I have found out today that my sister who is 23 weeks pregnant, has been told that the baby has a cyst on its kidney (which could be a marker down's syndrome) and it may mean that the kidneys won't function outside of the womb. If this is the case she will have to consider a termination. She had a miscarriage last year, and has been trying for this baby for soo long, my heart is just breaking for her and BIL.

UPDATE - Have just got off the phone with my mum. The initial results of the amnio (won't get the definitive results for 2 weeks) are 99% certain no chromosomal abnormalities. Kidneys are both enlarged and one has cysts. They are considering doing surgery in uetero to put a shunt into the worst kidney to prevent further damage and she will be monitored with regular scans and they may deliver early (so I guess it will be another c-section, her first child was breech). They aren't really sure how bad/good the kidneys are, they think one will pretty muchbe useless but hope the other will be good enough to compensate. TBH I don't think they will really know until after the baby is born. So its not as bleak as we first thought but she's not out of the woods yet.

It is good to hear this ChicagoMum, at least it's not as bad as it could have been. Hopefully all will go well. My thoughts are with you and your sister.

Well thats one bit of good news anyway CM. There is lots they can do now in utero so like you say, its not so bleak.

Fingers crossed for her and baby.

What about getting a second opinion? Try Dr Donald Gibb, 137 Harley St, London, Tel. 020 77250528

Say it is urgent! He is very good IMO.
