the keys for their room and put them on a shelf in there

Thats right - also if you have the reels of extension wire for outside - you should always unwind before use.

Lonelymum · 01/02/2006 20:41

I do RTKM but they "move".

You are so freaking me out tonight though (and I am not even watching the TV) that I will gather together the bedroom keys and put them in my room tonight.

RTKangaMummy · 01/02/2006 20:43

sorry LM

I will shut up now

Unplug TV etc before you go to bed and you will be fine

this was started by an extention plug cord thoingy that hadn't been unplugged

I am sorry

No, it is good rally. Just not for me tonight as I am on my own and jumpy enough. I will unplug the extension lead though.

I was advised by a fire safety officer that you do not have to unplug sockets but you should switch off as many as possible - ie)kettle, toaster, microwave before you go to bed. The kitchen is usually the biggest risk area. Close kitchen door at night. keep a torch up stairs as well as a mobile.
I would put the kids inside a duvet cover and lower them out of the window.

We have all the keys on sticky hooks by each window/door.
The ad scares me with the kids hiding in the wardrobe.

We are on 3 floors so it would be harder. We have no obvious exit points on any floor other than the ground - where we have 3 exits. On the 1st floor, we could go out the living room window, ionto the roof of the porch and then jump I guess. From the 2nd floor, we'd have to hope we could get down a floor, even if on hands and knees with wet clothes. We do close all ground and 1st floor doors at night though, and have the ground floor exit door keys in a handy location.

My ds had the fire lecture thing at school a couple of days ago, so we did the complete fire plan thing. He knows all sorts of things now:

  • Under the smoke, then you won't choke (stay low)
  • Get the door felt so you won't melt (use the back of your hand)
  • Close the door for 20mins more (every door you go through)
  • On the way out, give everyone a shout (don't search, and stay out)
  • Don't return or you will burn Then we tested the smoke alarm, and did our fire plan. However as we live on the ground floor, it's not much of a worry, but it was useful to check all the plugs etc. We have this regularly at work, and it isn't very difficult to do at home (I test if things are hot). I've left the reminder sheet on the kids wall, so if anything happened ds could check what to do.

Why only 2 minutes though?
