I have found out today that my sister who is 23 weeks pregnant, has been told that the baby has a cyst on its kidney (which could be a marker down's syndrome) and it may mean that the kidneys won't function outside of the womb. If this is the case she will have to consider a termination. She had a miscarriage last year, and has been trying for this baby for soo long, my heart is just breaking for her and BIL.

Can't really say anything other than whilst it may be bad, it may be fine too... Were they given any hint as to which way it was likely to go?

spacecadet · 29/01/2006 19:40

how awful for her, but it could just be a harmless cyst.
i found out i have a severe kidney abnormality after living with it for 21 years! as no scans when my dm was preg, it doesnt always mean the worst.

ScummyMummy · 29/01/2006 19:41

I'm so sorry to hear this, chicagomum. Your poor sister and bil. Will medical staff able to give them further advice as to the baby's viability outside the womb?

i can understand your sisters heartnreak as i lost a baby at 23 weeks in october, but im guessing they will do more tests?
also there seem to be lots of cases where something untoward was picked up on a scan which turned out to be nothing.

So sorry to hear of this worry for you and your sister's family. My own SIL miscarried, then had to terminate an ectopic pregnancy. However she gave birth to my gorgeous niece in 2004

I found it quite hard to support her during her troubles as I felt guilty that we already had a healthy baby. My heart goes out to you all, hope there is some more positive news soon.

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 20:06

Thanks for those links oops. She is booked for an amnio tomorrow which will tell about the Down's syndrome, and also an appointment with a "specialist" (not sure what kind iyswim) to discuss about the kidney function etc. She is already 23 weeks so they aare going to have to make a fairly quick decision (I think the cut of point for a termination is 25 weeks?)

F&Z, I feel exactly the same as you did as I have 2 healthy children and both times fell pregnant without even trying.

After the miscarriage she was diagnosed with PCOS and was about to embark on hormone treatment etc when she discovered she was pregnant.

Sorry to hear this chicagomum, it must be a very worrying time for you all.
FWIW a very close friend of mine was told her son had a possible cyst on the brain at her scan and was given an option to terminate. He is now a very healthy 14 year old.
I hope it all works out ok.

WigWamBam · 29/01/2006 20:24

Must be a worrying time for them, and for you too. I hope everything works out for them.

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 20:27

The other thing that worries me is she has a 3/5 year old daughter who is very aware mummy has a baby in her tummy, it brings me to tears thinking that the may have to have a termination and then explain to her why she isn't getting a new brother or sister.

OP posts:
Kayleigh · 29/01/2006 20:29

oh chicagomum, that would be awful wouldn't it. I will be keeping everything crossed that it doesn't have to happen.

Just seen on another thread that the deadline is 24 weeks, so that only gives them 1 week if they have to have a termination.

OP posts:
tamum · 29/01/2006 20:52

chiagomum, it's no real comfort, but terminations can happen at any stage if there is a threat to the health of the mother or the baby. I am sorry she has this worry, I really am. Has she had any other tests before this scan that might give her any more idea?

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 20:56

No, no other tests other than the usual scans blood tests etc. It was picked up at her 20 week scan (done late because she was away on business and then off sick).

OP posts:
mszebra · 29/01/2006 20:56

Tamum is right, they only need 2 doctors to sign a late terminationn off as a severe disability or that child has problem such that it would not survive outside the womb.

Am really sorry to hear your sis is going thru this, chic'mum.

northender · 29/01/2006 21:11

Nothing to add really, how awful. Hope it all turns out OK.

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 21:52

Thanks for your knid words everyone. All we can do now really is wait and pry for good news. I'm also going away on holiday on the 10th for 2 weeks so won't be around to support her either if worst comes to worst.

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 21:53

I hope everything goes as well as it can tomorrow. The other posts say everthing really. Call me if you want to chat xxxx

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 22:02

HI QV may call you on Tuesday (at work tomorrow). It has come as a bolt from the blue, as it all seemed to be going swimmingly. But I guess no-one expects it to happen to them, its something that happens to some-one else is it?

OP posts:
mears · 29/01/2006 22:06

chicagomum - sorry to read about your sister's worrying time.

I jusy want to confirm that there is no upper limit regarding termination of pregnancy where there is fetal abnormality.

Here's hoping the amnio will be good news.
